Default KCSR Travel Peeps Enter

Okay here is the quick rundown.

10 year anniversary for my wife and I...
Planning a trip for at least a week.

Travel date would be roughly August 26th - September 3rd. (can be 1 day before or after on either side).

Looking for something outside the generic norm. Not looking for anything inside the US, no generic Mexico, Caribbean, or Hawaii (already went to Hawaii).

She would prefer a cool beach setting, with waterfront or over water type bungalow (kind of like you see in Bora Bora advertisements).

Flying from Wichita, Ks. Not opposed to driving to KC or OKC or Tulsa if it saves enough $ to make it worth the drive.

Budget: not looking to break the bank but willing to spend $2-4k per person or slightly more if needed. (yes I know it can vary greatly based on places to stay and extra's added on to the trips).

My thoughts: Bora Bora, Maldives, Galapagos, Seychelles, Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands?

Thoughts? Experiences? Recommendations?

I'd say 2 - 4k per person you can do a LOT of things.

We have done the beaches of Hawaii and elsewhere. Our latest adventure took us to The Many Glacier Hotel in Montana. It isn't a beach, but is by far our most favorite destination and we have been world wide. It was like going back in time. I suggest the train ride as well as travels through Glacier National Park. Just my two cents.

Australia and New Zealand are just heading into spring that time of year, so unless you head to north Queensland it's probably not going to be great beach weather. The bad thing is the flight is probably too long for just a week out there (I usually do 3 minimum), but the exchange rate is pretty nice in either country right now.

South of France would probably be pretty nice that time of year.

Never been, but a bucket list place for me is Phuket Thailand. Not sure on travel prices.

$2k-$4k/person will have close to 1/2 your budget eaten up in flights to most of the places you listed unfortunately. I also wouldn't recommend changing more than 3 or 4 time zones if you plan to only go for one week.

Of the ones you listed Seychelles is super high on my list, but you'd probably spend $3k-$4k flying and decent accommodations aren't cheap once there. It's also a massive time change, so with the one week constraint I'd probably mark it off the list.

Why would the time change be such a big issue?

Flying from Wichita to Germany for instance is what 7-8 hours ahead? I have done that multiple times and had no issues.

Flying to Bora Bora is 4-5 hours behind time wise.

I understand the flight and losing a day on either side because of that alone, but Can't take more than about 10-12 days off in a row because of work.

Nothing inside the U.S. trying to get outside of it for a change.

It's probably not a huge deal for adults, I'm sort of used to traveling with young kids now. lol We really try not to hop too many zones on short trips because it takes 2-3 days to get their schedules flipped. That said, it's always been easier for us traveling east than west as far as time changes go. In our old age when we travel west 4-5 time zones we always end up in bed early and waking up at 4:00 AM for the first few days (which isn't necessarily a bad thing honestly).

Have you looked at Barbados or Turks and Cacos?

Puerto Rico could be pretty cool too on that kind of budget.

Go to Eastern Europe.
Not kidding.
Places like Croatia or Slovenia are beautiful, and very affordable.

I don't think you're going to find a vacation for under 8k for two people in a tropical area without hitting somewhere on this side of the earth. Flights to the Far East are going to wreck your budget, but maybe you could find something in South America? Brazil? Colombia maybe? Panama?

I think this is accurate. $8k likely not enough to have a weeks trip staying in a decent place in these farther off destinations. It may be enough for flights and hotel (maybe) but not food, drinks, rental cars, etc.

Seems like the Cook Islands might be an option similar to Bora Bora but slightly cheaper?

My wife and I have been planning a trip to New Zealand for a couple of years now. To do it the way we want to is going to cost us north of $10k. Just saying if you're wanting to do a waterfront bungalow type place, your best bet is a Caribbean island or South America if you're wanting to stay within the budget you've given.

I have been finding a lot of the resorts are showing breakfast and dinner included with the hotel for both of us. Sooo that would save a decent chunk of change.

orbitz has flights to Tahita from Wichita for $1900 a person. So $3,800 plus a ferry cost to get to Bora Bora. so within reason so far, before hotel.

Also I found if I can get to LAX I can fly from there to Tahita for only $1,270, so might be another option.

For reference, I just got back from 3 weeks (granted one week was staying with family) in Australia with additional domestic flights, 2 rental cars, locations on or near the beach when possible, not holding back on activities, for just a bit over US$10-11K in peak season for a family of 4. An $8K budget for 2 for a week or two pretty much puts you wherever you want to go, especially if you end up getting a deal on airfare (Slickdeals has been showing some great deals to Europe & Asia around September ~$400 return).

I think the main factor is travel time/time zone changes for a shorter trip. Anything else should be easy.
