Like 7 people post on here in 4 threads a day and JDLM wants to split threads.

I know more than enough about bmws, my brother has an avus blue/dove gray 95 m3 that I always have to help him do little maintenance things on, when it gets driven. I also have a cousin whose a sales manager for a bmw dealership in so cal. So I hear and see plenty about a lot of the newer stuff anytime hes out this way. Im not a rabid owner of a new bmw like you are, so that just puts me in the "occasionally works on one" category.

As for the 4th gen lt1, I wouldnt say theyre a complete waste of time. I know some guys in wichita who consider them to be one their favorites to mod. To each their own I guess, but they say that after addressing the suspension(sub frame connectors, tubular control arms, tubular panhard bar, adjustable torque arm)theyre capable of consistent mid 12s on DRs with a few minor mods. The most important engine mod I remember them saying was getting an electric water pump, it costs the same as one from oreillys, autozone etc. and it gives the opti more of a fighting chance, unless you just want to do an ls coil pack conversion.
Who am I kidding though, Daveb probably already knew that, he was just too refined and modest to say anything.

My lightly modded 94 Z28 automatic could usually outrun the DOHC 96-98 Cobras until guys started figuring that properly gearing the DOHC made a significant difference. I couldn't hang with them after 80mph. The 99-01 fixed Cobras seemed to marginally slower the prior gen DOHC cars, perhaps due to the weight gain.

My roommate in college had a 90 LX notchback with basic mods and 3.73s. My Z28 would crush it from any race, but I miss that LX dearly. No love lost on the Z28 though. My M235 reminds of that old LX in terms of size and power delivery, to some extent.

Nice assumptions once again. I owned, modded, and avidly raced an LT1 for 3.5 years.

Your lt1 z28 must have been a factory freak or he couldn't drive because a notch with gears would stomp it all day long

Should we help JDLM with the new thread title for the split?

I vote-

LTx/LSx vs Ford 4.6

13.4s@103 vs 13.9s@100. He'd get walked after 60mph. That stock intake manifold and short gears didn't do that car any favors on the topend. That motor had nothing above 5000rpms. It needed some breathing help.

Huh?!?

I'm sorry, but there is like zero chance a gear only fox notch pulls a LT1 4th gen Camaro, sans driver error.

Even if the sun shined on a dog's ass that day, it sure wouldn't be able to "stomp it".

That and the 3rd gear ratio of a T5 kills them as well.

I always see Ford guys claim how fast a Fox with a gear change is, but I've never seen one do some spectacular times.

With that said, Fox > LT1 F-Body. I still would love to have an LX-Notch with just a cammed LS3 and a 6 speed and some suspension goodies.

I agree, I'd rather have a clean, manual fox with some goodies over a 4th gen camaro. But stock for stock, the fbody blows it away.

I stand corrected on my statement. Did not realize the lt1 was that fast. First to admit my mistake.

I do know that factory notch with 3.73s and a tire have gone low 13.1-2 all day. 12s with just some bolt ons

I still want a Gallant VR4. First one to crank walk wins.

I know there was a guy that had one around here, if I remember correctly. Saw it at an MKC dyno day once or twice.

On slicks and good DA? Sure, low 13s in the very low 100s is possible with a nutty 60 foot. The car still has no top end though. It's decently stout rear end teamed with slicks is it's advantage at the strip.

Just cars I've run across watching and talking to. Yes on a DR... Probably a good DA but I don't remember locations.

I don't follow anything that's not from a dig so all the top end talk doesn't mean much. I'm sure from a roll the lt1 would walk it. 3.73a are not some steep gear... plenty of guys running 4.10 in NA cars getting down the track just fine.

I definitely underestimated the lt1. I never was around anyone that could get them down the track like that. LS1 sure

I couldn't drive one that fast by any means but people have and do. Getting into the 12s without cracking the motor is pretty easy in a 3100lb foxbody

The "old" LT1s weren't that great, they just held a decent advantage over the 5.0. A cam, intake manifold, headers, and gears on a notch made for the better car, IMO. I used to think the 4th gen F-body was so much better looking, LOL. God was I wrong. I've got a huge soft spot in my heart for a clean 5.0 notchback on the right wheels and simple boltons. Dare I say the Fox is almost nostalgic as a 1st gen Stang and i actually much prefer the Fox. I also like 96-98 Cobras with the wing delete. That 4.6/5.0 DOHC in a notchback would be heaven for me.

If it wasn't for the Optispark the LT1 wouldn't have a terrible reputation.

Overall it made great power, especially compared to it's competition at the time.

I wanted a 95-96 Impala SS SO bad and they held their value well, but I didn't want to fuck around with the engine. Swapping was out of the question at the time and finding a LS swapped one reasonably priced was fucking impossible.
