Features minor styling tweaks

By Michael Gauthier
July 20, 2010 10:00 am
Filed Under: European, Fiat, Special Editions

Fiat has unveiled the special edition 500 Blackjack.
The car features matte black paint, glossy accents (door handles and mirror housings), 16-inch alloy wheels, and red brake calipers. Inside, the cabin is outfitted with leather upholstery and silver trim.
Under the hood, four different engines will be available. On the petrol side, there's the 900cc TwinAir with 84 bhp (63 kW / 85 PS), a 1.2-liter with 69 bhp (51 kW / 70 PS), and a 1.4-liter with 100 bhp (75 kW / 101 PS). If you're a diesel fan, Fiat offers the 95 bhp (71 kW / 96 PS) 1.3-liter Multijet II.
The car will be launched in September and available in "key European markets." In Italy, the top of the line version will be priced from €18,350.

2012 Dodge Magnum: First Blurry Photo

This is the 2012 Dodge Magnum — a.k.a. the new Dodge Durango — revealed in a photo taken indoors at what appears to be the Jefferson North plant. Built on the GC Mercedes platform, it looks better with camo

Dodge releases 2010 Mopar Challenger pics

2010 Dodge Mopar '10 Challenger – Click above for high-res image gallery

Good news if you've been itching to get a look at something other than a renderings and grainy detail shots of the Mopar '10 Challenger. Dodge has just dropped a hefty batch of photos of the model in full. Supposedly, the company is only building 500 examples of the car, each of with a price tag of $39,000 if you want a six-speed manual. If you can live your life with a slushbox, Dodge will give you the car for $38,000. For that kind of coin, you get a raucous hood scoop and your choice of three accent colors.

Likewise, the interior will also wear a slew of new niceties, including Mopar logos embroidered in the side bolsters of both front seats, matching thread accents and a new steering wheel. Unfortunately, the car is based off of an R/T model, so don't expect to see the heavy-breathing 6.1-liter V8 from the Challenger SRT8 under the hood.

2011 Chrysler 300C cars

Updated 3/24/2010: first paragraph changed
The Chrysler 300C launch is currently scheduled for November 30, 2010 with a preview expected to take place in September. CEO Sergio Marchionne reportedly sent designers back to the drawing board when he saw the 2011 300C, demanding a more distinctive look; for that reason, it will probably not look like the renderings and photos shown on this page. Two sources have now said that the images of the upcoming 300 are not what the car looks like, though they came from the five year plan presentation and images shown behind a Lancia Delta at the Detroit auto show.)
How close is the photo above? A source said, “The lines have been refined. They focused on the weaknesses. The grille was addressed. The interior is different from the spy shots now, the steering wheel is a little different, and the speedometer is more refined. The gauge cluster looks like a contemporary Swiss watch.”

On the inside, we were told not surprisingly to expect much better materials, fit, and finish. The flat instrument cluster and straight, square dashboard have been replaced, with the new one having more contours and curves, with contrasting materials in both color and texture. Blind-spot detection is also in the works for all upper level Chrysler cars and multipurpose vehicles, along with other new-to-Chrysler safety features.

Chrysler has had more latitude in building the second-generation LX than the first, which means:

New versions of the 2011 Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, and 2011 Dodge Charger will be shown in calendar-year 2010, and will be made exclusively in Brampton, including models for sale in Europe. The revised Challenger may or may not lag the others. There has been no hint of a luxury version yet, but (speculation) it is possible that the 300 will be on a longer wheelbase than the Charger. (That would make room for the 200C).
Compared with the current LX series, the next generation — also termed LX (previously tagged LY) — will be:

General rumors

  • SRT-8s will eventually use a production version of the 392 (6.4) Hemi with about 450 hp and MDS for better gas mileage. This might be used at launch.
  • The 300C was to be used as the basis for three Mercedes classes: E, CLS, and R (starting in 2010-2012). We don’t know that status of that deal and probably never will.
  • The Challenger convertible is on hold. The Imperial seems to be dead for the moment along with the 200C four-door sedan.
  • “Dodgeguy1961” reported the following engine list for the Chrysler 300 and 300C; a year or so later, he was vindicated by the presence of these engines in the Five Year Plan:
    • 3.0 liter Phoenix V6 (possibly for export)
    • 3.0 liter Mercedes turbodiesel V6 — same as the current version — possibly export-only
    • 3.6 liter Phoenix V6 — we’d guess around 290 hp
    • 5.7 liter Hemi MDS/VCT — we’d guess around 360 hp
    • 6.4 liter Hemi (SRT) — we’d guess around 440-470 hp
  • Transmissions are unknown and may not have been decided on. The W5A580 5-speed automatic will be the only transmission offered when the 2011 Chrysler 300C is launched. Two rumors are currently floating — one that a ZF-designed, joint-venture-built eight-speed automatic will eventually join the fleet, and one that Chrysler is working on or licensing a seven-speed variant of the W5A580. The latter would presumably be less disruptive and require fewer tooling changes and less training of dealer mechanics, and would presumably share many parts and require less of the electronics people.

Fiat ready to come back to U.S., Fiat 500 minivan coming to U.S. in 2012

Fiat 500

After a 30 year North American absence, Fiat is getting ready to return. Starting in 2011, Fiats will be available purchase in about 200 U.S. Chrysler Group dealerships. The initial lineup will consist mainly of the 500 minicar, and four variants thereof.
Fiat also plans to release a convertible version of the 500 in 2011, and 2012 will see an electric version to be sold exclusively in the United States. Also in 2012, Fiat will be selling an Abarth branded performance version of the 500.
To round out the selection, the company will also be importing from Serbia, a four-door version of the 500, where the model is also set to go on sale in 2012. The four-door will be classified as a minivan upon its arrival in the U.S. due to the high roof and rear hatch. That car will be built in Turin, Italy on a longer and wider platform than the two-door 500. It has been reported that Fiat will drop the 500 badging for ’600.’

Alfa Romeo 2uettottanta Concept By Pininfarina
Enlarge Photo
Fans of Italian styling are anxiously awaiting Fiat and Alfa Romeo's return to the U.S. now that the alliance deal between the Italian auto giant and Chrysler is in full swing. However, while Fiat is confirmed to be here at the end of this year with its 500 minicar, the more premium Alfa Romeo brand (not including the exclusive 8C Competizione supercar) won’t arrive until 2012.
What new models Alfa Romeo has planned is still up in the air but today we have a few more details, including word from Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne that Alfa Romeo will return to the U.S. with a full model lineup. The hope is that Alfa Romeo will be able to make sales of roughly 85,000 cars in the U.S. annually by 2014. The brand’s total sales worldwide last year were just 103,000 vehicles.
Entry to the new Alfa Romeo lineup will start with the Mito hatchback, which arrives in 2013 and will only be available in five-door trim. A three-door version is available in overseas markets.
A second hatchback, the Giulietta five-door will arrive in local showrooms following an update to the model in 2014. Underpinning the Giulietta is Fiat’s new Compact platform, which in modified form will spawn models for the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands.
One of the most crucial models in Alfa Romeo’s new lineup is the upcoming Giulia mid-sized sedan and wagon. The Giulia is the replacement for the stylish 159 sold overseas and will be available with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Engine options will include Chrysler’s Pentastar V-6 or a four-cylinder unit with MultiAir technology. No word yet on its release date.
Some brand new Alfa Romeo models not already on sale overseas will also arrive. These include a sporty rear-wheel drive convertible, a compact SUV and bigger mid-size SUV.

Spy Shots: 2012 Dodge Magnum interior revealed
by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Jul 28th 2010 at 9:59AM

2012 Dodge Magnum spy shots

We may seen the unadulterated exterior of the The Dodge Magnum/Durango, but so far the interior has eluded spy shooters the world over. No more. For those still debating if or how closely the Dodge SUV copies the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the interiors should make for less of an argument.

Materials and details have been updated over previous Dodge interiors, and done so in a way that mimics the standard set by the Jeep. Not that there's anything wrong with that... We do wonder if it will get a little more color to break up all that blackness, though. We will likely find out in person in Los Angeles later this year, or Detroit in January 2011. Scope it out on your own in the gallery of high-res photos below.

Chrysler 200C patent drawings leaking out?

by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Aug 2nd 2010 at 9:29AM

We may have gotten our first glimpse at what the production version of the Chrysler 200C will look like. Website Noticas Automotivas is reporting that it has managed to get its hands on a slew of patent drawings of the car, and from what we can tell, the new, smaller four-door has stuck fairly close to the concept we first saw at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. That includes the car's stylish curled front fenders and bulging rear sheetmetal. It looks like the 200C will also wear similar shaped headlights, though whether they turn out to be as sharp looking as the LED/projection units on the concept remains to be seen.

We haven't heard a whole heck of a lot about the 200C since the car cropped up in the Motor City. With the Sebring finally on its way out for good, we knew that Chrysler had to be hard at work on a replacement – and if these patent drawings are any indication, the new model may just be the 200C. If Chrysler can manage to infuse the car with same attention to detail that we've seen in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and shove the new Pentastar V6 under the hood, it could be a force to be reckoned with. Head over to Noticas Automotivas to check out all of the patent shots.

Non-Chrysler Group dealers may receive franchises to sell Fiats, says Marchionne

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat and Chrysler, said that there would be some non-Chrysler Group dealers that could receive franchises to sell Fiats.
Marchionne told reporters that there will be a “large part of the distribution” that will be included in Chrysler’s environment. Marchionne was interviewed after President Barack Obama made an appearance at Chrysler’s Jefferson North Assembly Plant. Marchionne also revealed that Fiat franchisees may also receive the Alfa Romeo franchise, which will be back in the US in 2012. In addition, Chrysler already has started making pre-production versions of the Fiat 500 minicar at its Toluca, Mexico, factory, and it is up for volume production late in the year.

Fiat’s plans include four 500 models — the base 500 two-door hatch, a convertible, a sporty Abarth and a four-door hatch with a raised roof. In early July, Chrysler distributed packets to its dealerships in 125 markets in 41 states it thinks are prime markets for small cars.
This August, interested dealers will be invited to a briefing on the Fiat franchise at Chrysler’s Auburn Hills headquarters. Proposals from the dealerships would then be reviewed and will afterward, make an announcement of the ones chosen for the Fiat network in September.
Marchionne emphasized that Fiat will be a standalone franchise. He said that Fiat’s potential is “unique” because there is “nothing Jeepish about the 500.” Chrysler planners believe that the Fiat 500 will be popular mainly in urban markets where there is much traffic and where parking spaces are at a premium.

Alfa Romeo’s return to U.S. to include convertible, compact SUV, mid-size SUV

2011 Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has ambitious plans Alfa Romeo’s return to the United States, a move that has been in the works since 2000, when General Motors and Fiat signed a joint venture that eventually fell apart. Marchionne says the wants to transform Alfa into a “full-line premium” automaker. The brand will make its full return to the United States in 2012. Fiat eventually wants North America to account for 85,000 units of Alfa’s 500,000 global sales by 2014. Last year, the brand sold 103,000 vehicles globally?
So what’s in the works for Alfa Romeo in the United States?
First and foremost, the Alfa Romeo MiTo will make it to the U.S. in 2013 – however, Alfa is currently working on a five-door variant of the three-door hatchback. Only the five-door will be imported to North America. The new Alfa Romeo Giulietta will come to North America when it is upgraded in 2014.

Alfa also plan on bringing the Giulia mid-size sedan and station wagon to the United States in late 2012. The North American version of the Giulia will be powered by Chrysler’ new Pentastar V6 and a 2.4L inline 4-cylinder from Fiat with MultiAir technology making 190-hp.
Also in the works is a convertible for 2013, a compact SUV for 2012 (based on Fiat’s Compact Wide platform) and a mid-size SUV for 2014. The mid-size SUV will be built by Chrysler and will be exported to Europe as well.

Lancia Stratos revival further details and photos surface

Lancia Stratos revival, 800, 05.08.2010

Stratos model said to be a one-off creation for a rich European industrialist

Some more photos of an alleged recreated 1972 Lancia Stratos have emerged. Last time, we were shown two pics of a Lancia Stratos said to be taken on an Alfa Romeo test track and that was supposed to be recent but couldn't be authenticated.
Here we have, though, some additional photos of the same car said to be a one-of-a-kind recreation of the Stratos from a joint project between Pininfarina and Fenomenon Holistic Design. The scoop is that a car enthusiast with a substantial amount of whim-spending capital has commissioned this single unit of the Stratos for his/her own enjoyment and ownership.
The underpinnings of the car are from a Ferrari F430 Scuderia, although the wheelbase may have been shortened to maintain the Stratos' exceptional road agility.
This latest Stratos creation recalls the Fenomenon Stratos Concept which premiered at the Geneva auto show in 2005. That model, made of an aluminum chassis and carbon fiber body components, sported a 425 PS (313 kW / 419 hp) V8 engine.

Report: Fiat moving planned production of Chrysler Sebring back to U.S.

by Sam Abuelsamid (RSS feed) on Aug 6th, 2010 at 10:28AM
2009 Chrysler 200C concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Following the recent news that Chrysler will re-hire 900 workers and add a second shift back at its Sterling Heights, MI assembly plant comes word that the next-generation replacements for the Sebring and Dodge Avenger will be produced there. Supposedly, Fiat had plans to build the cars in Turin, Italy along with the Alfa Romeo Giulia, but could not reach a suitable agreement with its unions on work rules.

The idea of building the mid-size sedans in Italy for export to North America seemed highly implausible anyhow. The family sedan segment is among the most competitive in this market and pricing pressures are tough enough without factoring in exchange rates. Most of the Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and soon even Volkswagen mid-size models are or will be built locally in order to keep costs down. Regardless of the reasoning, according to Automotive News, it now looks like the new sedans will be built in the plant north of Detroit on Fiat platforms beginning in 2013.

To be fair, we all appreciate new lines on a car. That is why the 05 mustang was such a success! It wasn't played out (at the time) as it was a fresh take on a classic look. By now, however, most people have grown tired of the retro look.

Spy Shots: 2012 Chrysler 300 is more than a nosejob

by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Aug 9th 2010 at 3:29PM
The next Chrysler 300 – Click above for high-res image gallery

The next Chrysler 300 has had some chiseling and wedging applied to its current stoic proportions. The perfectly horizontal shoulder line now sweeps up from a lower front end into a shorter decklid. The nearly perpendicular front and rear on the 2010 have also been reshaped, particularly in the rear. Detail-wise, only the mirrors appear to have carried over, with what looks like new headlight hardware in an angled design, LED taillights in back, an integrated exhaust treatment and new rear window glass. Get a closer look in the gallery of high-res photos below while we wait to see what magic has been done to the inside...

Rumormill: Lancia Stratos revival won't be one-off, production planned

by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Aug 10th 2010 at 4:24PM

The story of the coachbuilt Lancia Stratos gets more curious by the day. Although it appeared that the homage was a Pininfarina-designed one-off for a wealthy and anonymous European, Car & Driver has done some snooping of its own and reports that it wasn't exactly designed by Pininfarina and it won't exactly be a one-off.

Supposedly in the works for four years, word is the new Stratos was penned by Jason Castriota when he was still at Pininfarina before departing for Stile Bertone. Italiaspeed has a sketch of a Stratos with a different front end, signed by Castriota, that was published in the Japanese magazine Zoom. If that sketch is accurate it could jibe with what a tipster wrote to us, saying that the client had asked the front end be changed to something more traditional. Even though the C/D notes the photo above as having been taken on Pininfarina's roof, according to C/D it is Bertone that will get credit for this new Stratos – and we supposed Castriota will, too, eventually.

The best news for all those commenters disappointed that there would be just one: rumor is this thing is going into production. If true, it would be a huge deal for Lancia, an underperforming brand with rebadged Chryslers that would have this to parade around the world. Everyone wins. And to that shadowy, monied-up American, if you made this happen, we salute you.

Fiat 500

Chrysler announced last month that it has started the dealer selection process for the reintroduction of the Fiat brand in the United States. The Auburn Hills automaker has now invited 600 dealers to a meeting at its headquarters later this month to learn more about what the requirements will be for them to sell Fiats in the United States.
The first Fiat for the North American market will be the 500 hatchback, which will be built at the company’s Toluca, Mexico. Sales of the Fiat 500 will begin in December. The Fiat 500 Cabrio will join dealers in 2011. It is also rumored that Fiat plans on selling a four-door Fiat 500 that will be classified as a minivan in the U.S. In 2012, selected Fiat dealerships will also sell an electric-version of the 500.
Out of the 600 dealers that are going to be invited to Auburn Hills, only 200 will make the cut to sell the Italian brand.

The New Lancia Stratos Is Gorgeous, Possibly V8-Powered

The new Lancia Stratos has given in to the frenzy it's caused and posed pretty for the camera. Not only that but we have details too, like how it's got a Ferrari V8, ceramic brakes and a cost-is-no-object development budget.

So you fancy this new Lancia Stratos, huh? Well, this baby's got it all, the compact size, the clamshell openings, a tight, race-oriented cockpit and Ferrari power. A few things have changed though. Gone are the pop-up head lights, a victim of the times more than anything, and rather than a V6 mounted midship, instead there's a V8. Speculation as to which one is still a little wild, with Italiaspeed insinuating they think the beating heart of a 599 lives back there. That's an awful lot of engine for such a short wheelbase.

Also new are ceramic brakes all around and center locking wheel hubs, along with the undying affection of everyone familiar with the original. The program's supposedly been under development for as long as four years and is now coming to fruition with a very high-dollar budget. My offer to fist fight Matt Hardigree for first drive privileges still stands. [Italiaspeed]

2011 Dodge Durango Partially Revealed In New Teasers

August 16th, 2010 Rumors abound on the web that the next Dodge Durango may wear the Magnum name that once graced the wagon version of the Dodge Charger/Chrysler 300, however, following the launch of an official teaser site, we can now confirm that the new vehicle will come onto the market at the end of the year as the 2011 Dodge Durango. Appearing on the teaser site are several revealing shots of the new Durango, which together with a previously leaked shot, confirm a huge change from the current model, which looks a bit bloated and Ram-like. The new model is decidedly tighter, with sculpted curves and a front end that's vaguely Charger or Challenger-esque Its running gear will most likely be shared with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This means power is expected to come from a similar set of engines, including the company's 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with an expected rating of 290 horsepower, and a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 rated around 350 horsepower. An SRT8 version is possible, with the rumor mill suggesting a new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 for this high-performance model. We'll find out all the details closer to its unveiling at the end of the year. In the meantime, you can check out the teaser site by following the jump below. [Dodge]

New Lancia Stratos Is Ferrari F430-based

After days of teasing pictures we've got the full story of the new Lancia Stratos, straight from the backer's mouth. It's a Ferrari F430-powered retro sexmobile, built by a German billionaire after twenty years of dreaming.

It's a simple story: man loves car, man is billionaire, man spends piles of money recreating modern version of car. It's noble. The new Lancia Stratos is a weapon of war mixed with a labor of love... a weapon of love? It's the creation of billionaire car nut and CEO of supplier Brose KG, Michael Stoschek, a long-time Stratos and rally car fanatic. Its creation is a long time coming. Long like 24 years long, like 1986, when Stoschek met Chris Hrabalek in Alta Badia, Italy at a the World Stratos Meet.
Stoschek and Hrabalek met with the designers at Pininfarina to hammer out a car in early 2008. The design started under the hand of rising design star Jason Castriota and eventually moved to the designers at Bertone, which was the studio behind the original Stratos. It's based around the Ferrari F430 chassis and its 4.3-liter V8 engine with an all carbon fiber body, carbon ceramic brakes, a tiny wheelbase like the original, and a weight-to-power ratio of just 5.5 lbs per horsepower.
As of now there is only one prototype vehicle, but there may be as many as 25 copies built when the design is finalized.

New Stratos project gets itself a website, confirms Ferrari F430-based

by Jeremy Korzeniewski (RSS feed) on Aug 17th, 2010 at 3:30PM

The New Lancia Stratos project has made itself even more legitimate by getting a full-blown presence on the web. Well... kinda. While there is a fresh website for the New Stratos, much of the car's precious details are blacked-out. We assume that will change leading up to the car's official debut, which the website confirms will take place in November.

We also learn that the Stratos revival is a private project by Michael Stoschek, a successful businessman who heads the fifth-largest auto parts supplier in Germany and campaigned as a vintage rally car driver, along with his son Maximilian. As rumored, the New Stratos is indeed based on the guts of a Ferrari F430 and its bodywork is crafted completely from carbon fiber, allowing for a power-to-weight ratio of less than five pounds per horsepower and a 50:50 weight distribution.

Confirmation also comes that Jason Castriota was in charge of the design at Pininfarina until he left for Stile Bertone. Pininfarina's Luca Borgogno apparently completed the project, including its interior. It's not yet decided if this car will be a one-off (there is currently only one in existence) or if a small production run of 25 units will be completed. We supposed that would depend on demand for the car and by how much it would cost to reproduce. We vote yes, obviously.
