Default Buick Regal...The wagon

We want this Buick Regal wagon rumor to be true

GM mentioned the long-roof while showing dealers the 2018 Regal sedan.

The car we know in the US as the Buick Regal is sold as a Vauxhall/Opel Insignia in Europe, where it's offered in four-door sedan, five-door liftback, and wagon body styles. Call it a case of wanting what we can't have, but we like the last two body styles a lot. Based on a report from a Buick/GMC dealer meeting in Austin, one of them could be coming to the US soon.

According to a poster identified as 97GreenRS on the forums at GM Inside News, GM showed dealers the 2018 Buick Enclave, Regal, and Regal GS, as well as the 2018 GMC Terrain, and then confirmed it would offer the Regal wagon here in the US. While that wouldn't normally be all that much to go on, we know Buick has been toying with the idea of a wagon for some time. A Regal-badged wagon was spotted way back in 2011. More recently, we reported on a trademark filing for "Tourx" and "Regal Tourx," which suggest a long roof (Tour) and all-wheel drive (x).

If the Regal wagon arrives alongside the base sedan and GS as a 2018 model, we'd expect a debut within the next 15 or so months. That would place it right at the beginning of the 2017 auto show season, which starts next September in Frankfurt, Germany. With that in mind, it seems possible the new Regal would debut first as an Opel Insignia before appearing at a US show like Los Angeles or Detroit, although there's a lot of speculation going on there. We just want to see "Buick" and "wagon" in the same sentence again.

Make it in GS trim, and AWD. This could replace my Jeep and Regal GS.

We hear Buick is testing a Regal wagon with focus groups

It'll probably have quasi-CUV styling like the Volvo V60 Cross Country.

Rumors about a possible Buick Regal wagon have come and gone for the past few years, and today we have another one. A friend of Autoblog recently let slip that Buick is talking with customers and running focus groups of a new car against the Acura TSX wagon and an unnamed Volvo wagon. Of course the Buick model being used in the focus groups wasn't mentioned, but the Regal is the only Buick in the lineup of comparable size and with a wagon version overseas. Plus, we've heard that Buick told dealers a wagon is in the works at a meeting a few months ago.

We reached out to Buick for comment, however no details were given. A Buick spokesperson told us, "By the end of 2017, we'll be revealing three more new models for a total of seven new Buicks in just 24 months." Of the seven new models, four have been launched: the Cascada, Encore, Envision and LaCrosse. Looking at Buick's current line-up, that leaves three models that haven't been updated yet: the Enclave, Regal and Verano.

This is where a Buick Regal wagon could come in. We know the Enclave is definitely getting a replacement. The large crossover market is huge and GM has a platform for it. We're also expecting a new Regal sedan to come out next year. The Verano, however, is unlikely to see another generation.

If the Verano goes away, that leaves an opening for a new Buick model. Rather than another sedan, Buick probably wants more crossovers, as the company said it expects its current line-up to bring in 70 percent of its sales. It could very easily add another CUV to the line-up by giving the Regal wagon the Volvo Cross Country treatment. Raise the ride height, gird it with plastic fenders and bumpers, and give the wagon a trendy name like "Tourx" or "Regal Tourx," which the company has already trademarked, and Buick's newest crossover is ready to go. In fact, GM has effectively already done this to the Regal's German sibling, the Insignia, in the form of the Insignia Country Tourer, pictured above.

In summary, a CUV-like wagon could give Buick a trendy car in a hot class for a minimal investment. It would even provide Buick with a model that has no equivalents elsewhere in the GM stable, giving the company a bit more distinction. If the company does bring us a wagon version of the Regal, we would expect to see something next year, possibly with the reveal of the normal Regal variants.

I like the wagon concept but I will assume they will ruin it by changing it to a CUV.

I love wagons, but the problem with most of them now is that they are so small. I hope it is true, but who knows. A lot don't survive long.

Regal GS wagon with the 20" wheels and maybe the twin turbo opel engine would be nice. AWD would be a must as well.

A Buick Regal Wagon Might Be Happening But You Probably Won't Like It

Several outlets are reporting that Buick is seriously considering offering some kind of wagon variant of the Regal for the American market and a possible launch in 2017, but the circumstances surrounding such a vehicle are a little confusing.
Back in December, Buick filed for patents for the names Tourx and Regal Tourx. That sounds promising, but automakers have been known to filed for patents for potential model names and never brought those vehicles to market.

It seems that Buick, however, is a bit more serious about the possibility of a Regal longroof. Autoblogreported that at a dealer meeting in Texas last month, Buick revealed future models and a wagon was amongst the planned vehicles. They also added that ďa friend of Autoblog recently let slip that Buick is talking with customers and running focus groups of a new car against the Acura TSX wagon and an unnamed Volvo wagon.Ē

This is where things get a little weird. First, why would Buick field a ďnewĒ model against the Acura TSX wagon, a car that was a sales failure and hasnít been on sale since 2014? Does Buick really think that the market for used TSX Sportwagens is so hot that it can justify another competitor?
Given the name Tourx, which sounds like some kind of wacky ratchet set that you buy from an infomercial for $19.95, my guess is that Buick is going to attempt some kind of lifted, cladded, wagon/crossover thing in the way of the V60 Cross Country or Audi Allroad. We can pretty much expect a rebadged Opel Insignia Country Tourer. Because letís be real, a wagon disguised as a crossover is the only way to sell this type of vehicle to mainstream American car buyers.
So is a Regal wagon really coming? In an official statement Buick said that ďby the end of 2017, weíll be revealing three more new models for a total of seven new Buicks in just 24 months.Ē So if it does come to fruition, it will probably be pitched as some kind of upscale Outback for buyers who want more comfort, but donít want the maintenance cost of the German wagons.

Whatever it looks like Iím all for more wagon choices for American car buyers. But if cars like the Golf Alltrack and Buick Tourx catch on, automakers will start to take some chances and throw us some higher performance versions. I know Iím not the only one who pines for a US spec Insignia VXR SuperSport.

Holy Crap The Next Buick Regal Wagon Looks Gorgeous

This, dear reader, is a 2018 Opel Insignia Sports Tourer. If you live in America thereís a good chance you donít care what a new Opel wagon looks like because you assume you canít buy one anyway. But you might be able to, soon! Because word on the street is this thing is the next Buick Regal wagon.

And believe me, Iím happy with that, because it looks great.
Spy photographers captured the next-gen Opel Insignia wagon in, of all places, Los Angeles this weekend. The current one is sold in the U.S. as the Buick Regal too, and word on the street is thereís a wagon variant headed our way this time.

Our spy says this is the sportier OPC Line model, seen here with big wheels and Brembo brakes; it could be the Regal GS wagon, or ďRegal Tour X,Ē when and if it comes stateside.
I think above all else, itís a strong looker, not terribly dissimilar to the new Volvo V90. This is not a bad thing.
Bring it here, Buick/Opel/General Motors/whoever! This storied brand could use a fresh injection of excitement.

and the sedan

2018 Buick Regal Sedan and Wagon Spied: They're Undisguised and They're Hot

Swap out the Insignia insignias, and you have sharp-looking Buicks.

What It Is: In Europe, the mid-size Opel Insignia is GMís largest mainstream car offering and is sold in sedan, hatchback, and wagon body styles; it competes against cars such as the Ford Mondeo (our Ford Fusion). We Americans get the Insignia sedan as the Buick Regal, so these photos of the completely undisguised next-generation Insignia give us as good a look as any at the next-generation Regal, likely arriving on our shores sometime next year as a 2018 model.

The new Regal looks to have crisp, clean lines and an athletic stance, but the most exciting news from our standpoint is that Buick will offer a Regal wagon here. Given that there have been trademark filings for the name ďRegal TourX,Ē the U.S. version of the wagon may be a sort-of raised, crossover-inspired variant like the Subaru Outback or the Volvo Cross Country, with standard all-wheel drive and a bit of extra body cladding. The sedan will come standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available as an option as it is on the current Regal. A small OPC badge visible on the pictured sedanís front fender suggests that this is a high-performance version with a bit more power and some chassis upgrades, which could perhaps make it to our shores as the Regal GS.

Why It Matters: Besides offering station-wagon enthusiasts a new model on which to focus their desires, the new long-roof offering will help Buick cultivate the Regalís Eurocentric premium image. Other offerings in this segment come from Audi, BMW, and Volvo with the A4 Allroad, 3-series Sport Wagon, and V60. Buick could find a niche if its wagon is priced right. The current Regal sedan is poised as a sort of budget Audi A4 alternative, and that positioning should continue into its next generation, even if pricing increases a bit to correspond with the new modelís more upscale styling and presumably nicer interior.

Platform: A version of GMís Epsilon architecture, likely the E2XX platform thatís found under the new Chevrolet Malibu. As such, interior room should increase compared with the current Regal, which uses an older version of the front-drive-based Epsilon II platform.
Powertrain: A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mated with GMís new nine-speed automatic transmission, similar to the unit in the 2017 Malibu, where it makes 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Expect GM to scrap the current Regalís base engine, a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder, although a smaller-displacement turbocharged four-cylinder such as the Malibuís 1.5-liter unit is a possibility on lower trim levels. The Regal GS may use a higher-output version of the same 2.0-liter turbo, possibly with upwards of 300 horsepower. We donít know if the six-speed manual offered in the current Regal GS will stick around, but we certainly hope it does.
VIEW PHOTOS

Estimated Arrival and Price: With the Opel Insignia in these photos looking nearly production-ready, it may make its debut as soon as the Geneva auto show in spring 2017. That means the Regal wonít be far behind, so look for a mid-2017 debut with the car going on sale by the end of next year. Its base price will likely approach $30,000 or even surpass it, given that the current Regalís relatively spartan base trim starts at $27,990 and the 2.0-liter turbocharged model starts at $29,540.

Just a fact, although I wish it wasn't.

Sucks that I'll likely never be able to realize my dream of owning a m6 ctsv wagon because the resale is crazy high for them.

I Am Decades From Retirement Yet Suddenly Interested In Buick

Word has it Buick is about to take an earnest pass at rebuilding its brand with an all-new Regal sedan set to bow in the near future. Everyone seems to think it will be a version of the newly revealed Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport, and I canít think of a better way to make Buick awesome again.

The sedan, which will be sold by GM as the Opel and Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport in Europe and Holden Commodore in Australia, is a completely new car set to feature an eight-speed automatic, advanced AWD system with clutch-powered torque vectoring (conceptually similar to what we tried in the Porsche Macan) and one hell of a beautiful body.

The Insignia/Commodore looks like confluence of the Audi A7 and Volvo S90 with a bit of Mazda6 in the equation. Consider me titillated.

The Vauxhall press release says its version of the car will bow in earnest at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March, where the company will show off more details but it sounds particularly proud of the carís headlights, heads-up display and seats.

Holdenís Commodore press release got into a little more detail about its version of the vehicle, which will get a nine-speed automatic, AWD again and both a small diesel and V6 gas engine options along with a high-performance adaptive suspension system.

Iím quite taken with the design in these images, and I think Buick would have a good shot at riding this sexy shape back to relevance in the U.S. luxury car market. Iím not even that old yet.

2017 Opel Insignia Grand Sport revealed

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

Video URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDi_QS0r_PM

On Tuesday we saw Holden unveil its redesigned Commodore. Today we have our first look at Opelís version of the car, the Insignia Grand Sport.
Apart from their badgesóand whether the steering wheel is on the left or rightóthe two cars are virtually identical, although thereís likely to be some differences in the specifications for markets each brand operates in.
Eventually, a third version of the car will be revealed as the 2018 Buick Regal. It will be slightly different as it will feature a more conventional notchback sedan shape instead of the fastback look featured on the Insignia Grand Sport and Commodore. A wagon is also in the works and weíve heard that it might just make it into Buick showrooms.
2017 Opel Insignia (top) and 2018 Buick Regal spy shots - Image via S. Baldauf/SB-Medien

Underpinning the cars is General Motors Companyís [NYSE:GM] lightweight E2XX platform that debuted in the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. For the Insignia Grand Sport, the platform allowed the engineers to shave off as much as 385 pounds compared to the outgoing model. At the same time, the track has been widened by 0.43 inches and the wheelbase stretched by 3.6 in. The roof has also been lowered by 1.1 in, and the seating position by the same amount, helping to achieve a sportier, more connected feel from behind the wheel.
Drive is to the front wheels only in standard guise but all-wheel drive will be available. The new system features a pair of electronically-controlled clutch packs on either side of the rear drive unit. This means drive torque can be split between the axles as well as between the rear wheels. A similar setup features in the 2016 Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] Focus RS.
To further aid the handling, thereís a new chassis system called FlexRide that integrates adjustment of the suspension dampers, steering and throttle. Via a driving modes selector, the driver can switch between Standard, Tour and Sport modes. The latter is customizable and can learn to mimic an individual style of driving.
2017 Opel Insignia Grand Sport

No details on the powertrains have been released but expect a series of inline-4 units, in both diesel and gasoline flavors. A turbocharged V-6 should eventually appear, perhaps reserved for a high-performance OPC model. The previous Insignia OPC had a twin-turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 good for 325 horsepower and 321 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed manual should be standard while available transmissions should include an 8-speed automatic initially and eventually GMís new 9-speeder.
The final element worth mentioning is the carís matrix LED headlights. These rely on multiple LED units, 32 in the case of the Insignia Grand Sport, to control the light path to help improve nighttime visibility. They can provide a spotlight when necessary and automatically switch between low- and high-beam modes, relying on a forward-facing camera to detect other road users so that they arenít blinded. Unfortunately, the last factor rules them out for sale in the United States since regulations here require separate, driver-controllable low- and high-beam modes.
Sales of the Opel Insignia Grand Sport will commence shortly after the carís world debut next March at the 2017 Geneva auto show.

GM-owned Vauxhall introduces 2017 Insignia Grand Sport

Vauxhall, General Motors' British division, has unveiled a new sedan named Insignia Grand Sport.

Engineers started from scratch. Built on a new platform, the Insignia Grand Sport is up to 400 pounds lighter than its predecessor. It's slightly lower and wider, and designers have made both overhangs much shorter in order to give it sportier proportions. The new design helps it achieve a drag coefficient of 0.26.

The Insignia's front end is vaguely inspired by the Monza concept that sister company Opel presented at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. The look is characterized by sharp headlights with boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, and a grille that's lower and wider than before.

The cabin boasts a high-resolution touch screen that runs a brand new infotainment system compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The list of available premium features includes a heated windshield, heated rear seats, and a heads-up display. The seats in the Insignia are certified by Germany's Aktion Gesunder RŁcken (Campaign for Healthy Backs).

We'll have to wait until the Insignia is presented to the public to find out exactly what's under the hood. However, we expect the sedan to be offered with an array of turbocharged gasoline- and diesel-powered engines. Front-wheel drive and a manual transmission will come standard, and buyers will be able to pay extra for all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, or both. A torque-vectoring system will also be offered.

The 2017 Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport will greet the public for the first time during next year's Geneva Auto Show, and it will go on sale in the U.K. shortly after. The Opel-badged Insignia Grand Sport that will be sold in continental Europe will debut at the same event.

The Insignia gives is a glimpse at the next-generation Buick Regal that will most likely debut during next year's edition of the New York Show, and rumors indicate we'll get the station wagon variant of it, too. Finally, a market-specific version of it will replace the rear-wheel drive Holden Commodore (sold as the Chevrolet SS in the United States) in Australia.

This looks too much like a Malibu. The Previous gen Regal GS looked WAY BETTER.

Opel Insignia Sports Tourer Officially Stretches Its Roof From Geneva To Markets Worldwide

Wagons may be a dying breed in America, replaced (alongside the minivan) by the ubiquitous crossover. But the state of the estate is still alive and kicking in many overseas markets that even an American automaker like General Motors can't ignore. Hence the new Insignia Sports Tourer.

Based closely on the recently revealed Insignia Grand Sport sedan, the new Sports Tourer is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month to replace the outgoing model that won Europe's Car of the Year award back in 2009.

So what we're looking at, essentially, is the same fresh architecture and Monza-inspired design, but with a stretched roofline to offer more utility. More than 100 liters (3.5 cubic feet) more utility, in fact, as cargo capacity has grown to 1,640 liters (68 cubic feet) thanks to a load floor that's nearly four inches longer.

That means the new Insignia Sports Tourer is larger than the model it replaces, but thanks to lightweight construction materials and more efficient packaging, it's a good 200 kilograms (440 pounds) lighter than the model it replaces.

Naturally it also benefits from all the advancements rolled out on the Grand Sport sedan, including the intelligent, torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system and adaptive suspension. Full technical specifications have yet to be revealed, but GM says that it ďwill be available with a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines along with latest generation transmissions, including the new eight-speed automatic gearbox.Ē

The vehicle you see here will be sold as an Opel across Europe and in many other markets around the world, and as a Vauxhall in the UK. The Australian version has been revealed simultaneously as the new NG-generation Holden Commodore Sportwagon, for which initial specs have been confirmed to encompass four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines and a range-topping V6 model delivering 308 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Word has it that GM could even bring this wagon version Stateside (and likely to China) to sell alongside the Buick Regal sedan and possible liftback variant as well. Whether it's wearing a lightning bolt, griffin, lion, or triple-shield badge on the snout, though, what you see is essentially what you'll be getting at dealers around the world wherever the long arm of The General reaches.

The Next Buick Regal Might Be A Hatchback Or Wagon: Report

The next generation Buick Regal is shaping up to be one sleek luxury car from General Motorsí entry-luxury brand. Now turns out the American Regal might not be a sedan at all, but rather only offered in Sportback or wagon variants. Hooray for superior body styles!

Of course, this announcement did not come from Buick because like all automakers they ďdo not comment on future product plans,Ē but Automotive Newsis usually pretty on point, citing two prominent auto forecast firms who expect that Buick will reserve the Regal sedan for the Chinese market onlyóand give America a wagon and a five-door hatchback.

While having Buick abandon the Regal sedan in America may sound extreme, the reasoning behind it is sound. The sedan market has been rapidly declining for some time, with most buyers shifting to crossovers. Also, the current Buick Regal sedan wasnít terribly successful at poaching buyers from the Germans, despite its European roots. Therefore going in a different direction could be the ticket into getting younger buyers into Buicks.
Since four-door coupes such as the Audi A5 Sportback, BMW 4 Series GranCoupe and upcoming Volkswagen Arteon are all the rage now, you canít be a legit luxury car brand unless you offer some kind of liftback sedan. It is speculated that the Regal five-door will be a rebadged version of the Opel Insignia Grand Sport hatchback that was recently showcased in Geneva.

Of course, what we are really excited about is the speculated return of a Buick wagon on our shores which has been absent for 20 years. The new Buick Regal wagon should be based on the Insignia Sports Tourer seen in various global markets.

My worry is that with the possibility of a wagon-like Regal Sportback, Buick wonít offer us a traditional Regal wagon but rather a lifted and cladded version similar to an Audi Allroad or Subaru Outback.
The next Buick Regal is set to make its global debut on April 4 at GMís Warren Technical Center in suburban Detroit, with an appearance at the New York International Auto Show soon after. We welcome our new Buick wagon-hatch overlords.
