Default Fisker : Death and Re-Birth

Who wants to wait until the official unveiling of the Fisker Nina plug-in hybrid next week when we can see spy shots right this second? Neither do we.

So, what do the shots reveal? For starters, we can see that the Nina is indeed shorter than its Karma big brother. This is expected, but the impression we have is that the Karma's design language translates quite well into a vehicle about the size of a BMW 5 Series. The front end, too, sports a moustache-like grille that's similar to the one on the Karma. On the back side, the "EVer" badge is still proudly in place, but the non-functional diamond-shaped exhaust outlets are missing. The four-door sedan's rear doors have the handles hidden smoothly between the window and the C-pillar. Then there are the wheels. It's hard to miss those. If you want to compare the Nina with the Karma directly, open the gallery above as well as this gallery in another tab and click away.

The problem with these images is that they still don't tell us much about the car itself. We've heard the cost for the Nina, which is supposed to be powered by a BMW four-cylinder engine, will be about the same as a top-of-the-line BMW 3 Series. That implies something north of $45,000, despite what Vice President Joe Biden said back in October of 2009: "It looks like a four-door Ferrari, I can't believe it's only going to be $40,000." We'll hopefully know more when we get to the New York Auto Show next week.

After all the problems Fisker has had with the Karma launch and the DOE loan, it's important to remember that it's the vehicle you see above that the DOE has been helping with all along. Do you like where your tax dollars have gone?

Fisker Atlantic images get leaked ahead of New York debut

Gallery - 2 images

We will now take a break from some April Fools Day news (we’re really hoping you can figure out which articles are a prank and which are real), to bring you some serious breaking news.
The first two images of the Fisker Atlantic, a model being built under the company’s Project Nina line, have been leaked via Czech site Autoforum. The Fisker Atlantic will be the first model (out of the three) under the Nina umbrella and will debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show next week.
Check out more news on the 2012 New York Auto Show.
We have no official details on the technical specs of the Atlantic, however, we do know that it will be the first model to use BMW’s 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turboengine. In Sept. 2011, Fisker and BMW agreed on a deal where BMW will supply Fisker with up to 100,000 4-cylinder, turbocharged gasoline engines. The engine will of course be hooked up to an electric-motor, making the Atlantic a plug-in hybrid sedan.
So far, reports suggest that Fisker is looking to offer the Atlantic as an affordable plug-in hybrid unlike its $100,000+ Karma sedan. The Fisker Atlantic should hit markets by next year.

I drove a Karma and it was interesting to say the least. It just felt like an upscale Prius.

Fisker Atlantic prototype unveiled, crucial model to take brand from start-up to mainstream

Gallery - 9 images

Fisker Automotive, which has been receiving a handful of bad publicity over its plug-in hybrid Karma sedan, will try to repair its image at the 2012 New York Auto Show with the new Fisker Atlantic sedan. The model, which is comparable in size to the Audi A5, is the latest model in Fisker’s expanding range of plug-in hybrids.
Fisker says that the Atlantic is aimed “at young families who want to drive an impactful, high-end vehicle while making a positive statement about responsibilities – both in terms of their commitment to sustainability and the practicalities of everyday life.” The Atlantic is expected to be priced quite below the $100,000+ Karma.
The Fisker Atlantic uses the latest second-generation Fisker EVer (Electric Vehicle with extended range) technology. The electric-motor of the Fisker Atlantic is mated to a 4-cylinder gasoline engine (previously reported to be a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo from BMW). We have no details on the efficiency of the car, but Fisker says that the model will offer a ‘highly competitive performance for a car in its class.’
The Fisker Karma will come standard with a rear-wheel-drive configuration and all-wheel-drive will be offered as an option.

“We are exceptionally proud of the Atlantic design prototype, and believe we have created another groundbreaking car that looks and will drive like nothing else on the road in this class,” said Henrik Fisker, co-founder, Executive Chairman, and Design Director of Fisker Automotive.
“Fisker Automotive is transitioning from a start-up automaker to a fully-fledged mainstream car manufacturer and the Atlantic is a crucial milestone in that process,” said Tom LaSorda, CEO Fisker Automotive. “We have a long way to go, but in the near future Fisker intends to deliver this exceptional American-designed, engineered, and manufactured vehicle to showrooms worldwide.” I’m confident the Fisker Atlantic will inspire people and win the brand many new customers who may not have considered an EVer powered vehicle like this before.”

Leaked documents show Fisker Atlantic will debut in 2014, gets 300-hp

Gallery - 9 images

When the Fisker Atlantic sedan made its debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show, the idea of an affordable plug-in hybrid sedan gave some boost to Fisker’s image that was being beaten by issues it was having with the launch of the expensive Karma.
Check out our original post on the Fisker Atlantic.
If your one of the few looking forward to seeing the Fisker Atlantic go on sale, you may have to wait just a little longer. Recent reports suggest that the model won’t go on sale until mid-2014. While Fisker never officially said when the Atlantic will go on sale, reports suggest that the model would hit our roads as early as next year.
Any word on the specs? When Fisker officially unveiled the Atlantic prototype/concept around the 2012 New York Auto Show it said that the model features the company’s second-generation Fisker EVer (Electric Vehicle with extended range). The setup consists of an electric-motor and a 4-cylinder gasoline engine, reported to be a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo from BMW.
New details based on leaked investor documents show that the Atlantic will make a total of 300-hp, allowing it to go form 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Emissions come in at 50 kilograms per kilometer.

The Fisker Atlantic will come standard with ear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive will be offered as an option.
The leaked document also shows some price range, which comes in at $50,000 – $60,000.

I've drove a couple Karma's now.... Still on the fence whether I like it or not. I HATE the mustache grill, and fake diamond shaped exhaust. I can deal with everything else but I still don't see these cars catching on, they seem like a trendy move. I also wouldn't buy one considering the Govt. runs Fisker.

Fisker CEO: We are looking for strategic partners, building foundation in China and Middle East

Fisker’s CEO Tony Posawatz says that the plug-in hybrid automaker has a lot of work to do and is currently seeking discussions with strategic partners.
Posawatz said that he is also looking into starting a leasing program.

Fisker is looking into improving its relationship with its dealers as well, which consists of 48 stores in North America. Founder Henrik Fisker will be going on a 10-dealer tour in the next few days to give tours of the Karma and build customers.
Posawatz said that Fisker is looking to start a foundation in the Middle East this month and in China in early 2013.
“We think we’re positioned pretty nicely, but like any company in its infancy, we still have so much more foundational work to do. The dealer and retail network is a classic example,” he said.

Execs From China’s BAIC Visit Fisker Headquarters, Eye Atlantic Sedan: Report

Fisker Atlantic Design Prototype - 2012 New York Auto Show

HI-RES GALLERY: Fisker Atlantic Design Prototype - 2012 New York Auto Show

Despite it being close to a year since Fisker last made a car, the company is yet to announce bankruptcy and remains confident a new investor or even a potential buyer can be found. One hope for Fisker could come in the form of China’s Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC), the company that previously bought the rights to manufacture previous-generation Saabs. China Daily is reporting that a delegation from BAIC visited Fisker’s headquarters in the U.S. over the weekend and have expressed interest in Fisker’s Atlantic mid-size sedan, the second model planned for launch by the electric car startup.
BAIC, like many of China’s automakers, is in a race to develop electric cars in order to meet the country’s impending green car regulations. By acquiring Fisker’s assets, BAIC could have electric car technology in its hands overnight, thus avoiding the extensive cost of developing it from scratch.
BAIC is reportedly keen to launch new electric cars by 2015.
Of course, a number of other parties are also reported to be eyeing the assets of Fisker. One is led by auto industry veteran Bob Lutz and includes China’s Wanxiang Group, which has already acquired bankrupt battery manufacturer A123 Systems, the supplier of the Fisker Karma’s battery. The other is led by Fisker’s own co-founder Henrik Fisker and backed by Hong Kong billionaire Richard Li.
Then there’s the issue of Fisker’s $171 million of outstanding debt to the U.S. government, extended to it in 2009 under the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing program. It means the government still has a say on any potential sale of Fisker.

Fisker bought by an Asian investment group - report

2012 Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid - 22.3.2011

Winning firm led by the son of Asia's richest man

According to a recent report, the U.S. Department of Energy has decided to sell Fisker to Asia's Pacific Century Group.
Details are limited but Reuters says the Pacific Century Group - which is led by Richard Li - won Friday's auction and is now hammering out the final details to complete the sale. There's no word on how much the investment group paid but bidders were reportedly required to make an offer of at least $30 (€21.9) million.
What happens next remains unclear as Fisker has laid off most their staff and hasn't built a car in the past year. However, the terms of the auction stated that the bids must promote U.S. engineering and manufacturing so it's possible that some employees could be recalled to work.

Fisker finally files for bankruptcy as it is bought by a new investment group

2012 Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid - 22.3.2011

Company aims to restart production

After months of uncertainty, Fisker Automotive has filed for bankruptcy and been sold to investment group Hybrid Tech Holdings LLC.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hybrid Tech Holdings will acquire "substantially all" of Fisker's assets for $25 (€18.4) million. This effectively means U.S. taxpayers lost approximately $139 (€102.5) million dollars on the failed automaker.
In a statement, Fisker Automotive Chief Restructuring Officer Marc Beilinson said "After having evaluated and pursued all other alternatives, we believe the sale to Hybrid and the related Chapter 11 process is the best alternative for maximizing Fisker Automotive's value for the benefit of all stakeholders." He added, "We believe that the Fisker Automotive technology and product development capability will remain a guiding force in the evolution of the automotive industry under Hybrid's leadership."

Fisker will not use acquired GM site, says Senator Carper

Fisker will not use acquired GM site, says Senator Carper

Fisker Automotive Holdings Inc. will not use a closed General Motors site it acquired in Delaware even if its new owner resumes output, according to United States Senator Tom Carper. While Fisker is required under an agreement with the US government to build its Karma unit in the US, it will likely produce any future models out of the country, Carper remarked. "I'm a glass-half-full guy, but it's hard to see how this ends up with Fisker building cars in Delaware," he said. Carper was one of Fisker's supporters along with Vice President Joe Biden, a former senator from Delaware. Fisker was granted a $529 million loan in 2009 from the U.S. Energy Department but it got only $192 million after the government cut off the support after it failed to meet production milestones on the $103,000 Karma.

The Atlantic, its second model, was supposed to be produced at the Delaware site under the loan agreement but never saw assembly lines as the carmaker stopped production in 2012 after its battery supplier declared bankruptcy and most of its unsold cars were destroyed in Hurricane Sandy.

Fisker’s assets are now being acquired by, Hybrid Tech Holdings LLC, a group led by Hong Kong tycoon Richard Li. US taxpayers lost $139 million of the $192 million Fisker received after Hybrid Tech agreed to pay the Energy Department $25 million to assume the debt. According to Carper, he is planning to meet with carmakers building in the US at the Detroit auto show in January to attract business and jobs to the GM plan

Wanxiang's last-minute bid for Fisker could restart Karma production, add Atlantic hatchback [UPDATE]

The remains of bankrupt Fisker Automotive are supposed to be sold by the Department of Energy to Hybrid Tech Holdings LLC for $25 million. But, the new year brings a new possibility for the troubled plug-in hybrid automaker and now we hear that Wanxiang America Corp. wants to jump in at the last minute and snatch Fisker up in a 'stalking horse' deal. A hearing is scheduled for tomorrow.

Stalking horse offers are intended to prevent undervalued deals from taking place. Since the DOE is reportedly losing $139 million on its Fisker holdings, it seems like any pressure to increase the $25 million bid would be welcomed. Wanxiang's bid isn't that much different than what Hybrid Tech Holdings was offering, though, since WHYY reports that Wanxiang is offering to pay "$24.7 million and will assume some of Fisker's liabilities."
The big difference is that a Wanxiang purchase could bring Fisker production back to life.
The big difference is that a Wanxiang purchase could bring Fisker production back to life. In court documents, Wanxiang mentions a new Fisker design (a hatchback version of the Atlantic, pictured above) and proposed restarting Karma production at Valmet in Finland, the place where all of the Karmas built to date have been made. At an unspecified future date, production would be moved to VL Automotive's manufacturing facility in Michigan. Wanxiang calls VL a business partner, but you might remember it as the Bob-Lutz-connected company that wants to put small-block Corvette V8 engines into Karma bodies, creating the Destino. Lutz and Wanxiang previously tried to buy Fisker in early 2013. You can find the court documents below, and the concept is on page 11 of the Wanxiang Presentation. On page six you will find mention of a "Karma / Destino production line" and then on page 12 we hear about trucks, cargo vans and SUVs, all of which hints at Wanxiang's big dreams. How big? Wanxiang thinks it could sell 1,000 Karma/Destinos in the first 18 months in the US, along with 500 a year in Europe.

The last stalking horse in the plug-in vehicle industry happened when Coda went under. Before that, Johnson Controls acted as a stalking horse against Wanxiang Group Corp. when Wanxiang bought the remains of A123 Systems. A123 batteries were used in the Fisker Karma powertrain, but the relationship between the two companies was troubled. Perhaps when everything is owned by the same corporate entity, things will run smoother. Wanxiang's documents certainly tell that story.

UPDATE: Fisker asks judge to deny Wanxiang's bid. Also, the hearing was pushed back a week due to the big snowstorm on the east coast.

Wanxiang increases Fisker bid by $10m, hints at Delaware production

just before a judicial hearing tomorrow on the fate of bankrupt Fisker Automotive, one of the two companies fighting over the company's remains, Wanxiang America Corp., said it is willing to increase its submitted bit by a cool $10 million in cash. Wanxiang is ready to bring its total starting bid to $35.7 million and said it is willing to pay 'considerably' more if US bankruptcy judge Kevin Gross approves the sale. Wanxiang says it would pay Fisker's unsecured creditors 50 cents (or more) on each dollar they are owed, while a competing bid from Hybrid Technology LLC would net them less than a penny per dollar. Wanxiang has also said that if it gains control of Fisker, it could restart Karma production in Finland and then wants to build a next-gen model (a hatchback Atlantic, which you can see here) in Michigan alongside the gas-powered version of the Karma, the Destino. Wanxiang is also hinting that it could build future models in Delaware, "if there's enough consumer demand."

Remember, attorneys for Fisker wanted the judge to deny Wanxiang's initial bid altogether and want the plug-in vehicle company to be sold to Hybrid Tech. Last year, Hybrid Tech bought the Department of Energy's failed loan to Fisker for $25 million. The loan was originally valued at $529 million, but Fisker only ever accessed $192 million of that before the DOE got suspicious and stopped funding.
