Default Ford Ranger Mid-Size Pickup May Return To U.S. In 2018

2015 Ford Ranger for global markets

Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] fans in the United States have missed out on the latest Ranger but that may eventually change if a new report proves accurate. The mid-size pickup made its debut in 2009 during the height of the global financial crisis, thus the decision was made not to offer it locally in order to allow Ford to maximize sales of its larger, more profitable F-150.
The Detroit News reports that Ford is now looking to bring the Ranger back to the U.S. and may even start production at a plant in Michigan. Ford’s plant in Rayong, Thailand is currently the main hub for Ranger production.

Ford is said to be in talks with the United Auto Workers over plans to start Ranger production at its plant in Wayne, Michigan. The plant is currently responsible for the Focus and C-Max, though Ford has confirmed it is moving production of the compact models to a new plant in 2018, most likely in Mexico where wage costs are lower.

The talks are said to be at a late stage, and an agreement between union officials and Ford’s board of directors will need to be reached. Mid-size truck sales have been on a decline for the past decade but recent entries like the new Chevrolet Colorado and its GMC Canyon corporate cousin have seen a slight uptick in the segment’s share of the overall market.

Of interest to performance fans are recent trademark filings for the “Ranger Raptor” and “Ranger FX4” names, suggesting that an off-road, performance-oriented version of the Ranger is in the works, something along the lines of the F-150 Raptor or original Ranger FX4.

looks good in the pictures and would be a decent seller.

Problem now is, Toyota has a new redesigned tacoma.
Colorado/Canyon are selling great right now and by 2018 i would figure they would have only improved with the diesel etc.

Frontier might be better...who knows. titan? who knows

I love how the union has say in this. Ford has a HUGE uphill battle now that the new Tacoma is out. That thing will dominate the market, just like the current model does......that's been out forever no less. LOL

ford is using this to make the union sign a friendly contract.

They are moving all the car production from that michigan plant to mexico and other places. they are talking about producing the ranger and highly doubtful producing the bronco there.

Problem is even if they make 100k rangers a year it is maybe 1/3rd of what is made there now (focus, c-max, etc).

Not really. There are plenty of Ford fans just waiting for FORD to release the ranger again, dude. Same thing with GM guys who would never even CONSIDER an import mid-sized truck. They were chomping at the bit for the Colorado.

Brand loyalists are still out there, especially in the truck market. There is a big world outside of Joco, man.

Ford Ranger and Bronco rumors swirl yet again

As expected, buried deep inside the many pages of Ford's proposed new contract with the UAW are discussions on what's going to happen at the Michigan Assembly Plant after production of the C-Max and Focus are moved to Mexico after 2018. Not surprisingly, coinciding with that news, two nameplates that have long resonated with traditional Ford buyers are once again circulating the rumor mill: Bronco and Ranger.

It's important to note that none of this information has yet been confirmed by Ford, and, when contacted, Ford Truck Communications Manager Mike Levine told us that – you guessed it – "Ford does not comment on speculation or future product plans." But that's certainly not going to stop anybody else from speculating. According to The Detroit Free Press, which quotes the always nebulous "person briefed on the agreement who was not authorized to speak publicly," the Ranger is headed for production by 2020 in Michigan, followed shortly thereafter by a new Bronco. That timing makes sense – assuming the Focus and C-Max move out in 2018, it would take some time to switch gears at the plant from making compact cars to midsize pickup trucks and SUVs.

While a new Bronco and US availability of the Ranger will surely be welcome news to small truck and 'ute fans, perhaps less welcome to the rank-and-file at Ford are future production plans that don't include many next-gen cars (as opposed to trucks, crossovers and SUVs) built in America. In addition to the aforementioned compact cars, there's no sign of the Ford Fusion or Taurus in any of Ford's as-yet confirmed production plans, according to Automotive News. If those models are produced outside US borders, that would leave the Mustang and Lincoln Continental as the only cars Ford produces in the States. We'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

America's 2019 Ford Ranger Won't Look Like The 'New One' You've Seen

Today we’re all going nuts over news that the 2019 Ford Ranger pickup truck is coming (back) to the U.S. market. But for the rest of the world the truck never went away, so it’s significant that Ford has stated the American version will get its own “front styling, engines and features.”

That means the truck will not look like the 2016 model currently sold in over 100 countries around the world. It also means the next international version of the truck will not indicate the American model’s styling. At least, not completely.
Relatedly, I think we can expect this statement to apply to the Everest SUV, which may or may not be what the 2020 Bronco ends up being based off. If the Bronco does become a U.S.-market version of the Everest, it will probably not look like the SUV that’s currently on sale internationally.
Quote:

Mike Levine @mrlevine
The all-new Ford Ranger will be tailored to the needs of North American customers with unique front styling, engines and features.
10:26 AM - 9 Jan 2017
Mike Levine, Ford’s former truck communications chief recently promoted to Product Communications Manager, has actually tweeted two significant statements about the Ranger here.

The first is the phrase “all-new,” which in auto industry speak means “completely redesigned.” For example the F-150 was “all-new” for 2015 when it underwent dramatic interior and exterior design changes, but it is only “revised” for 2018 with its upgraded engines and an aesthetically tweaked front end.
That makes me think all the specs we know about the current global-market Ford Ranger, aka “T6,” might not translate as viable speculation on what the U.S. market truck will be like. Though we are hearing that Ford considers “all-new” (in the context of Levine’s tweet) to simply mean “all new to the U.S.,” the truck is going to be changed before coming here.

And of course “unique front styling, engines and features” means when the truck does come out, the American model will have its own look.
I’m going to guess the main differentiator in engines will be a very small diesel option in the truck’s economy-spec abroad, where emissions regulations are different and low operating cost is a priority for customers. “Unique features” for the U.S. will probably be driver aids like blind-spot warnings and pre-collision braking. And extra cupholders, right?

It makes sense that the Ranger will be dramatically revised before returning to the American market though. Its current T6 platform has been selling without major changes since 2011. Even though the truck got a handsome facelift about 18 months ago, the body style will be pretty old by the time 2019 comes around.

2019 Ford Ranger spied testing right here in America

Don't be surprised if it looks more like a mini F-150 by the time it's in production.

2011 Ranger
MSRP $18,160

The latest rumors about the upcoming Ford Bronco, particularly about a possible solid front axle made by Dana, has gotten us pretty excited about the Jeep Wrangler competitor. But let's not forget about the Ford Ranger, due to be unveiled sometime next year as a 2019 model. Our spy photographer spotted this one in Dearborn, Michigan, driving around with a camouflaged wrapping but lacking the heavy curtain-style coverings you see on vehicles where the manufacturer wants to keep the major styling elements hidden.

That means one of two things. Either this is representative of what our American Ranger will look like – largely similar to the pickup sold in other parts of the world – or that sheetmetal is just being used temporarily to hide the American-market components being tested underneath, and our Ranger will get unique styling. Either is a plausible explanation, but the rest-of-world bodywork might be too understated for American consumers. Maybe Ford will split the difference, and give the Ranger a scaled-down version of the F-150's front and rear ends, while keeping the side stampings largely the same. It's definitely too early to tell, but don't be surprised if our 2019 Ranger at a minimum adopts C-shaped headlights and a three-bar grille.

There's no solid information yet about powertrains, but the smart money is on nothing larger than a V6 finding a home
under the hood. Abroad, the Ranger is available with a range of diesel engines, but there are only two probable candidates for our market. One is the 3.0-liter Lion unit that's heading into the F-150 for 2018. It's also available in US-market Land Rovers, where it makes around 254 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. That seems like a lot for a midsize pickup, but it could be detuned. The other is the 3.2-liter diesel inline-five that Ford sells here in the Transit van, which is available in the Ranger in some markets – it's good for 185 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, definitely fits, and closely matches the Chevy Colorado's 2.8-liter Duramax's 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. And an EcoBoost inline-four as a base engine is also likely.

Whatever engines find their way underhood, we're expecting the new Ford-GM 10-speed automatic to show up. We're keeping our ear to the pavement on the Ranger and Bronco, so if we can shake any more info loose we'll pass it along.

I wouldn't be upset with a mini f150. I think they're decent looking trucks... just fucking huge (like all fullsize trucks have gotten). A smaller one would be like an f150 circa 2003, which was a good size, IMO.

The front styling doesn't look like it's going to change much...which is too bad because that truck is kinda fugly.

The main thing will be the price point for this truck. If it's anywhere close to current F150 then might as well get the whole truck.

Are those even selling well? Price point on those alone you could just bump up to the Silverado.

Some people just don't want the larger truck even if they are close in price.

Yep. Having a truck is great; both trucks I've owned were super useful and I am on and off considering buying another. I would never get a full size nowadays though; having a truck that big is so limiting in where you can go and park. Hell, I think the Colorado and Tacoma are too big nowadays.
