There's been so much hype and mystery about this car for so long, that it will have to be something very special. I am betting that it will be.

The brief shot of the tach is really cool. Looking closely, it looks like all the gauges will be digital with a traditional look. Kind of like a video of the gauges. I like that idea if it is so.

The general thought on the Corvette forum is that the LT1 engine estimated at 450 hp is limited by the AFM feature...on the automatics. But the output on the manuals, thought to not have AFM, will be closer to the 480hp mark.

If all is true about how much lighter the car will be, along with better torgue throughout the entire rpm range, the base model will rival the current Z06 in every way. At an expected $50K starting price, that's significant. And for all the cloak and dagger, and I've heard that some people have even lost jobs for saying too much, (not sure if true) this one had better make the C6 look like a C4.

2014 CORVETTE

Five Things You Didn’t Know About The 2014 Corvette
Car And Driver

Thanks to some fine reporting by the incomparable Don Sherman, as well as some very reliable source material *cough* regarding the car's visuals, Car and Driver has assembled the fullest picture yet of next year's 2014 Corvette.

This unauthorized preview can be found in the January issue, and you'll get the official C7 story from C/D.com and Jalopnik after GM unveils the car at the Detroit Auto Show next month. In the meantime, though, here are some highlights of what Car and Driver knows so far.

  • The base car has aluminum rails:
  • Remember how, for the current-generation Z06 and ZR1, GM did an unprecedented thing and replaced the hydroformed-steel main spaceframe members with aluminum ones? Well, now even the base car's rails are alloy.

  • More carbon fiber:
  • GM has aggressive weight targets for this car, so the panels, bulkhead, and floor-of the base car-will be fashioned from composites.
  • Michelin won the tire war:
  • No more Goodyears as base fitment. Pilot Sports, y'all.
  • Manual, saved:
  • Porsche did the 7-speed-manual thing first, and ingeniously so, with one box for both self-shift and PDK applications. Here, the 7-speed stands alone, but needs only four gates rather than the Porsche's five to get the job done (don't forget reverse).
  • The Stingray comes later, with a V-8:
  • Although rumors had it bearing a twin-turbo V-6, the Stingray, the Corvette that jams econo, will be powered by a 400-hp 5.5-liter V-8, and should give 30-plus mpg on the highway.

Very interesting details there.

This could be a very nice vette. Doubt it will be in the P-car area like they are wanting. Unless they were aiming at the Boxter/Caymen area.

Regardless of what the car looks like, it definitely seems like Chevrolet is determined to make the C7 a much better car than the C6. That's what excites me about it's release.

Our Latest 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Renderings: The Anticipation Is Killing Us

We're just a few weeks away from the seventh-gen Vette's debut. Here's what you can expect.

What It Is: The seventh-generation Chevy Corvette—a.k.a. the C7—shown in our latest batch of exclusive renderings. These offer a slightly different take than do those that appear in our January issue, which is on newsstands now.
Why It Matters: Performance benchmark, affordable supercar, everyday track monster, sex symbol, halo, or proof that Chevy can build a world-beater—whatever your reason, the Corvette is everything GM can do well, done well. Full-size pickup trucks and family sedans pay the bills at General Motors; the Corvette is the pride and joy.
Platform: Like its predecessor, the C7 Corvette gets its own front-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform. (Sorry, fans of mid-engine designs; that plan is filed next to the California bullet train and abolition of the Electoral College under “For Utopian Discussion Only.” Or until at least the C8.) Like the outgoing Z06 and ZR1, the hydroformed main members of even the entry-level car are now aluminum. Carbon fiber is used liberally throughout the base Vett, and Michelin will supply all the rubber.
Anyone who has cursed the cheap, floppy seats and cheap, floppy switchgear in the current Corvette knows GM needed to make a quantum leap with the C7’s interior. We believe that’s possible, judging by the scuttlebutt within the company; if nothing else, the new car’s cabin will no longer be an embarrassment. We’ve seen Recaros—or Recaro-style chairs—in spy pics, and recent teasers from the company show a modern gauge display.

Powertrains: Chevy already has revealed the C7 Vette’s 450-plus-hp base V-8, an engine which we've detailed in all its glory. Now called the LT1, the 6.2-liter engine retains the previous iteration’s bore and stroke, but now adds direct injection. Yep, GM is marrying a pushrod eight with GDI; take that, technologists. Torque will top 450 lb-ft.
The Vette’s manual transmission now will feature seven forward gears, as does that in the latest Porsche 911. Although GM has been working on an eight-speed automatic transmission, work isn’t done yet, so a major supplier (Aisin) is producing an eight-speed ’box for the Corvette in the meantime.
Will there be variants later? Are bears Catholic? (We may have jumbled that one.) Bet on a new Z06, as well as a reprise of the astonishing ZR1.
Competition: BMW M3/M4, Dodge Viper, Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, Porsche Cayman S and 911.
Estimated Arrival and Price: The C7 Corvette’s debut is set for—where else?—the Detroit auto show on January 13, 2013, and sales will begin later in the year. You can expect a sticker price starting at around $55,000, although many dealers will no doubt try charging premiums for early stock. View Photo Gallery

I really hope that this isn't it. Because if it is, the price of C6's isn't going to drop far enough fast enough. Hell, the market price of the C6, C5, and maybe even the C4 might go up.

This is just one nasty looking vehicle, and I mean in a deformed Tiburon kinda way.

This design is easily the best since the C3 and I am sure many people will view it as the best ever. I really didn't think someone could dislike the C7's looks.

Seriously? Look at that thing...just slap a Nissan badge on it and call it a day. I don't know what that is, but it isn't a Corvette.

None of these are production photos. I'm sure the Vette will have very similiar styling cues as those shown, but I think you can be pretty assured the thing isn't going to look much like a GTR.

I like the design, it looks OK not mind blowing but OK. Why isn't anyone talking about the fact it only is going to have 14 more HP than a stock C6?

True but out of a smaller engine getting a little more mpg.

Actually the engine is still a 6.2 litre. The difference is direct injection with higher compression 11:1 I believe. This generates a much more significant torque curve. Add that the design of the car, yet to be revealed, comes in at an estimated 2900 lbs. While the early estimated HP ratings are only 14 more, the overall package may very well produce a base car that hold it's own against the current Z06.

I just hope it doesn't look like a Nissan in person.

Well if it can keep up with a Z06 than that's pretty impressive. Weighing in at 2900 lbs it gives close to the power to weight ratio of a Z06 but with less aggressive tires and suspension setup it seems a little hard to believe.

traditionally the new gen base car matches the previous gen z06 in performance, so I'm sure they used that as the bar.

As I understand it, it is getting the aluminum frame, many carbon fiber parts as well as Z06 spec brakes and suspension. Also Goodyear lost their deal on this one, Michelin Pilot Sports on the Corvettes.

While most of the specs on the car are still 'rumored' this is what's floating around on the Corvette Forum. (many unhappy campers about some of the renderings there)
