No, that's not what the Supra's competitors 11 years ago were. It's competitors were the RX-7's, Corvette, GTR, M3, and AMG cars. Not mustangs and z cars.

If they are going to name something the Supra, it had better be up to take on the GTR in terms of performance, because the bar was set so high in the 90's.

11 years ago the Supra didn't sell in volume and was discontinued, Toyota also had the Celica and MR2...

Currently Toyota (not including Scion) has no sports cars and is pretty bland. If the could price the new Supra around $40k with 400hp I could see it selling very well. If the want to do a higher hp Lexus version as an SC type car and up the price cool...

fwiw Toyota does have a sports car (it's branded as a SCION in the US only) sold as the GT 86 in Europe

That's why I included the portion about not including Scion. Toyota proper has no US sports car, and the Scion while fun is more on par with a Miata I.e. Low horsepower handling machine.

If they want to have a marquee sports car, then they need to keep up with the times and the market. 400hp doesn't cut it anymore for that segment and they are more than capable of making something epic.

I agree that 400hp doesn't cut it NA, if it were TT I think most everyone would read between the lines.

lol no way. Vettes come with 460hp, M3's 414hp, and GTR's 545hp.

My point is that if it is named the Supra, it should be a supercar killer, like it was when it was in the 90's.

If it is not named "Supra", then what you're saying is acceptable for me, but not for the Supra namesake.

Performance wise I think it would be hard for a RWD car to really out compete a GTR. I am not sure on this but weren't the 90s supra TT's 330 hp?
I agree that they need to shoot for over 450hp at least!. However, I also think they need to stick to a tuner friendly platform, forged internals, RWD/turbo front engine setup, good brakes etc etc.
Even if the asking price was 80+, due to the legacy of the car, it would sell if done right.

That's correct the 94 was 330 HP and the legacy of the name is why they haven't just rushed a new one to market.

Modified Lexus RC300h/350 chassis and upgraded ISF 5.0 V8. Price it at $45-55K. Done.

The Supra doesn't need to be giant killer. That wasn't it's point back in the 1980s. It was a cheaper GT car for the masses. That's what they need to go back to. It's silly to try and compete with the GTR.

Please explain to me why they stopped making the Supra for NA. It's been gone 11 years, most people only recognize it as he car from The Fast and the Furious, it can really be whatever Toyota wants to market it as...

Since you own a Supra tell me about how well they respond to minor bolts sand how quickly relatively low hp number jumps up to numbers respectable by today's standards.

If you want it to cost GTR money and most likely have the same fate it did last time that's fine, but I'd love to see it have longevity.

What "super cars" did the MKIV TT (stock for stock) kill? I remember reading the compares in motor trend back in the day, and performance-wise, it wasn't up to par with cars such as the gts and 911tt.

Currently Toyota (not including Scion) has no sports cars - See more at: http://kcsr.org/showthread.php?t=122....GN1y7HK5.dpuf

What you havent watched the new Camry commercials? They turned it into a sport sedan.

But I agree Toyota could use a sports car. If not Supra then what should they call it?

Another thing about the 90's supra's that I have always loved was the interior, dash/console layout. It is honestly one of my all time favorites of the car world. It wraps around the driver like a glove, if they do make a new "supra" I hope it is similar in layout.

The only driving position I liked more than the Supra is the S2000 (although a bit small) It's all geared toward the driver and driving experience, I love it.

Exactly, you almost feel "centered" in the car, I just love the dished angle of the dash and how it sweeps down, and seamlessly transfers into the center console.
I have sat in a few supra's drivers seats, but never have sat shotgun or driver in a s2000 so IDK.

Still think the mid 90s supra interior is my favorite layout ever. I am not sure what it is, it just seems right.

Toyota Mirai sports car concept headed to Detroit, could preview the Supra - report

Name is Japanese for 'the future'

According to a recent report, Toyota will introduce the Mirai sports car concept at the North American International Auto Show.
Details are limited but speculation suggests this could be the long-rumored Supra concept. Nothing is official but "well-placed members of the Toyota team" previously told Autoblog the company will use the Detroit Auto Show to introduce a new concept that previews the upcoming Supra.
Toyota has been tight-lipped about the concept but it is interesting to note that Mirai is Japanese for "the future." This could imply it previews a production model or has technology that will be used in an upcoming vehicle.
Toyota's press conference is scheduled for January 13th, so expect to learn more details shortly.

Agreed. Flat black main panels, angled correctly, purposeful, no fluff, no crap, simple tech. Automakers, and buyers, have lost site of this.

Toyota FT-1 Concept: Supra Successor Hinted At Detroit Show

HI-RES GALLERY: Toyota FT-1 concept, 2014 Detroit Auto Show

Car enthusiasts have been clamoring for a replacement for Toyota's iconic Supra for years now, and the Toyota FT-1 concept unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show is our best look yet at just such a car. The work of America's own Calty Design Research, the FT-1 steps away from Toyota's more eco-friendly concepts of late and delivers something truly exciting--a powerful, agile sports car with sensuous curves and a focused interior layout. Gearhead Toyota boss Akio Toyoda gave designers a simple but important motive before they set to work on the car: Make it cool. Calty has a long and illustrious history of producing interesting designs--it's previously worked on the original 1978 Celica, the Lexus SC400, the Supra and the FT-HS concept--and the FT-1 concept is no different. The profile is long and low, the low nose leads into an extended hood, and the concept features powerful rear haunches for the traditional sports car stance. One of the designers' main goals was to create a form that looked sculpted by the wind and by speed, at once remaining functional--hence the large air intakes either side of the extended nose, and the deep side intakes aft of the doors.
While hard to tell from some angles, that black area on the hood isn't just paint, either. Like on many supercars, the FT-1 features a glass panel to allow a glimpse at the internal combustion engine below. There are large alloy wheels, a deep front spoiler and a pronounced kick to the rear end, not dissimilar from the aggressive, cab-back shape of American sports cars like the Corvette and Viper. For the car's glasshouse, there's more than a passing nod to one of Toyota's most celebrated models--the stunning 2000GT.
Inside there's functional minimalism. Light weight is the order of the day, with padding only where it's needed and a 'slingshot' cockpit design, where all the controls are tightly packed around the driver's position. There's a jet fighter-style head up display above the steering wheel and most of the minor switchgear is located on the wheel itself, letting the driver keep their hands on the wheel. If this is beginning to sound like a video game, then you aren't far off--Toyota and Calty have collaborated with the creators of the Gran Turismo game series, and the FT-1 is soon to feature in the latest installment, Gran Turismo 6.
Toyota says the car is symbolic of a new chapter in Toyota's design standards, boss Toyoda adding that the company now aims to create cars that people want--cars they simply have to drive. If that means a new Supra to join the smaller GT 86 in Toyota's lineup, that's okay by us.

Pretty hot car. There is something about the front that looks off to me....It maybe that little F1 style nose it has.
