Default KIA | Stonic

The Stonic could debut in Frankfurt.
Kia's crossover offensive is set to continue with a brand-new model named Stonic. The soft-roader could make its global debut this fall at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
The South Korean company explains the Stonic name is a combination of the words "speedy" and "tonic." The teaser sketches hints at a bolder evolution of Kia's design language characterized by thin angular headlights, sculpted bumpers, and pronounced haunches. However, keep in mind sketches can be spectacularly misleading.
The cabin features a clean, tech-oriented design. The dashboard is dominated by a large color touch screen underlined by a piece of U-shaped trim. All of the buttons typically scattered across the cabin are grouped in a cluster on the center console, which gives the rest of the cabin an uncluttered look.
Kia isn't ready to divulge what lies under the sheet metal. British magazine Autocar reports the Stonic is closely related to the funky-looking Hyundai Kona that will debut next week, meaning it will come standard with front-wheel drive, a four-cylinder engine, and an automatic transmission.

We'll bring you more details about the Kia Stonic in the coming weeks. When it lands, it will slot below the Niro as the company's smallest and most affordable crossover. Its main rivals will include the Nissan Juke -- which is allegedly getting axed in the United States -- and the Toyota C-HR.

2018 Kia Stonic Mini Crossover Gets An Early Reveal

Here’s our first look in and around Kia’s brand-new Stonic subcompact crossover that follows barely a week after the presentation of Hyundai’s Kona.

Despite the Korean group’s efforts to give each model a distinct character on the outside, especially up front where each car incorporates their respective brand’s styling features, you can tell that the Hyundai Kona and Kia Stonic are related.

They have a similar footprint and silhouette with both companies offering customization options such as two-tone schemes with different color roofs, with Kia going a step further by adding the exterior mirror caps as well.

From the single image we have of the Stonic’s cabin, the interiors seem to be a bit more differentiated, with each car getting a different dashboard and trims. Again, there’s a splash of color in the Kia with orange accents around the center consoles.

We should have official details soon on the Stonic, but expect similar dimensions to the Kona that’s 4,165mm (164 in.) long, 1,800mm (70.9 in) wide and 1,550mm (61 in.) tall, with a 2,600mm (102.4 in.) wheelbase.

Powertrains will most likely be common too, with Hyundai having already announced the availability of an optional all-wheel drive system, along with several engines, including a 147hp (1459PS) 2.0-liter and a 175hp (177PS) 1.6-liter turbo. Markets outside North America will get a 1.0-liter T-GDI turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine and 1.6 diesel units, while Hyundai also announced a pure-electric version too.

The new Stonic will have its global motor show premiere in Frankfurt this September.

New Stonic Sub-Compact SUV Is The Most Customizable Kia Ever

If you not really feeling the funky styling of the Hyundai Kona, then you can always go for its cousin, the Kia Stonic, and its more understated design.

It's shown publicly for the first time in Frankfurt, almost three months after its online presentation, and it will go on sale across Europe later in the fall, with pricing to be announced.

The new Kia Stonic can be had in up to 20 two-tone color combinations, with a choice of five distinctive roof finishes, and plenty of personalization inside, and this makes it the brand's most customizable model ever.

Customers will also get to choose from a range of lightweight petrol and diesel engines, each one paired with a manual gearbox. Once they finish configuring their version of the SUV, they will get to enjoy the steering and suspension, which are said to have been specially tuned for the European market.

As expected, the small SUV gets a generous range of equipment, depending on the specification, and the infotainment system, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, comes at no extra cost.

Driver assistance systems are also be part of the offerings, with the list counting the usual amenities, from the Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Recognition, to the Lane Departure Warning.

Spyshot: Kia Stonic Hybrid capture for the first time

The Stonic model is Kia’s small SUV and now it’ll add one more zero-emission model offered by Kia Motors.

The Soul EV was released back in 2014 and it was the first Electric Vehicle Kia offered to customers. Even though this model is still not widely available yet, soon the Soul will receive an update for a long range (hopefully more available too). Recently Kia announced their Niro Subcompact SUV model will also obtain a zero emission model becoming Kia’s second EV car.

The Kia Niro EV is not out yet and Kia is yet bringing another EV model, The Stonic EV. It is said by the end of 2018 we should have 3 EV car available to consumers. This represent a big step ahead of other manufactures since they are not offering a wide availability of EV cars and at that car size. Once again, this confirms Kia’s commitment to future Electric Vehicles.
The Stonic EV could come with a 88 kW electric engine, this engine is currently found at the IONIQ as well, and the battery pack could run for about 200 miles.
Stay tuned for more pictures and details!

The Kia Stonic roars through the urban jungle

Kia says its new compact SUV, the Stonic, has the power to surprise. And it does. It looks superb, but that’s not the surprising part as I’ve got used to the latest direction taken by designers, who seemingly want to be a tad more adventurous these days rather than settling for what’s been “on trend”.

No, for me, the surprising thing was just how sporty the car handled and sounded, given the engine in my test car was just 998cc and possessing of just three cylinders.

That last figure should have been a bit of a giveaway, for it is a truism that three-cylinder powerplants always possess a throaty roar; a sound that certainly endears itself with my motoring journalist colleagues.

And me, of course.

Just firing the starter button tempts you to press down on the loud pedal once or twice to get an aural fix. Don’t get me wrong, this is no untamed sports car, but it sure sounds good, and rewards some spirited driving.

There's a boot space of 1,155 litres with the rear seats folded (Image: Kia)

The sprint time (0 to 60 mph) is given as 9.9 seconds; it just seems faster. And, out on the open road, it handles pretty impressively; sharp and responsive handling despite its tall SUV bodystyle.

I should explain that there’s also a 1.4-litre, four cylinder, petrol engine (the cheapest option), but it’s nowhere near as powerful – 99 horsepower compared with 120 for the three cylinder, which makes it almost two seconds slower in the sprint.

The difference is that the small capacity engine is equipped with a turbocharger and, once that kicks in, it leaves its sibling Stonic standing.

There’s also a 1.6-litre diesel, which I haven’t driven, but comparing it to the 1-litre petrol on paper, in terms of the entry trim level, the diesel is £800 more expensive and is only 10mpg more efficient in terms of fuel consumption. You do the maths.

The Stonic is not only one of the smartest Kias to date, but also one of the smartest in terms of packaging
The Stonic is not only one of the smartest Kias to date, but also one of the smartest in terms of packaging (Image: Kia)
Stonic is based on the platform of the latest Kia Rio supermini. Stonic and Rio share the same 2,580mm wheelbase, but Stonic is 70mm taller to give it a clear SUV stance, and it is wider with a longer rear overhang to maximise passenger and luggage space.

Stonic is not only one of the smartest-Kias to date, but also one of the smartest in terms of packaging.

In the UK there is a five-model line-up based on grade “2” and “First Edition” trim levels. All versions offer an extensive package of connectivity features, including links to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via pre-downloaded smartphone apps, while advanced electronic driver assistance systems, such as autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and automatic switching between high and low headlight beams, are available.

The Stonic “First Edition” also has Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (Image: Kia)

Standard features besides those for connectivity, safety and driver assistance include 17in alloy wheels, air conditioning, all-round electric windows with an automatic function on the driver’s side, roof rails, rear parking sensors, remote locking, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, a 3.5in supervision cluster, Bluetooth with voice recognition and music streaming, automatic light control, bi-function projection headlamps with static cornering lights and LED daytime running lights.

There are body-coloured bumpers, door mirror casings and door handles, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and 60:40 split rear seats. A six-speaker audio system is standard.

The “First Edition” version stands out even more, thanks to two-tone paintwork. The roof, wing mirror casings and rear spoiler are picked out in either black, lime green, red or orange, depending on the main body colour. There are also colour accents on the seat upholstery and around the lower centre console and display screen areas to co-ordinate with the choice of roof colour.

There’s also automatic air-conditioning and privacy glass on the rear side windows.

Worth mentioning is that the Stonic “First Edition” also has Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, to help prevent the car from being accidentally driven into the path of a vehicle approaching from an angle out of the driver’s eye-line.

The increase in overall height, compared with the Rio, has been put to good use to raise ground clearance by 42mm, giving the command-post view out and the enhanced feeling of safety which buyers cite as two of the main reasons for choosing an SUV.

The Stonic has the best shoulder room of any car in the B-SUV class, as well as generous head and legroom front and rear (Image: Kia)
Don’t expect to tackle too much rough terrain, however – I’m not sure this is the car for that sort of off-roading – but it proves more than capable in the urban jungle.

Stonic has the best shoulder room of any car in the B-SUV class, as well as generous head and legroom front and rear, while the extended rear overhang allows for a boot of 352 litres with the 60:40 rear seats upright, and 1,155 litres with them folded. This is 27 litres more than in the Rio. Stonic “First Edition” has a dual-height luggage floor to enhance versatility.

Overall, then, another impressive new model from Kia and I’m looking forward to driving the proper sporty Kia Stinger very shortly.
