Well, here's the thing about the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

..

The current generation is a bit of a weak entrant into the sport-utility game. Its interior is blah, the off-road capability is questionable and its engines are the kind of thing that make anyone say "Meh*."

*Meh is a term that is essentially a synonym for "whatever," "blah," "sub-par," "a joke."

The last generation was something. Sold relatively well, did some good work and were good looking.

But enough the past and the present, what about the future?

This is where things get intriguing because it seems that most of the auto reviews are coming in positive. Not just positive, but very positive.

Will this be the car that brings Chrysler into the 21st century or is it merely a car that is simply too late to the "show?"

Several years ago, I paid heed to my inner child and attended Iron Maiden’s “Aces (Very) High Tour”. During one of the breaks, singer Bruce Dickinson said, “I don’t know what’s going on. We’re still making records, and I think they’re pretty good. But nobody on the radio wants to play them. They don’t play that kind of music now. Even if people want to hear it.” Intrigued by his comment, I bought the new Maiden record. He’s right. It’s pretty good, even if the music industry has moved on. It’s also a completely standard, formulaic effort that sounds exactly like every Iron Maiden record after their final burst of creativity, “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.”

What if… the new Iron Maiden record had been a double album, with the first disc being an absolutely perfect distillation of every previous record, and the second one being ten jazz standards, all performed to the highest standard of musicianship? Would anybody buy it, or would they still line up for the latest MP3s from the Silversun Pickups? That’s the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee in a nutshell. It’s staggeringly competent off-road, but it’s also an absurdly composed, quiet, and comfortable freeway cruiser. Are you interested, or would you rather have a GMC Acadia?...

Report: Chrysler to set up separate Fiat dealers

by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Jul 6th 2010 at 6:20PM
Fiat 500 – Click above for high-res image gallery

When Fiat and Chrysler merged, it was assumed that Fiat and Chrysler-branded products would be sharing a common showroom floor. Well, you know what happens when you assume. The Detroit Bureau reports that when Fiat-badged vehicles arrive Stateside at the end of the year they will be sold in an all-new showroom bereft of any manner of Chrysler product. The news reportedly comes from none other than Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, who adds that a total of 200 Fiat stores will come online in an undetermined time.

While Chrysler dealers are likely a bit upset that they won't have Fiat products to sell in their dealerships, they will reportedly get first dibs to claim one of the 200 stand-alone stores. And those dealerships must be equipped with both sales and service departments as well. The first Fiat to enter the Fiat-exclusive showroom will be the diminutive 500, which has been very well-received overseas. And more product is undoubtedly also on the way, as the 500 alone is not a big enough carrot to warrant buying a new dealership.

Opening 200 new dealerships will not be cheap, as a new full-service dealer can cost $1 million or more. There are also the costs associated with marketing a new brand in the U.S., which will likely cost well over $100 million. Since Fiat vehicles haven't been available here in States in a couple decades, the folks in Turin, Italy will likely have a lot of work to do to spread the word. Those who actually remember the Fiat brand in the U.S. market will likely need the most convincing, as horrible quality woes were a main factor in the brands failure.

An early post on the details of the 2011 Dodge Challenger at NADA Guides has revealed the pricing for the updated car, which gets a 6.4-liter HEMI in the SRT8 version as well as other SRT vehicles. Power on the bigger engine isn't stated, however, leaving us to guess at its ultimate output.
The new 6.4-liter HEMI is expected to generated anywhere from 480-500+ horsepower, depending on the application. Anywhere in that range is a significant bump in power, yet the price of the range-topping trim drops to $43,100 from the 2010's current $43,680.
Other models in the lineup see significant price rises, however, and it's not yet clear why. Additional features, a raised base spec, or simple production costs might explain it, but we'll have to wait for the official, full details to verify. Whatever the reason, the base model V-6 car now starts at $25,305, up from $23,695. The SE package car is dropped, but a new variant called the R/T Classic is added, priced the same as the standard 2011 R/T at $32,770, up from the 2010's $31,610.
For a preview of the 2011 Challenger's platform mate, the 2011 Charger, check out our spy shots.

Fiat's Marchionne wants to add CNG- and LPG-powered vehicles to Chrysler's lineup

by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Jul 7th, 2010 at 9:01AM
2011 Alfa Romeo Giulietta – Click above for high-res image gallery

Fiat has the highly regarded Multijet diesel engine among its offerings, and Volkswagen has been spending massive amounts of moolah to soften American hearts toward diesels. Yet in spite of those two factoids, at a recent symposium in Michigan Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne championed compressed natural gas (CNG) as a fuel he'd like to see take a notable place among the panoply of domestic options.

Last year when Fiat presented its five-year plan, the senior VP of powertrain, Paolo Ferrero, mentioned diesels, hybrids and electric cars as intentions beyond the direct-injected and turbocharged ICE. Earlier this year an electric Fiat 500 was announced for 2012. But the push has apparently already begun to integrate compressed and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles. Fiat's already has the experience and hardware in South America, where its tetrafuel engines run on four different fuels.

Marchionne didn't offer any kind of timetable for the arrival of CNG, saying only that it "is the most effective solution, in terms of costs and timing, to lessen this country's reliance on oil" as well as making it clear that it could be a quicker way for Chrysler to get seriously green. He did admit, though, that the infrastructure is nowhere close to making it viable. We will admit that the idea of an Alfa Giulietta that runs on LPG is an enticing thought. But we'd be even more enticed if Fiat could get even one Giulietta here for retail sale that runs on... well, anything.

Chrysler to drop HEMI badge from its marketing strategy

Posted: Jul 07, 2010

6.1L HEMI V8 in the Dodge Challenger SRT8

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Chrysler will soon be dropping the HEMI badge from its powerful V8 engines.
“As part of an effort to create a greener and more refined image, Chrysler and its new managers from Fiat SpA are demoting the Hemi, according to dealers who have been briefed by the company,” the WSJ reports.
Apparently, Chrysler will focus most of its advertising on the engine’s cylinder deactivation feature rather than the brute force that comes from the engine. A dealer who wished to remain anonymous said that only “Ram and Dodge owners” will still wear the HEMI badge.

Chrysler debuts limited-edition Mopar '10 Challenger

by Steven J. Ewing (RSS feed) on Jul 7th 2010 at 11:20AM
Mopar '10 Challenger – Click above for high-res image

The Mopar division of Chrysler has, in a way, been one of the automaker's silent heroes. This brand continues to build standard-spec and aftermarket parts for a range of Chrysler products, and while these optional goodies have always been offered in an a-la-carte fashion, Chrysler is now offering a true Mopar version of the 2010 Dodge Challenger.

Mopar starts with a Challenger R/T, fitted with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and adds a hood-venting system, cold-air intake, front strut brace, unique engine cover and a strut-tower brace. Chrysler hasn't released official numbers, but we'd say that these modifications are good for an additional 10 or 15 horsepower – nothing crazy.

Inside, there's a Katzkin leather seating package, special gear shifters for either transmission, a custom leather-wrapped steering wheel and – you guessed it – a serialized dash plaque. Only 500 of the Mopar '10 Challengers will be built, finished in a brilliant black clear coat with a choice of either red, blue or silver accents. (What, no white?) Other exterior changes include things like a black chrome grille surround, black wheels, functional hood vents and hood pins.

The Mopar '10 Challenger hits dealerships next month, priced from $38,000 with the automatic transmission (including the $750 destination charge). Want a do-it-yourself shifter? Add $1,000 to that price. (Wait, what?) For the full details, hit the jump for the press release.

Chrysler Group LLC to Introduce MoparŪ '10 Challenger

Company Continues to Leverage, Grow Mopar Brand

- Mopar '10 will be available in August
- Pricing starts at $38,000, which includes destination
- Five hundred special-edition cars to be built, customers may pre-order now

For the first time in its history, Chrysler Group LLC will launch a special-edition MoparŪ version of one of its vehicles. The Mopar '10, a Mopar 2010 Dodge Challenger, arrives in Dodge dealerships next month.

"Our Mopar '10 Challenger is a collaboration of two iconic brands with tremendous heritage," said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC. "Dodge put the heart into this Challenger and Mopar added the soul. The result is a unique, special-edition car that only we can offer."

The U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for Mopar '10 is $38,000 for an automatic transmission and $39,000 for a manual transmission. Both prices include $750 for destination. Customers may pre-order now.

"Mopar '10 has a wicked, sinister appearance that will turn heads." said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of Dodge, Chrysler Group LLC. "The Mopar brand resonates with hard-core enthusiasts, and this car will too."

Dodge and Mopar collaborated to create Mopar '10, a "Mopar modified" 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T. Under-the-hood features include the legendary 5.7-liter HEMIŪ V-8 engine, a hood-venting system, a cold-air intake, a front strut-tower brace with shock caps, and a unique engine cover. Under the decklid is a rear strut-tower brace that stiffens the chassis and improves handling characteristics of the car.

Mopar '10 will be available in Brilliant Black with a choice of three accent colors: Mopar Blue, Red or Silver. Accent colors will appear on side stripes as well as in the stitching on the steering wheel and seats. Exterior features include 20-inch forged heritage gloss-black wheels, black-chromed grille surround, and a functional, vented T/A-style hood with vintage hood pins. Mopar logos and graphics are prominent on the front fascia, hood, hood-pin caps, body-side stripes, windows and on the chromed fuel door. A special Mopar '10 car cover also comes with the vehicle.

Interior features include Katzkin leather seating, custom leather-wrapped steering wheel with baseball-style stitching, Mopar shift handles (T-handle for automatics, Pistol Grip for manuals), a serialized dash plaque with Mopar '10 logo and Mopar branding throughout.

Every customer who purchases a Mopar '10 will receive a special owner kit that includes a certificate with the vehicle identification number (VIN), date of build completion, and build number. The kit also includes a limited-edition sketch of the vehicle signed by Chrysler Group design chief Mark Trostle, a book that highlights the special vehicle build, and Mopar '10 merchandise.

Kamal-Back: Alfa Romeo reportedly cooking up two new crossovers

by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Jul 7th 2010 at 6:21PM
Alfa Romeo Kamal concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Alfa Romeo, in case you hadn't noticed, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. And it seems like rumors of an Alfa CUV have been floating around for just as long. But the wait may finally be over as the Italian automaker reportedly plans on making it up to its customers with not one, but two new crossover models.

With its sights set firmly on Audi's Q5 and upcoming Q3 compact crossovers, the two-pronged approach may help Alfa launch into the CUV market. The smaller of the two is tipped to be based on the new C-Evo platform developed for and recently launched on the Giulietta, while the larger model could borrow Jeep underpinnings, substantiating earlier reports. Expect the first to come along in a couple of years and the second to follow a couple of years after that, with North American sales a distinct possibility.

So the Charger is going up in price considerably. That could hurt sales. It's low starting price of just over $23 was one of it's strongest selling points.

Chargers, Magnums, and 300 V6's with so much rotating mass they become impractical.

Snap Judgment: Would You Drive a Two-Cylinder Car?

Snap Judgment: Would You Drive a Two-Cylinder Car?
C

In September, Fiat will install its new two-cylinder Twin Air engine in its compact 500 hatchback for European markets. The engine will allow the already diminutive car to achieve over 55 mpg on the U.S. cycle., but it's not confirmed whether or not the powerplant will make it to the States. But is there a market for a two-cylinder car in the United States?

Fiat's new engine, which took almost two years to develop, produces 65 naturally aspirated horsepower, and a turbocharged model will boast 115 horsepower. To reduce emissions even further, a mild hybrid version is also in the works -- although it's highly unlikely that either version is destined for North America.

We've seen plenty of two-cylinder cars over the course of automotive history (remember the Citroen 2CV, or even the original Fiat 500?), but few cars utilize the twin-cylinder setup today. Currently, the only other production car to feature a two-cylinder engine is the Tata Nano designed for emerging, and on a recent drive, we learned what bare-bones motoring is like.

Although the 500 will soon make the jump to North America, it's highly unlikely that the two cylinder -- albeit offering decent power and fuel economy -- will come stateside.

Today's Snap Judgment:

Would you buy a car with a two-cylinder engine?

2011 Fiat 500 Prima Edizione: a limited edition just for United States

Fiat announced a special edition of its 500 minicar in order to make its North American debut in Italian style. Dubbed Fiat Cinquecento ‘Prima Edizione’ (First Edition), the new collector-edition Fiat 500 models will be manufactured in a limited edition of just 500 units and will be sold just in the U.S.
According to the manufacturer, the new models will be exclusively available in three colors: Bianco (White), Rosso (Red) and Grigio (Gray) and will be equipped with a 1.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder engine mated to a manual transmission. Each of the 500 Prima Edizione vehicles will feature a sequential VIN and badge according to production order. “The Fiat Cinquecento Prima Edizione was developed especially with the Fiat fans in mind,” said Laura Soave, Head of Fiat North America, who personally presented the opportunity to the Fiat aficionados. “For over a quarter of a century, the members of this Club have kept the spirit of the Fiat and Lancia brands alive in North America through their unique and passionate support for true Italian design. We really value their loyalty, and the Prima Edizione is our gift of appreciation to these fans on behalf of Fiat North America.”

Fiat Working On Hybrid Twin-Cylinder Engine That Promises 80 MPG

Just this week Fiat revealed a tiny two-cylinder engine that its customers in Europe can pick for the funky 500 minicar, and which in naturally aspirated form delivers around 65 horsepower and promises a fuel economy upwards of 55 mpg.
While we know that there will be more powerful turbocharged applications of this engine, new reports suggest that there will even by a hybrid version good for up to 80 mpg.
According to the guys at AutoExpress, the likely set-up will be a mild hybrid system that pairs the new ‘TwinAir’ two-cylinder engine with a dual clutch gearbox housing an 8 horsepower electric motor. They claim that the engine will return CO2 emissions of only 70g/km, which roughly equates to the aforementioned 80 mpg fuel economy.
Being a mild hybrid, the electric motor would only assist the engine during high load and pulling away from a stand still. It would also be used to restart the engine, which would shut down during long stops such as at a traffic light to further save fuel.
No word on any releases date but it’s probably some years away from hitting European showrooms--and even further away from any U.S. launch.

Report: Fiat 500 Abarth Speedster in the works

by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Jul 19th 2010 at 5:58PM

We've been hearing about the supposed introduction of the Fiat 500 to American shores for so long that the car may grow stale before the first one touches soil on our side of the Atlantic. Chrysler and its parent company, Fiat, seem to have grown keen to that very possibility, so to stir the pot somewhat, the two have gotten together and released a few scant details about a performance version that's also headed our direction.

As we've already heard, the 500 Abarth will pack around 134 horsepower from a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 0-60 run of around 7.6 seconds. If you're thinking that those numbers aren't exactly devilish, fear not – the Abarth-tuned cars will also pack reworked suspensions to help them carve up tarmac like a turkey dinner.

That's cool and all, but the biggest news is that Fiat is actually mulling an Abarth Speedster – a unique new model that is rumored to borrow heavily from the 1959 Zagato Abarth 750. Expect a shorter roofline as well as a folding soft top if the car comes to fruition. No one knows exactly which engine Fiat would snug down into the little topless wonder, but rumor has it that a 163-horsepower version of the same 1.4-liter four-pot is a definite possibility. Sounds good to us.
