We also got a look at the Viper Red Mopar Ram Runner. It's inspired by Baja-style desert racing and according to official Mopar press information features 35x12.50-17 DOT-approved General Grabber tires; a prototype of a full suspension that Mopar will offer later this year; 6061 T6 billet aluminum upper A-arms with rebuildable, high-angle ball joints that permit 14 inches of wheel travel; 4130 chrome-moly steel lower control arms; high-angle CV joints that are combined with plunging, splined axles made of 300M tool steel and 1-inch-diameter high-angle tie rods; 3-inch-diameter internal bypass Fox shocks; and variable rate rear coil springs that support bed loads while special control arms provide 14 inches of wheel travel. Outside, it has fiberglass front fenders and fiberglass bedsides; a custom tubular Baja bumper and aluminum skidplate combination that houses four high-power LED off-road lights; and a custom tubular tire carrier for the spare. Inside, it has a trick six-point rollcage.

We got to see, and photograph, the Ram Runner in action and we can say that all of the mods worked very well together as a unit.

Report: Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan to launch next year?

With the new Giulietta now out in the open, Alfa Romeo's attention is turning to its big brother. Set to replace the 159 sometime next year, the highly-anticipated nuova Giulia promises to improve on the outgoing sedan's lackluster driving dynamics.

Based on Alfa's variable C/D platform, the Giulia is tipped to get a McPherson front suspension with a twin-link rear setup. As with the Alfa 159, the Giulia is expected to be front-drive, with the trick Q4 all-wheel-drive system available as an option, hooked up to a variety of turbodiesel and MultiAir gasoline engines.

Unlike the MiTo and Giulietta, both of which are hatchback-only, the Giulia promises both four-door sedan and five-door wagons as part of the mix. The tantalizing end of the range, however, is tipped to include an in-house GTA model – with at least 300 horsepower, all-wheel drive and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission – and a lightweight, front-drive version with 350 horsepower to be co-developed with famed Alfa tuner Autodelta.

We'll have to wait to see if the speculation proves accurate – and, for that matter, if the car will take its design cues from the 8C Competizione, the Bertone Pandion or the Pininfarina 2uettottanta. But in the meantime, you're invited to tinker around with the online configurator that Alfa just launched for the Giulietta hatchback, where you'll find you can order it in any color you want, as long as it's a shade of gray.

2011 Grand Cherokee arrives in July but… why is Jeep so quiet?

This July, the redesigned 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is set to arrive, making many ask why there hasn’t been much noise being made. At the New York Auto Show, the failure of Chrysler to showcase a production version was conspicuous.

But there are some who believe that like it has done in the past, Fiat will astound everyone with a car launch that will blow everyone away. It’s highly possible that Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has something in store to make up for the lack of fanfare. At the New York auto show, Jeep CEO Michael Manley revealed that there is something “unusual” being planned for the car’s introduction. Of course, Marchionne is known for his dislike of traditional marketing and advertising. For example, during Fiat’s launch of the retro 500 minicar in 2007, a countrywide extravaganza took place in Italy. The 500 was perched on top of a giant floating platform on the Po River in Turin, and was welcomed with dancers and singers. It can be recalled that at the time, Marchionne, who admires Apple CEO Steve Jobs, said the 500 would be “the iPod of cars.” It could very well be that he wants the Grand Cherokee to be known as the iPad of CUVs.

Marchionne says next European auto merger may involve a French carmaker

When asked which European companies would forge alliances next, Fiat S.p.A. CEO Sergio Marchionne answered that it would likely involve a French manufacturer.

In an interview with reporters in Rome, Marchionne said that PSA/Peugeot-Citroen has made an attempt to tie up with Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and while those talks have collapsed last month, he thinks that it will proceed to look for another company. PSA, which has an engine partnership with BMW AG, said that the two firms are considering further areas that they can collaborate with each other on, including development, production and procurement of components. Many carmakers have entered alliances by working together on designs and parts such as engines. Some of these tie-ups have even involved stake purchases. Last week, Daimler AG and the Renault-Nissan alliance disclosed that the partnership includes an exchange of a 3.1% stake in Stuttgart-based Daimler for holdings of the same size in Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. Last June, Fiat acquired 20% of Chrysler Group LLC. Marchionne said that the Daimler-Renault-Nissan partnership isn’t easy but that it’s a “step in the right direction.”

2011 Alfa Romeo Giulietta makes real world debut, no plans to come to U.S.

Remember the Alfa Romeo Giulietta we saw at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show? Well, that was just a preview and the 2011 Giulietta is actually making its world debut today with a bunch of details and high-res images.
The 2011 five-door Alfa Romeo Giulietta will go on sale in Europe starting next month and will be available in five different models including:
Two Quadrifoglio Verde versions fitted with the 235-hp 1750 TBi.
Two versions with 170-hp 2.0 JTDM.
and a version fitted with the 170-hp 1.4 MultiAir Turbo gasoline.
All engines are combined with a manual 6-speed gearbox belonging to the three axle transmission family, which can withstand and transmit high maximum torque values. The Multiair and 170-hp 2.0 JTDM units will also be available with a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Oh and if you’re wondering if the Giulietta will come to the United States when Alfa Romeo makes its return to the stateside – don’t keep your hopes up.
“There are no plans at present to export the Alfa Romeo Giulietta to the North American market,” Richard Gadeselli, vice president of communications for Fiat Group Automobiles SpA, told AutoWeek.

Report: Analyst claims Chrysler may not be able to survive in current form

When General Motors and Chrysler entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2009, it was very clear that one company had a future product portfolio and one didn't. So while The General received the lion's share of government funding, Chrysler was basically given to Fiat with the hope that Team Pentastar could benefit from platform and product sharing. The early results of the Chrysler/Fiat team have been somewhat encouraging. Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and his team have made significant progress cutting costs, and the management team created a five-year plan for Chrysler that includes new, Fiat-derived platforms and re-badged Lancias and Alfa Romeos.

Will these steps be enough for Chrysler to remain the full-line manufacturer it is today? A report in Automotive News shows that Bernstein Research analyst Max Warburton doesn't seem to think so. Warburton reportedly wrote in an assessment for Fiat investors that "we remain unconvinced Chrysler will survive in its current form despite Marchionne's blood, sweat and tears." Warburton cites four unnamed senior executives from Detroit.

The analyst's feelings come despite the fact that he feels Chrysler will come close to breaking even in the first quarter even with relatively poor sales. Warburton actually anticipates that Marchionne will announce Chrysler made a small profit in the month of March. So why the doom and gloom? Warburton cites Chrysler's still limited product development, light product portfolio and limited synergies between the two companies. The analyst also points to Marchionne's target for Chrysler to hit a 14 percent market share by 2014 as a reason for alarm. Chrysler hasn't been at 14 percent market share since 2000, and the Pentastar is currently just under 10 percent share.

In the report for Fiat investors, Warburton called a reasonable exit exit strategy from the situation "a slimming down of Chrysler to be just Ram, Jeep and a U.S. production base for Fiat." We're quite positive the folks in Auburn Hills, MI wouldn't like that plan. What do you think? Drop us a line or two in 'Comments.'

I think they're hinging hopes on the new 300C which is supposedly enough to 'make grown men cry.

Fiat to fill in the blanks for Chrysler

Chrysler's chances of ending its sales decline and returning to profitability should become clearer Wednesday, when Fiat is to lay out a five-year business plan.

The strategy for the Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia brands is expected to reveal new details about the vehicles Chrysler's North American factories will build. Also expected are details of Alfa's return to the U.S. market, plus future product lines for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and the new Ram commercial-vehicle brand.

Decisions that Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne are to announce Wednesday in Turin, Italy, may include:

• The Chrysler and Lancia model lines will become one global upscale brand.

• Chrysler production of several vehicles for the sporty Alfa Romeo brand.

• Chrysler's North American assembly plants will produce up to 400,000 vehicles a year for Fiat's European brands.

• Whether the Agnelli family, which controls Fiat and Chrysler, plans to spin off the company's auto operations in a stock sale.
Key is intergrating engineering, sales, production

Marchionne's plan to more than double Chrysler's annual sales from 1.3 million last year to 2.8 million by 2013 relies on integrating Fiat and Chrysler engineering, sales and production around the world.

"It's a truly symbiotic relationship," said Jim Hall, managing director of consultant 2953 Analytics in Birmingham. "Fiat is providing the seed for a lot of Chrysler Group vehicles, and a lot of Chrysler vehicles will help Fiat around the world."

As Chrysler and Fiat operations become intertwined inextricably, plans for the Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo brands will affect jobs from Chrysler's Auburn Hills headquarters to factories in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Ontario and Mexico, as well as dealerships across the country.

Chrysler is to announce financial results for the latter part of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010 in a separate statement Wednesday, but it is unclear how much detail the company will provide.

Chrysler's chances of earning a profit, repaying taxpayer loans and becoming a stable employer depend on the success of its engineering and production work with Fiat. Fiat owns 20% of Chrysler, but it controls the company through its agreement to provide technology for new vehicles Chrysler needs.

The presentation in Turin, Italy, where Fiat has its headquarters, will fill in some blanks left in Chrysler's November presentation of its strategy though 2014.

Key parts of Chrysler's strategy are dependent on plans for the Fiat, Alfa and Lancia brands.

Chrysler is to have worldwide responsibility for developing pickups, minivans, large crossovers, midsize and large cars for itself and Fiat. Fiat is to handle the engineering of compact, subcompact and smaller cars and crossovers.

From Chrysler's point of view, that probably means the following developments:

• Chrysler's Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant will produce a luxury car for Alfa Romeo alongside the next generation Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger.

• The design and engineering of Chrysler and Lancia vehicles will converge to form a single global premium brand. Chrysler will export midsize and larger cars -- including the next 300 and the replacement for the Sebring sedan and convertible -- for sale alongside Lancias in Europe and around the world.

• Midsize and larger Dodge vehicles will be sold as Fiats in Europe.

• Chrysler factories in North America will build 400,000 or more vehicles for sale by Fiat brands annually. Chrysler already plans to produce as many as 130,000 Fiat 500s in Toluca, Mexico.

• Fiat's European plants will build one or more small vehicles Chrysler will sell in North America. • A Chrysler plant not yet identified will produce a new Alfa Romeo sport sedan and sporty station wagon.

• A Chrysler plant will produce a crossover for Alfa Romeo, possibly on the same Fiat-based platform as the replacement for the current Jeep Liberty SUV.

• A Fiat plant just outside Turin will build a specialty model based on a Chrysler platform for sale by Chrysler and Fiat brands.

• Chrysler will export the new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee from its Jefferson Avenue assembly plant in Detroit to Europe. Foreign production of that and other new Jeeps will be key to the growth in China, Russia and possibly South America.

Report: Fiat Planning Four-Door 500 For U.S.

Many in the U.S. have been hoping to receive the wildly popular Fiat 500 minicar for the past couple of years but a lack of interest in small cars has largely held it back. Now, with Fiat's alliance with Chrysler in place the Italian auto giant has a gateway to the lucrative U.S. market and the first model to arrive under the new alliance will be the 500, though it’s launch is still more than six months away.
The 500 will be sold in Chrysler dealerships and it will be the only Fiat-badged model in the U.S. market, but it appears there will be several different variants, possibly up to four. The four models are likely to include the regular hatchback, the 500C convertible, a ‘Giardinetta' wagon, and the high-performance Abarth version.
While the hatchback and 500C are near-certainties for the U.S. market, a new report claims a four-door model is also headed our way, likely to be the Giardinetta wagon. This four-door model isn’t expected to be launched in Europe until the end of 2011 so any U.S. release won’t be until after that.
It is described as a compact minivan because of its hatchback rear opening and high roof design, and its footprint is both longer and wider than the regular 500 hatchback on which it’s based.
In addition to the four-door Fiat 500, a new compact sedan model may also be imported and sold under the Chrysler brand. More details should be revealed following the release of Fiat’s latest five-year plan on Wednesday the 21st.

2011 Dodge Charger caught testing... in Europe?

One good way to hide the next Dodge Charger from spy photographers is to keep it out of the usual venues. Perhaps that's why it's been spotted again testing in Europe wearing heavy camouflage. We've seen this car (and its interior) in roughly the same state of dress before, but not in Europe.

With Fiat's heavy stake in Chrysler, it's even a bit more logical to find a Dodge under development on The Continent. Head-scratching aside, what's in store? Nothing radical, it would appear. The biggest changes are likely to be to the grille and lamp clusters, with the former growing in size, and the latter getting an infusion of LEDs. The basic shape under all that black cloth is the familiar LX-car form. Bodyside surface detailing is hidden, though there are rumors of some cues being exhumed from the 1960s Chargers. We'll have to wait until the wraps come off before we confirm or deny the new retro themes.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will kick off Chrysler turnaround

While many automakers are turning to the compact vehicle segment to improve their brand image, Chrysler is taking a different approach.
To see how Fiat SpA is doing at its job of managing Auburn Hills automaker Chrysler, keep a look out for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Ready to go on sale in June, the Jeep Grand Cherokee will prove that Chrysler had made changes in repairing its poor quality and subpar fuel-economy image. Chrysler Group and Fiat SpA CEO Sergio Marchionne has repeatedly said that Chrysler won’t turn around until the new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee hits showrooms.
“It would be an understatement to say that the SUV segment isn’t a growth segment anymore. It has migrated to a more sensible, calmer personality, and that in itself is the real trouble for Jeep,” said Erich Merkle, president of the consulting company Autoconomy.com in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Nonetheless, Jeep brand CEO Mike Manley isn’t worried. He says that Jeep customers are among the most loyal and that Jeep sales rose 5 percent worldwide in the first quarter of 2010 while the company faced a 2 percent drop.

Marchionne lashes out at critics, calls them “fundamentally offensive”

During his presentation of Fiat Group’s 5-year business plan, Sergio Marchionne, who is also CEO of Chrysler Group LLC, lashed out at critics who say his companies are not addressing the flaws of their business. Marchionne called critics “fundamentally offensive,” “based on absolute hogwash” and “wholly unjustified.”
“I will not accept the criticism that does not recognize the work that has been done by Chrysler and this house,” he said.
Marchionne’s comments came after auto analyst Max Warburton, of Bernstein Research in London, said Chrysler may not survive in its current form even after posting an “astonishing” profit in March.
Marchionne acknowledged that there many skeptics may have “some level of doubt” about the ambitions of his plan, which promises to make both Fiat and Chrysler into solidly profitable within five years.
“We need to find a permanent fix to the way this business is run,” he said, adding that the alliance with Chrysler is key to that. “Without Chrysler, (Fiat’s) future would be completely different. I think we have to admit it would have been a marginal player for the rest of its life.”

The Jeep Liberty-based Dodge Nitro might not be a major sales success for Chrysler, but that’s not stopping the company’s new parent, Fiat, from considering a future for the midsize SUV in Europe.

Although Chrysler and Fiat have yet to confirm any plans for future Nitro exports – the vehicle has been sold in Europe as a Dodge – Automotive News says that the Nitro “will become a Fiat by the end of the year.”
It’s likely that Chrysler’s Toledo, Ohio, assembly plant would produce Fiat-badged Nitro-based vehicles for export. A thoroughly revised Nitro set to bow this fall as a 2011 model for North America has been included in Chrysler’s timetable for future products, although few rumors about changes have been made public.

Fiat’s recently released five-year plan has revealed the automaker’s tie-up with Chrysler will be farther reaching than first thought. The plan revealed the automakers’ future product roadmap, with several collaborations planned.

In 2012, Fiat will begin production of a new compact sedan for the Chrysler brand. The new sedan will be built in Italy, suggesting it could be priced at the premium end of the segment.
Starting in 2013, Fiat will begin building a mid-size sedan for Chrysler in Italy. The sedan will replace the current Chrysler Sebring. Although the product roadmap says the new sedan will be produced in Turin, Fiat went on to say the Sebring replacement “will be primarily produced and distributed for Chrysler in the U.S.”, indicating North American production is possible.
2012 will also mark Alfa Romeo’s U.S. return. The iconic Italian marque will re-launch in the U.S. market with a compact SUV based on the vehicle that will replace the Jeep Compass and Patriot. A larger SUV based on the next-generation Jeep Liberty is also planned for the Alfa brand, with a launch scheduled for 2014. Both models will be sold globally.
Alfa’s model expansion will continue in 2013 with a new rear-wheel drive roadster. The roadster model will either be built in Italy or Canada. Chrysler’s LX platform will likely serve as the basis for the roadster model. As shown by the 200C concept, the LX platform is flexible enough to accommodate a shorter wheelbase.
Beginning in 2013, Fiat could begin importing subcompact models for the Dodge and Chrysler brands. The small cars would be built in Serbia.
Fiat also plans to continue the integration of the Chrysler and Lancia brands. Lancia will land a re-badged version of the Canadian-built 300 in 2011, as well as a Lancia version of the Chrysler Town & Country. A year later the Lancia lineup will feature a U.S. made compact, followed by a U.S. built hatchback in 2012.

Report: Chrysler's Sebring replacement to be named Nassau

Flash back to the 2007 Detroit Auto Show and sitting on the Chrysler stand was the Nassau concept. Nothing ever came of the angular five-door, but some of the elements that debuted on the show car eventually worked their way onto the Sebring. That connection stands to be revived with a report by the Detroit Free Press that the Sebring's replacement will carry the Nassau name when the all-new midsize sedan goes on sale within the next two years.

The concept's sleek lines aren't likely to inspire the Nassau, but considering Chrysler purchased the name, it's fair game and will help to put Chrysler's lackluster sedan out of the public consciousness.

Chrysler hasn't official confirmed the name yet, but when the Nassau goes on sale – likely in 2012 – it will be joined by the refreshed Dodge Avenger, with a thoroughly revised interior and a choice of either a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or Chrysler's new Pentastar V6.

500+ HP 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 Coming This Summer

Once upon a time, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 laid claim to being the fastest SUV in the world. Since then, Porsche's Cayenne Turbo and BMW's X5 and X6 M have nabbed the title away. Jeep doesn't look to be content with that scenario, however, and our sources within the company have confirmed that the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is indeed still coming, and it's coming this summer.

We don't have any official details on what the crazy-hot SUV might have under its new skin, but as Chrysler previewed last year, we expect a larger, beefier version of the current 6.1-liter HEMI engine, enlarged to 6.4-liters with output over 500 horsepower, and possibly as high as the BMW M SUVs' 555-horsepower figure. That, combined with the new 2011 Grand Cherokee's improved chassis, could prove a brutal combination, and enough to take back the top spot in the nonsensically-fast but awesome juiced-up SUV segment.

Such a truck wouldn't be any help in meeting CAFE standards, but it won't be sold in any considerable volume, either, so the halo shot might be worth it for Jeep. With a suitable suspension setup and enough features thrown at it, it could even pose a reasonable alternative to the German (and English, if you throw in the Range Rover Sport Supercharged) alternatives.

That's all we have on the Grand Cherokee SRT8 for now, but stay tuned this summer for more, as we have a feeling we'll be getting a closer look at what's in store for speed-loving Jeep fans in a couple months.

Marchionne wants to match the success of Nissan’s Carlos Ghosn

After about a year and a half after CEO Sergio Marchionne fearlessly said that he will turn Chrysler Group into one of the world’s top five carmakers, it has become apparent that this currently isn’t the case.

On Dec. 11, 2008, Marchionne spoke to 1,500 people in the auditorium at Fiat’s Turin headquarters. He said that to achieve the goal and to survive longterm, Fiat would have to forge alliances. History tells us that this didn’t go as planned at all. After Marchionne got Chrysler, he moved to acquire General Motor Co.’s Opel, Saab, and South American operations last year. But for one reason or another, he failed as GM either wanted to sell to another company or chose to keep the unit. Giuseppe Berta, a Fiat expert and business professor at Milan’s Bocconi University, said that Marchionne had visualized a “large automotive group under the control of Fiat.” Stephen Pope, chief global equity strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald in London, thinks that Marchionne will have a harder time at getting to this goal. He faces the challenge of at least getting to the level of success that Carlos Ghosn, who is the CEO of the alliance of Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co., has achieved. Pope said that to date, Ghosn’s 11-year-old Renault-Nissan partnership is the only major auto alliance that has worked. Pope said that Ghosn is moving even farther ahead as it was announced earlier this month that Renault-Nissan had entered a deal with Daimler AG to share small-car and engine technology.

Chrysler Group’s 25% sales gain in April was the biggest since July 2005

The 25% sales increase that Chrysler Group posted in April was its largest since it reported a 27% gain in July 2005. In April 2009, Chrysler declared bankruptcy. Last month, Chrysler effortlessly topped its weak year-earlier sales.

But rather than being a one-month occurrence, Chrysler’s recovery actually began in February. Chrysler also posted its first monthly gain, 1% in over two years. Chrysler also recorded an 8% in March. Last week, Chrysler said it rightfully forecasted an increase of more than 20% in April. The April sales increase was achieved with a drop in incentives, more than $1,000 below the year-earlier level. Chrysler’s incentives last month were still higher than those of any of its major competitors. Chrysler’s sales increase in July 2005 was due to the offer that US automakers made to all buyers for the same discounts as employees. In June 2005, General Motors led the charge, resulting to an all-out incentives race among automakers.

Lancia Delta spotted in Michigan, preparing U.S. debut

Earlier this week, a white and black prototype of Lancia Delta hatchback with Chrysler badging was spotted going on test runs in Auburn Hills, near Chrysler’s Technical Center (CTC). This fuels speculations that Chrysler-Fiat has specific plans for this vehicle, which actually was showcased at the latest Detroit Auto Show.

At the public roads around the CTC, this hatchback was seen being taken through some serious road-testing. It zipped back and forth through security checkpoints, and it duplicated familiar test routes. Notably, the Delta test car that was spotted in Michigan has Lancia badging and its standard Lancia grille (instead of the Chrysler-style, horizontal-slat grille on the Detroit concept car), plus different wheels. If Chrysler-Fiat chose to offer the Chrysler Lancia to the US market, some basic changes that could be done are a grille swap and a wheel swap. With this sighting, it appears now that the Delta will soon go into actual production for the US market.

Rendered: U.S.-Bound Fiat 500 Four-Door

Many in the U.S. have been hoping to receive the wildly popular Fiat 500 minicar for the past couple of years but a lack of interest in small cars has largely held it back. Now, with Fiat's alliance with Chrysler in place the Italian auto giant has a gateway to the lucrative U.S. market and the first model to arrive under the new alliance will be the 500, though it’s launch is still more than six months away.
The 500 will be sold in Chrysler dealerships and it will be the only Fiat-badged model in the U.S. market, but it appears there will be several different variants, possibly up to four. The four models are expected to include the regular hatchback, the 500C convertible, a ‘Giardinetta' wagon, and the high-performance Abarth version.
While the hatchback and 500C are near-certainties for the U.S. market, recent reports claim a four-door model is also headed our way, previewed here in this computer-generated rendering. This four-door model isn’t expected to be launched in Europe until the end of 2011 so any U.S. release won’t be until after that, likely as a 2012 model.
It is described as a compact minivan because of its hatchback rear opening and high roof design, and its footprint is both longer and wider than the regular 500 hatchback on which it’s based.

Marchionne: Fiat-Based Chryslers On Sale Before 2012, IPO Possible

While it’s looking more and more likely that the first Alfa Romeos won’t go on sale in the U.S. until 2012, a new range of Chrysler models based on Fiat platforms could be on sale before then. Chrysler is planning to use Fiat’s compact car expertise to develop a range of new fuel efficient models, and according to Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne the first cars could be on sale by the fourth quarter of 2011.
“We've run extensive clinics on the first vehicles. We're 98 percent there on styling,” Marchionne told reporters from Automotive News. “My expectation today is we'll be able to get this car into the market Q4 2011. We continue to work pretty aggressively on timing.”
The first model is expected to be a compact sedan, something Chrysler has lacked in its lineup ever since the demise of the Dodge Neon back in 2006. There could also be a new hatchback model, which Chrysler previewed with its rebadged Lancia Delta that was on show back at January’s Detroit Auto Show.
According Marchionne, Chrysler’s board is also considering an initial public offering (IPO) of stock after reporting an operating profit of $143 million for the first quarter of the year.
“This is an issue the board will look at very closely for the remainder of 2010,” he explained. “The fact we've gotten this far would suggest there's a strengthening base for looking at an IPO in a much shorter time frame than most people would expect.”

2012 Dodge Durango spied with little camo!

Following an earlier image leak, our spy photographers have once again caught up with Dodge’s next-generation Durango. Earlier Durango prototypes were covered in heavy plastic cladding, but these ute’s were caught wearing only a BMW-style tape camouflage.
Code-named “WD,” the Durango will be sharing a unibody chassis with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2011 Mercedes ML-Class. Not all things will be equal as we expect the Benz to sport higher-end running gear than its Chrysler brothers. Fiat may also launch a vehicle on this chassis sometime in 2012-2013. One thing you won’t see on this chassis is a Chrysler Aspen variant.
While the Durango nameplate has been in use since 1998, that may change with this newest iteration. During Chrysler’s marathon presentation of their 5-year plan in November, the word “Durango” was never spoken. In the PowerPoint presentation, it was referred to simply as “Full-size CUV.” Rumors have suggested the next-gen Durango could be renamed the Magnum – a name last used on a low-slung sports wagon.
Whatever the name, the new CUV/SUV will follow Dodge’s current design language, highlighted by the brand’s signature cross-hair grille.
Powertrains for the Dodge should be identical to the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with the next-gen, Pentastar 280 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and the 390 hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8 on tap. A Fiat-sourced diesel motor, as well as a dual clutch transmission, may eventually find its way into the Dodge. Other features we expect to see are optional 3rd row seating, power lift gate, adaptive cruise control and parking sensors.
Based on a leaked production list we expect this new Dodge CUV to start production on November 8, 2010 at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan.
