Default Genesis G70

Genesis teases New York Concept, could preview 3 Series fighter [video]

Hyundai’s newly established luxury division Genesis has released a teaser for a brand new concept set to be unveiled next week at the 2016 New York Auto Show.
Dubbed the “New York Concept”, the vehicle serves as an indication for the future design language set to be implemented by Genesis. The vehicle is billed as being a “four-door sports sedan” with an “athletic elegance” and most likely it will preview a BMW 3 Series fighter. Such a model has already been confirmed by Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski at last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, so we know for sure it will come sooner or later.
The production version of this NY-bound concept will likely be sold with the “G70” moniker and Genesis has plans to come out with a few derivatives, including a crossover.
Genesis will take the wraps off the New York Concept on March 23 when hopefully the company will announce when the concept will make the transition to a production model.
It will likely be the third model to join the family, following the G90 and G80 which replaced the Hyundai Equus and Genesis, respectively. As a side note, Genesis launched just yesterday a long-wheelbase G90 which is actually longer than the Mercedes-Maybach S Class.

Hyundai's Genesis division show luxury auto concept

Genesis New York Concept challenges BMW 3-Series

They're looking to take on the mighty Mercedes S-Class and BMW's M division with their new Genesis G90 sedan, and now they have revealed their new Genesis New York Concept. This is then paired to an electric motor hybrid system.

Modern luxury lifestyles and products, as well as forms from nature, inspired the appearance of the NY concept, Hyundai says.

While the New York Concept provides only a loose glimpse of what Hyundai has in store for its upcoming G70 midsize sedan, the meticulous attention to detail shows how serious Hyundai's new luxury brand is about tackling established competitors.

The central idea, says Genesis, is to "set a new standard for user experience and function control" with this design, which Genesis designers believe gives a realistic view of future interiors.

The subdued looks may be a bit derivative, but the Genesis concept, with its hybrid powertrain, sits out the horsepower wars running rampant among other luxury brands.

Deeply sculpted body sides, and integrated front guard vents are complemented by integrated door handles, slimline mirrors, and huge alloy wheels, framed at each end by a slim head and tail lights that extend into the bodysides and pick up the main character line. The concept sports a short front overhang and long rear overhang. The outside of the concept is finished in a custom Ceramic Blue color with copper-color inlays in the lower front bumper fascia and sills. An open steering wheel design is said to offer improved visibility of the gauges and better ergonomics. The center console extends throughout the entire cabin resulting in a 2 + 2 seating configuration.

The concept features a leather-wrapped anthracite interior with contrasting tan leather inserts on the seats and doors with suede leather headrests.

The Genesis G70, BMW 3 Series fighter, poses for spy shots

It doesn't look much like the Hybrid Sports Sedan Concept from the New York Auto Show.

During the presentation before driving the new 2017 Genesis G90 in Vancouver a few weeks ago, the US brand honcho for Genesis, Erwin Raphael, talked a bit about the G70. That's what you're seeing in the spy shots above. In that presentation, Raphael referred to the G70 as a near-luxury sedan, but based on the proportions we see in this set of spy photos, it's probably more fair to say it'll be the sportiest Genesis on offer.

A quick refresher: with the addition of the G70, the Genesis brand will have a lineup that is loosely similar to the German competition. The G90 is a big boat, mostly luxury oriented. The G80 (a slightly revamped version of the Hyundai Genesis sedan) is one size smaller, with a bit more sporting character. The G70 should crank the needle further into the sport-touring realm. All three are rear-wheel drive, and it's almost assured that the G70 will also get an all-wheel drive option like the G80 and G90.

The proportions look spot on, but they're not nearly as risky as the Genesis Hybrid Sports Sedan Concept from the New York International Auto Show. That's probably a safe bet considering Genesis's conservative corporate parent company, Hyundai. We can see a short rear deck, a fairly conventional greenhouse, and a long hood covered in thick camouflage – which may hide a power bulge, or else, why cover it up?

A power bulge makes us think of the most intriguing possibility that might rest beneath: Genesis's new twin-turbocharged Lambda 3.3-liter V6, which is right now exclusive to the G90. It's a great motor, with no lag and a rich, fat torque curve. It'd be a hoot in the G80, and a riot in the smaller G70. If we're lucky, the highest-performance G70 will get this engine. It's more likely that the G70 will be offered with a choice of either a 2.0-liter turbo inline-four, or the large and still potent 3.8-liter V6 that's currently found in the G80. It's also a safe bet to assume that Hyundai's internally-developed eight-speed automatic will be the G70's sole transmission.

There's also talk of a hybrid, perhaps resembling the Hybrid Sports Sedan Concept's theoretical 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Whatever form it takes, a hybrid is likely. Also likely is a spring debut on the auto show circuit for the finalized sheetmetal of all versions of the G70. We'll keep you posted.

Genesis G70 spotted with interior picture

The Genesis G70 was found again on the road and its going through more test before its officially shown.

As everyone know the G70 was inspired by the concept model New York Concept shown at the New York Autoshow in 2016 and this concept for sure capture everyone attention at the autoshow. Genesis presented a very futuristic model with a lot of new technology inside but a very refined interior and some aggresive lines outside.

The Genesis brothers, G90 and G80, were models on Hyundai line up and were given a refresh look to be introduced at Genesis Motors compare to the G70 which is a all-new development. Following the Genesis Motors trend, we can expect this model to have rear-wheel drive with the option for all-wheel drive.
At the interior pictures even though we couldnt get the dashboard pictures, we got the rear passenger side of the car and comparing it to the concept we couldnt find any similarities. The design is very modern

We are also expecting the Genesis G70 coupe model, to replace the already the discontinued Genesis Coupe at Hyundai. And with this model we might see the 3.3 twin-turbo engine found at the G90 and the G80 sport.

Genesis G70 Render and Leaked Information

This is what the Genesis G70 will look like, thanks to the guys at Brenthon and additionally we have some leaked details about the upcoming G70.

Genesis cannot afford to get the G70 wrong

The already-crowded compact luxury sport sedan market is about to get even more competitive with the upcoming debut of the Genesis G70. This rendering looks similar to the spy photos we published last year and contains all the signature styling features of the new Genesis brand. We think the production car will be very close to what you see here.
We’ve been hearing about this car, which was originally codenamed RK, since before the Genesis brand was announced. Last year’s New York concept car by Genesis made it official that a 3-Series fighter was almost ready. With all the data Hyundai collected from the Genesis Coupe and two generations of Genesis sedans, it seems likely that the G70 will be a serious contender to capture some compact rear-drive sales.
What We Know About The Genesis G70

Performance

Our sources told us the Genesis G70 will be driven by a choice of a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a standard 6-speed manual transmission and optional 8-speed automatic, a 3.3L V6 with the 8-speed auto standard, and a diesel drivetrain with unknown displacement and around 195 horsepower for select markets. The target acceleration for the 2.0 would be around 5.9 seconds from 0-60mph, while the 3.3 is aiming at a 4.9 second time. We were also told Brembo brakes will be an option on the G70.
Interior

The G70 hopes to outshine its competitors on the inside, and promises to feature real aluminum trim, wireless phone charging, and a Heads-up Display (HUD) to impress drivers and passengers.

Pricing

Even if the G70 can match or outclass its rivals in performance, luxury, or styling, being a Hyundai product, the car will have to appeal on value to generate sales volume. To that end, our sources says the Genesis will be offering G70 buyers a base price of around $32,000 in the United States.
There’s no denying that the G70 is an important car for Genesis. In fact, the success of the brand may hinge on this car providing sales volume. With its combination of high-performing engine choices coupled to the rear-wheel-drive system through two transmission options, its focus on quality and luxury amenities, and its attractive pricing, it seems positioned to sell.
Expect to see the G70 launch soon – our sources said we should be getting the G70 ahead of the Mid-size crossover SUV.

Genesis G70 faster, lighter than Kia Stinger GT

Hyundai's luxury brand Genesis to up the ante with rear-drive twin-turbo V6 scorcher this year

The long-awaited Genesis G70 will be on sale in Australia before the end of the year, and will be offered with a pair of turbocharged petrol engines – four-cylinder and V6.
Although pricing and specification is still not finalised, the all-new G70 will be based on a new rear-drive platform and will compete against vehicles such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

However it’s expected to be more affordable than its German rivals, which start at around $55,000, in line with the larger Genesis sedan currently sold here, which will soon be rebadged G80.
Hyundai Australia says the G70 will be lighter and faster than the Kia Stinger GT too, a vehicle which dispatches the 0-100km/h dash in just 4.9 seconds.
In its highest state of tune, the Korean-built rear-drive luxury sedan is expected to accelerate to 100km/h in around 4.7 seconds, thanks to its 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6, which should be good for at least 270kW and 510Nm – a similar output to the Kia Stinger GT.
“The Genesis G70 and [Kia] Stinger represent different design philosophies and positions in the market,” Guido Schenken, Hyundai Australia’s PR manager told motoring.com.au.
“The Stinger is a five door touring sedan with a hatch, while the G70 is a pure sports sedan.
“The G70 is shorter, narrower and lighter than Stinger as well as having a shorter wheelbase, hence it’s reasonable to assume it’ll offer better performance,” he told motoring.com.au.
Genesis’ new sports sedan is tipped to be more agile than the Kia too, given its lighter weight, and with at least 270kW on tap, it could rival European stock such as the BMW 340i and Mercedes-AMG C 43.
The prospect of local suspension tuning for the Australian market could also be a boon for potential buyers looking for an engaging car to drive.
Spy photos of the new G70 sedan undergoing pre-production testing at the Nurburgring confirm the vehicle’s sedan body style. The exterior design will also be heavily influenced by the Genesis New York concept which premiered in April 2016, although that car’s quasi lift-back derriere appears to have been scotched.
Expect strong after sales support from Genesis via five-year warranties, and while it’s not clear exactly when the G70 will arrive in Australia, it won’t be an easy sell just because its packing a boosted V6.
The German prestige car trio of BMW, Audi and Mercedes have a vice-like grip on the market, and there’s Lexus and Infiniti to consider as well.
“The Genesis G70 will be on sale in Australia before the end of the year,” said Schenken. “It will be available with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol or 3.3-litre V6 twin turbo.
“We’re not in a position to discuss pricing or specification detail at this time, because we’re still finalising these for the Australia market. We can only confirm the two powertrains.”
Genesis has promised to have a six vehicle garage by 2020, including the upcoming G70, the G80 and G90 sedans, along with a pair of SUVs, expected to be the GV70 and GV80.
The final model will be a grand touring or GT coupe akin to the Lexus LC 500.

Genesis G70 to be faster, lighter than Kia Stinger GT

Genesis plans to try its hand at the sport sedan game when the G70 officially arrives by the end of this year, and it's going to be a quick machine—even outpacing the Kia Stinger GT.
While the Stinger GT will accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds, Genesis has revealed to Motoring that the G70 will be capable of an even quicker time thanks to its lighter platform, supposedly a new design making its debut in the G70.
Both the Stinger GT and G70 receive power from a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine. While we don't know final numbers, the Stinger GT manages 365 horsepower from the mill. The G70 should arrive somewhere in the same ballpark.
"The Genesis G70 and [Kia] Stinger represent different design philosophies and positions in the market," Guido Schenken, Hyundai Australia’s PR manager told Motoring. "The G70 is shorter, narrower and lighter than Stinger as well as having a shorter wheelbase, hence it’s reasonable to assume it’ll offer better performance."
The 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 will certainly be the enthusiast's choice of engine, but a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 will also be available.
Genesis has grand plans as it takes a page from Lexus' handbook. The brand will encompass six distinct models by the end of the decade, including two SUVs, plenty of electrification, and a luxury grand touring coupe. The brand recently previewed what we may see from a future SUV in the GV80 concept.

Genesis G70 comes into focus to take on BMW 3 series

The new G70 will share a platform with Kia's new Stinger, but the Genesis uses a more conventional sedan profile than the Kia. Photo credit: KGP PHOTOGRAPHY

With its global debut just a few
months away, the look of Genesis' first-ever G70 is coming into focus.
Spy photographers recently caught a pair of the new luxury sport sedans undergoing hot-weather testing, alongside a pair of BMW 3-series models for benchmarking. The car will be the first stand-alone model built for the nascent Genesis brand; Hyundai's luxury division also sells the larger G80 and G90 sedans that were previously sold as Hyundai models.

The new G70 will share a platform with Kia's new Stinger, but the Genesis uses a more conventional sedan profile than the Kia. Slightly larger in most dimensions compared with the 3 Series, the camouflaged G70 models showed off design details such as a diamond pattern grille and variations of alloy wheel designs and exhaust outlets, depending on the trim level and engine.
The Genesis G70 will likely use a similar engine lineup as the Stinger. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is expected as the base motor, putting out around 250 hp. The twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 engine that's used in both the Genesis G80 and G90 and the Stinger will likely be optional; it's good for between 300 and 400 hp.

Rear-wheel drive is expected to be standard on the G70, while AWD will be optional.

The inside of the G70 appears to take an understated approach in design. A single tablet-style screen sits at the top of the dashboard, while its corresponding controller can be seen in the center console between the seats.

Trim consists of brushed metal -- knurled on the climate control knobs -- and quilted leather can be seen on the door inserts and the seats themselves.
The Genesis is expected to debut later this summer with an auto show arrival as early as the Frankfurt show in September.

Spied: 2018 Genesis G70 shows more skin

Next

We get a fresh look at the G70's face and part of its interior.
Spies caught the new compact Genesis G70 testing in Death Valley this week (where the new K900 was also recently spotted), giving us a glimpse of both the new sport sedan's interior and some of its performance options.

We'll start inside. The new Genesis G70 is expected to compete with the likes of the BMW 3-Series and the Infiniti Q50, and the cabin looks the part. The leather visible on the wheel and seats is an obvious downgrade from what you'll find in the G80 and G90 sedans, but would be right at home in the aforementioned competition.

The layout is also more sport sedan than luxury tourer, which fits the G70's mission. The climate control knobs are a welcome sight, and the stack-mounted infotainment screen appears minimalist and well-integrated.

Sporting themes continue on the exterior, where Brembo brake calipers and a mesh grille point to this being an example equipped with a performance package of some sort. Since it rides on the same platform as the Kia GT Stinger, we expect it will share the latter's powertrain offerings. Since it's smaller and lighter, we also expect it will be a bit quicker engine-for-engine--an assumption which Hyundai's representatives have corroborated.

We expect the G70 to be unveiled in Los Angeles this fall, where performance specifications and estimates should be more forthcoming.

2018 Genesis G70 caught testing in the Blue Mountains

The 2018 Genesis G70 has been caught testing in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales undergoing local suspension tuning.

THE 2018 GENESIS G70 has been pounding the highways and byways of the Blue Mountains this week as Hyundai’s ride and development team work on local tuning of the BMW 3 Series rival. Practical Motoring spoke briefly with Hyundai Australia PR manager, Guido Schenken who confirmed the Genesis G70 was having its suspension honed on the roads around Katoomba, indeed PM spotted several G70s at a local workshop.
Like all Hyundai products, the Genesis G70 is being tuned to suit Australian roads and driver preferences. Last year, Practical Motoring spent time with the local ride and handling team while it tuned the Elantra SR for Australia.
The Genesis G70 is based on the same platform as the Kia Stinger but it will be shorter, narrower and lighter, according to Hyundai. It’ll run the same four-cylinder and 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 engines and should throw out around the same power and torque, but being lighter it’ll likely be quicker. All variants will run an eight-speed automatic.

Hyundai is quoted as saying the G70 and the Stinger will move in different segments of the market. The Stinger will be targeting those who would have traditionally gone for a performance Falcon or Commodore, while the G70 will take on more expensive and luxurious performance sedans, but should come in with a lower price.
Local pricing and specification hasn’t been announced yet but the G70 is expected to go on-sale here before the end of the year.

SPY PICS: Genesis G70 interior uncovered

Internals of Kia Stinger, BMW 3 Series fighter shown undisguised

The dynamic skillset of a BMW 3 Series and the interior fitout of a Bentley?

This appears the loose brief for Hyundai’s upcoming Genesis G70, based on fresh images from motoring.com.au’s spy photographers.

Already touted as a genuine rear-drive rival to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – not to mention the Kia Stinger, its heavier and slower Korean cousin – the G70 is due to reach Australian showrooms before year’s end. It is understood local testing is already underway.
While the Genesis sub-brand hasn’t directly nominated Bentley as an inspiration for the G70’s interior, you wouldn’t be too out of line to suggest the car’s quilted seats, steering wheel motif, contrasting stitching and general interior layout channelled inspiration from the storied English luxury marque. Or even Audi.
The images reveal the G70 will employ a range of different materials through the cabin, broken up by textured materials and classy metal highlights. A large colour screen holds pride of place at the top of the centre binnacle.

Genesis G70 with the fastest performance to debut in September

이미지 확대
Pictured is ‘Genesis New York Concept’ whose design is known to influence the G70. Photo by Hyundai Motor

South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Company is upping the ante with what would be the fastest home-grown car to be released in September.

The carmaker claims the Genesis G70 can sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds and will compete with top German sedans like the BMW 3-series and Mercedes-Benz C-class.

The 0-100km/h performance represents a car’s up-front ability to accelerate. To date, the fastest car developed in Korea is Kia Stinger GT that accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds. The G70 shares the same manufacturing platform as the sister brand.

The G70 delivers a top-notch driving performance in the independent Genesis lineup covering the EQ900 to the G80. Albert Biermann, who previously headed BMW’s M division, has been overseeing the unit for the G70 responsible for every phase from development to tuning. Sources say the German vice president spent most of his time designing the rear-wheel-drive model with a minimally low empty vehicle weight and a more balanced weight ratio between the front and the real.

The Korean carmaker deployed top designers tapped from global luxury car brands to the G70 design unit. Former Bentley designers like Lee Sang-yup, vice president of Hyundai Motor Styling, and Yoon Il-hun, Chief Designer, Global Advanced Design at Genesis, took over the interior and exterior. Luc Donckerwolke, head of Hyundai Motor’s design center, who was Bentley’s design chief, was known to have coordinated the overall design under the brand’s design philosophy of ‘Athletic Elegance.’ By Park Chang-young

2018 Genesis G70 spotted uncovered, reveal taking place September 15

Genesis has confirmed its 2018 G70 will be unveiled in Seoul, Korea on September 15.
By why wait until September 15? An almost production-ready example of the small sport sedan has been spotted via Instagram user car_photographer_yjs.

The blue G70 pictured features tidy proportions, a gorgeous blue paint color, and Mercedes-AMG GT-esque wheels.
The proportions are traditional rear-wheel drive with a long hood and short rear deck, but the cabin features a fast roofline, which could impede rear headroom and make getting in and out of the rear seats more difficult for taller passengers.

Inside we can see a large infotainment screen that looks like a tablet slapped onto the dashboard, akin to what you'll find in many current Mercedes-Benz vehicles. This aligns with a photo of the G70's interior posted to Instagram via the_koreanbeast. The door panels feature diamond-stitched leather and what appears to be aluminum trim. Three round knobs appear to be the interface for the climate control system, and real buttons seem to be on the menu for the infotainment system.
Power should be provided by a range turbocharged engines including an inline-4 and V-6. A hybrid option is likely in the cards, and power for all models will flow to the rear wheels, though all-wheel drive is likely an option on some models.
The competition for the G70 will be stiff, with everything from the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class to the Lexus IS and Audi A4 vying for the same buyers. A generous warranty should help the Genesis G70 stand out from the crowd.

2018 Genesis G70: Here's How South Korea Fights The Germans
“Come at the king, you best not miss.” That’s what Omar said, and it applies in scenarios like this one. The king is the BMW 3 Series, the midsize sport sedan everyone buys. And these days it has more challengers coming at it than ever. Meet the latest and most different one yet: the 2018 Genesis G70, the first compact sport sedan from Hyundai’s luxury brand.
Right off the bat I’ll say this: it looks sharp. More so than I expected. Granted, it’s a bit indistinctive—the total package reminds me of the Infiniti Q50 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia, two cars it’ll no doubt compete against—but you can’t deny it’s a handsome, aggressive, elegant design. They did good here.

But looks will only get you so far! You can have three things under the hood (just not all at once, obviously): a 2.0-liter turbo four, a 3.3-liter turbo V6, and a 2.2-liter turbodiesel four. America is not getting that last one, Automotive News says, because of course we won’t. But a coupe is expected! That’s nice.

The top model has 365 horsepower, which tops even the BMW 340i. The gas four-cylinder offers 250 HP. It’s available in rear- or all-wheel drive, as these things tend to be. Other goodies include launch control, torque vectoring and an available mechanical limited slip differential.

The G70 will need all those things and more to get really taken seriously in the marketplace. Hyundai and its brands have done amazing things in the past few years, but performance is still an area where they’re seriously lagging. The company’s offerings just aren’t up to par in terms of handling, especially, and outright speed.

On the inside, it’s definitely aimed at BMW—check that control knob and screen combo. I’ll wait to judge it in person, but it looks elegant, and at least something of a step up from nicer Hyundais I’ve driven.

But this is a great move in the right direction, and wrapped in a package that’s handsome and refreshing. We’ll see if it can lure luxury buyers away from the Europeans. The price tag hasn’t been announced yet, but I have a feeling it could help in that department.

Genesis unveils 3 Series-rivaling G70 sedan

The G70 is the third vehicle to join the Genesis lineup.
Genesis, the newly formed luxury arm of Hyundai, has unveiled its latest G70 sedan. The G70 is the third model is the Genesis range, joining the G80 and G90 luxury sedans.

Based on the same rear-wheel drive architecture as the Kia Stinger, the Genesis G70 will compete in the compact luxury segment against vehicles like the BMW 3 Series and Infiniti Q50. The G70 should skew much more toward a sports sedan than either the G80 or G90.
The G70 was designed with a long hood and short overhangs to give the car a sporty appearance. The front of the G70 is highlighted by Genesis' signature grille and aggressive-looking air inlets in the lower bumper. Headlights house LED daytime running lights.
The rear of the G70 features distinct fender lines and a slightly raised trunk. Taillights are well integrated and feature LED technology. A pair of dual exhaust outlets are located in the G70's bumper.
Genesis says the G70 boasts "superb fit and finish throughout" its interior, and the first official images of the sedan's cabin appear to support that claim. The G70 features luxurious touches like aluminum door handles, quilted leather door cards, metal speaker grilles and Nappa leather. The horizontal dash design is clean and simple, with few physical buttons cluttering up the G70's interior.
The G70 will come standard with an 8-inch touchscreen capable of running both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A 15-speaker Lexicon premium audio system will be offered as an available option.

Genesis hasn't detailed the G70's powertrain lineup for the U.S., but the sports sedan will be available with three different drivetrains globally. Those include a turbocharged 3.3L V6 rated at 365 horsepower, a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder rated at about 250 horsepower and a 2.2L diesel with 199 horsepower.
All G70 models will come standard with rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive will be available across the board. Genesis says the G70 will be able to scoot from 0-62 in 4.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 168mph in its most potent form.
The G70 will come with a bevy of safety equipment, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Highway Driving Assist (HDA), Blind spot Collision Warning (BCW) and Driver Awareness Warning (DAW). The sedan will also come with an active hood function intended to lessen the severity of a collision with a pedestrian.
Genesis will likely introduce the G70 to the United States market later this year at the Los Angeles auto show. Sales should begin sometime in 2018.

Genesis G70 review: Hyundai’s 3-Series and Giulia rival driven

PrevNext

Full screen

1/10

What the devil is a Genesis G70?
Ambitious, that’s what. It’s a small, rear-drive premium saloon car. So that makes it a rival for – deep breath – the BMW 3-Series, Lexus IS, Audi A4, and Mercedes C-Class. You only need ask the upstart Alfa Romeo Giulia and Jaguar XE how difficult it is to dent that segment.
Oh yeah, the Genesis has to fight those cars too. And, because it’s on sale in Asia and the USA, the likes of Infiniti, plus Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac. See, it’s ambitious.
I’m still not clear on what a Genesis is, though.
In the beginning, there was Hyundai, and then Hyundai begat a luxury offshoot called Genesis after earlier success building a massive barge called the Equus. It’s just like when Toyota created Lexus and Nissan dreamt up Infiniti.
Genesis, meanwhile, has been working its way down the posh saloon size chart, selling 150,000 cars in three years along the way. First we got a G90 (S-Class and 7-Series rival), then a G80 (E-class and 5-Series rival) and now the G70 has arrived to complete the Genesis triple-threat.
The marque has set deep roots in its homeland and the US market, and has won big on customer service surveys. So, the G70 is the classic move to snare younger, less wealthy buyers now the bedrock is steady.
Okay, got it. What has the G70 got, well, going for it?
A platform shared with the reasonably talented Kia Stinger for a kick-off, which means short overhangs, a stiff body, either rear- or four-wheel drive and the option of a 3.3-litre V6 ‘Turbo Sport’ version with 367bhp and a top speed of 168mph. That makes it faster than an M3, all out. It’ll knock off 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds along the way.
Like the Stinger GT then, but this isn’t supposed to be a sporty Audi S4 rival. That’s Kia’s job. Genesis is aimed at being far more refined, and techy. Which they might have overdone, a tad.
Really? What’s it packing?
On Korean market versions, everything from a pop-up pedestrian-friendly bonnet and automatic highway driving assistance galore to the best ergonomic gimmick we’ve heard of in ages. Instead of setting the seat and steering wheel positions with different buttons then saving them to a memory button, the G70’s ‘Smart Posture’ function asks only that you tell the car your height.
It’ll then marshal the seat, steering wheel, mirrors and head-up display to a preset position that ought to perfectly match your body shape. Clever, if your G70 is destined for a household or workplace with drivers sized like the Evolution of Man chart.
You want more? How about launch control? No, not just for the Turbo Sport V6. The 248bhp 2.0-litre petrol G70 has getaway mode too. So does the 200bhp 2.2-litre diesel. All versions also score apex-seeking torque-vectoring. And a proper mechanical limited-slip diff. I’m not joking. Can you guess which German race-track the G70’s been putting the hard development yards in around?
So is the G70 much cop to drive?
There’s plenty about the G70 that makes it feel credible and properly sorted, but it’s not the Nürburgring breeding that leaps out at you. It’s the refinement. Besides an Audi A4, no small saloon hushes up wind noise this well, and at a cruise you could fool yourself into thinking it’s electric. The drivetrain is silent.
If you want it to make noise, it’ll make a good one. The turbo V6 rasps as it revs freely towards 6,500rpm, at which point, like it or not, the eight-speed automatic gearbox will upchange for you. There’s no defined manual mode, but clicking the wheel-mounted paddles gives a temporary override.
Left to its own devices, the transmission is logical and smooth, and quick enough if the G70’s aiming to match the claimed 4.7sec 0-62mph time. It feels properly punchy in the ebb and flow of Seoul freeway traffic. No mean feat, given the all-wheel drive variant weighs a hefty 1,820kg.
Does it look and feel suitably ‘watch out, Europe’ inside?
Tell you what, someone at Genesis has had a sit in a Bentley Flying Spur recently. They’ve observed the winged steering wheel emblem, the diamond-quilted seats and metal-rimmed switchgear and thought “yes, we’ll do…all of that.”
The G70’s cabin is tightly put together and it’s laid out with a very Germanic logic. Three guesses why. There’s plenty of plastic doing its best impression of knurled or brushed metal, but the leather is supple and smells more expensive than we’re used to in Korean cars. It’ll struggle as a chauffeur option: there’s little headroom in the back and not enough foot wiggle space if the driver has their seat set low. Odd, for a car that’s about 60mm longer and 40mm wider than a 3-Series.
Back in the, er, front… the graphics are sharp and there are about four hundred menus and displays to discover. There’s a G-meter and lap timer, for instance.
Is it more luxury saloon than sports saloon, as prescribed?
Definitely. Albert Biermann, the ex-BMW M Division chief who was sensationally poached by Hyundai-Kia to run their performance vehicle programmes, admits that the body control is “perhaps not so good”, but there’s method in the G70’s penchant to wallow when it’s hustled. South Korea is a land of very smooth roads, but also many speed bumps. The locals don’t appear to care about slowing down a great deal for them, so the Korean market G70s we were driving are set up with a dollop of squidge factor in the ride to cope with the sleeping policeman assault course. American market and future European Genesises will have that pitch and wobble tightened up.
And we’ve driven it on circuit. Seriously. Sure, the G70’s no natural track car, but at the technical and undulating Inju Speedium racetrack we were able to try a slightly more focused version. Instead of the AWD G70s we’d driven on the road, a pre-production G70 ‘Dynamic Edition’ was ready to play. Rear-wheel drive, 70kg lighter, with retuned, more direct steering and ride settings much closer to what American customers can expect.
Sounds promising…
And the G70 Dynamic lived up to that billing. It’s more accelerative, better balanced, more agile and genuinely, hilariously playful. There’s M-car DNA woven through this thing, in how it’ll sit steady on the limit of grip, then lock its diff and slide super progressively with a bout of throttle. The rear end squats less, the steering is reassuring and positive, and it’s palpably faster than the AWD car. Seriously, it’s more fun than an Audi S4 or Mercedes C43 and would ask very difficult questions of a Jaguar XE S.
All bodes well, doesn’t it? Genesis is plotting a European invasion in 2019, and its products are getting competitive. Meanwhile, the influence and talent of Albert Biermann and his team is at last making Korean drivers’ cars. Here’s hoping it translates into the Hyundai i30 N hot hatch we’re driving very soon…
