Default GMC Granite on the way

We’ve heard it before and today we’re hearing it again. GMC has plans to build the Granite Concept crossover to GMC’s lineup as a production model. Pegged to be a step down from the Terrain Crossover, the GMC Granite is said to appeal to buyers with “urban lifestyles” and will compete with the likes of the Scion xB and the Kia Soul.
The concept had a 1.4L four-banger that was turbocharged and had a six-speed manualtransmission. We haven’t heard of any confirmed news in terms of the power and drivetrains, but we can ponder about the possibility of a 2.0L turbo four-banger with the option of a 2.5L naturally aspirated four-pot.
Other details have yet to be release, but as usual, more news about the Granite should come out as time passes by.
Other than that, GMC has plans to add a Denali version of the Terrain in 2012 for the 2013 model year followed by a Terrain eAssist mild hybrid in 2013 for the 2014 model year. A new GMC Yukon is due in 2013 for the 2014 model year followed by a new redesign Acadia for the 2015 model year. The GMC Sierra will be redesigned and reengineered for the 2014 model year in 2013.

GMC Granite is dead

It might have been a worthy successor to the Pontiac Vibe – a stylish, youth-marketed crossover – but alas, the GMC Granite may never come to be. Jim Federico, GM's small car exec, told Automotive News that the Granite concept from the 2010 Detroit auto show isn't headed into production.

Granite was rumored to be green-lighted for production, and would have been based on the Chevrolet Cruze platform, to compete with vehicles like the Scion xB and Kia Soul. We liked the concept when we saw it in 2010, but felt that the Granite was perhaps a bad match for GMC, given its small size.

While AN says Federico offered no further details, we imagine GM figures the forthcoming Buick Encore crossover probably doesn't need the competition in Buick/GMC showrooms.

General Motors’ GMC division is preparing a pint-sized addition to its lineup.

Details on the new model are scarce, but GM North America CEO Mark Reuss has revealed that it will be smaller than the Terrain compact crossover.

Reuss cryptically added that the model will represent an “innovative portfolio entry for GMC” and confirmed that it will chart a more carlike path than the brand’s other offerings.

Although pure speculation at this point, it’s possible that Reuss’ comments could signal that GM has decided to revive plans to produce the GMC Granite concept (pictured above). Unveiled at the 2010 Detroit show, the Granite was similar in size to the Honda Fit and powered by the General’s 138-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder.

Given the success of the Buick Encore, it’s also plausible that GM could be readying a variant to sell in GMC showrooms.

Regardless of what form the new model takes, it should provide a smaller, more efficient counterpoint to GMC’s recent debuts, which include new light- and heavy-duty versions of its Sierra full-size pickup as well as new-generation Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs

GMC considers small SUV to slot below terrain

An executive cautioned that it is not planning a Jeep Wrangler rival, despite years of rumors pointing to such a project.
GMC has hinted at plans to launch a small SUV to slot below the Terrain.

"To me, there is more room for SUVs in the GMC stable," Buick and GMC brand head Duncan Aldred said at a recent media event, as quoted by Automotive News. "An obvious place for GMC to be if it expands is that small SUV segment."
Persistent rumors have pointed to a GMC rival to the next-generation Jeep Wrangler, possibly a body-on-frame model underpinned by the Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado chassis. Designers are said to have gravitated toward a Hummer-like styling.
Aldred downplayed the rumors, admitting that he doesn't think it is "worth trying to take on Wrangler."

General Motors in 2015 revived its trademark for the Granite, previewed in a 2010 concept (pictured) that hints at GMC's take on the Buick Encore and Chevy Traxx.
Aldred is apparently frustrated that GMC doesn't already have a compact crossover, arguing that the premium truck brand "should have been first in the segment."
