Question 06 wrx turbo fail.

Ok, well I was driving the other day, and my turbo started making a god awful noise and I lost all boost. So I know its fried. I bought a cheap turbo off eBay (i know its not smart, I just don't have the money for a proper snail. And need it moving asap) I actually ordered a td06-20g, but they sent me a td05-16g by mistake. I'm not sure if I should return the 05 and the the one I ordered, or just keep it. Also, aside from a cone filter, my car has no mods at all. Iv been searching, and allot of people say I need injectors, fuel pump, and a tune just for the td05. But can I run it at stock boost without any of these (until I can afford them anyway) any help would be great

You should be okay NORMAL driving on stock boost, I wouldn't put my foot into too much though, WOT would be a big no-no until you get injectors/pump and a tune to be safe.

If I were you though, I would stay well way from ebay turbos, there is a reason they are 500-600$ when a comparable size turbo from a reputable company will run in the 800-1200$ range.

Ok, thanks. And I know, I really didn't want to go that route, but like I said, I just don't have the cash for a good one rite now, and I need my car to get to work. Aside from the shitty turbo, size wise, do you think I should get the td06-20g I ordered, or stick with the td05-16g I got. Price wasn't that much different.

So...you don't have a tune or access to tune it, yet bought a non OEM turbo?

Well...that...isn't smart.

Haha, yea... I know. But I'm kinda desperate, and oem is out of my price range at the moment

Also common mistake people who are "newer" to forced induction think that boost/ PSI is everything, it is not the case as the CFM plays a big role too.

My car VF39 stock turbo makes 308whp and 350ft/lbs of torque at 22psi

Lets say you take a car identical to mine and added a bigger turbo/ supporting mods/tune but you are still are making that 22psi of boost.
Difference is that bigger turbo is moving a shitload more air, just under the same pressure psi.

Im not sure how comfortable I would be driving your car with a questionable aftermarket turbo w/o tune if I didn't have a way at least view AFRs

Do you have another way of transportation ?? I would save and wait. My guess is that ebay turbo is going to end up costing you alot more time, money and headaches to even come close to the amount your saving.

Yea, I understand that, and yes, I am noobie(ish) to turbos, iv had a few over the years, but math is not my strong point, so no matter how much iv tried to learn about different turbo sizes, I just can't understand compressor maps and engine compatibility.

Not really. My jeep still runs, but the wife needs it for work, until I can fix her explorer anyway

I suck at math too, which is why when I looked into learning how to tune cars, I was like "fuck that noise".

Post your situation, Im sure you will get some solid advice and possibly even a hand or two to help with the wrenching.
Im not sure if they are still doing it but I remember Jeff (WRXNFX- probably one of the nicest people I have met) was doing some romraider tuning deal.
Im sure someone on there has a way to basically keep your car from going BOOM.

Ebay turbo on the other hand, I cant imagine it will be spooling very long.

Thank you. Ill check it out. And I don't figure it will last very long either. Just hopefully long enough that I can save up enough fir a good one. Any idea how much a "tune" would run me roughly?

From a shop most charge about $500 for a dynotune. Other individuals/ romraider/street tune I haven't a clue

Neither did I until one day I saw a guy selling his Perrin 35r kit on there, too bad I didn't have a spare 7 grand laying around.

I see a lot of people trying to go the cheaper route, in the long run it ends up costing a lot more.

How much did you spend?? There are several TD04s right now on craigslist all like <$150 ,I believe that is still the same turbo used on the 06's.
