Default Detroit Electric SP:01

picks up where the Tesla Roadster left off

We won't fault you if the name Detroit Electric has fallen off your radar. After all, the company is best known for producing around 13,000 electric vehicles in the early 1900s, not to mention a revival from the Zap brand that, well, faded away. But the company is back in action, and today showed off its first product that is set to go on sale later this year, the sweet little SP:01 that you see above.
By the end of 2014, Detroit Electric will produce a range of all-electric cars.
It's no secret that the company is relying on a Lotus Exige shell for its new electric car, and that's largely thanks to the fact that the brand was revived by former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and executive director of Lotus Cars of England, Albert Lam. As its name suggests, Detroit Electric has set up shop in the city's historic Fisher Building, and will produce cars at a facility somewhere in the metropolitan Detroit area. The company states that this dedicated production shop will have an annual capacity of building 2,500 cars and will create over 180 jobs in the process.

By the end of 2014, Detroit Electric will produce a range of all-electric cars, with two more machines scheduled to launch sometime next year. The SP:01 – the first product to wear the Detroit Electric name since 1939 – starts production this August, and pay attention, because it looks to have all the chops of a serious high-performance EV. Scroll down to read on.

The SP:01 uses bespoke bodywork constructed for Detroit Electric, made entirely out of carbon fiber, and is supplied to the company as a rolling chassis. The 90.6-inch wheelbase, fully independent front and rear suspensions, and front anti-roll bar are all retained, though the Lotus' Eibach coil springs and Bilstein damper rates have been modified to match the SP:01's unique weight distribution. The car still uses a mid-rear configuration – motor and battery pack in the middle, power sent to the rear wheels – and comes with a removable body-colored hardtop. That electric powerplant is visible through a transparent hatch integrated into the rear bodywork, and buyers will be able to choose from three different alloy wheel designs, as well as seven exterior colors including the Electric Blue you see here.
It will be able to reach 62 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds and will carry on to a top speed of 155 mph.
Inside, the SP:01 has an integrated smartphone in the center console that controls all of the car's auxiliary functions, and the entire cockpit is finished in swaths of leather and carbon fiber trim. That smartphone system, named SAMI (Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment) includes amenities like navigation and a music player, while allowing the driver to adjust the regenerative braking and interior lighting, as well as viewing key status points for the vehicle's operation (level of charge, range, etc.). And yes, it makes phone calls.

But the heart and soul of the SP:01 is what's behind those seats – an electric propulsion system that Detroit Electric says will make its vehicle the "fastest-ever production electric car," stating that it will be able to reach 62 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds and will carry on to a top speed of 155 mph. (For the record, that's the same 0-60 as the Tesla Roadster Sport.)

Two 37-kWh lithium-polymer batteries power an air-cooled, asynchronous AC electric motor that Detroit Electric says is made in the US, and total power output is equal to 201 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. The company says that the SP:01 will have a driving range of 180 miles on the New European Driving Cycle, and while official calculations haven't been released, this will likely equate to around 150 miles on a US cycle.
The SP:01's motor drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission – that's right, it's an EV with a stick.
But unlike other EVs that use a single-speed transmission, the SP:01's motor drives the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission – that's right, it's an EV with a stick. But here's where things get tricky: Detroit Electric says that an optional fifth gear in the manual transmission is available, as is a two-speed automatic gearbox. According to the manufacturer's press release, there is no need to use the clutch pedal when starting from a standstill, and you don't need to push the clutch in when coming to a stop, either – the motor just, well, stops. The company also says that first gear is good for speeds of up to around 30 mph, second gear will bring you up to about 60 mph, and only above that would you need to use third or fourth (or fifth).
All in, the SP:01 tips the scales at a scant 2,403 pounds. Power steering is not fitted (the company says it isn't needed), but the car does come with standard AP front and Brembo rear brakes (as well as ABS), and the whole package rolls on 175/55R16 tires up front and 225/45R17 rubbers out back. Regenerative braking is, of course, on hand, but Detroit Electric says that in standard mode, the sensation of lifting off the accelerator should be equivalent to that of a normal gasoline-powered car. This can be turned up, however.

As for charging times, Detroit Electric says that used in conjunction with "any charge point delivering 240 volts and 32 amps," the SP:01 will achieve a full state of charge in 4.3 hours. Reduce that to a 13-amp source and that time climbs to a full eight hours.

Detroit Electric also says that the SP:01 has a bi-directional charge and discharge system, turning the car into a sort of mobile energy unit, allowing the driver to use the vehicle to power an entire home. This is all done through something called a 360 Powerback, which when connected to the home charging unit, can provide the owner the option to have the car restore power to the home if there's a failure in the grid, all of which is controlled via SAMI. Weird stuff, but hey, neat if your power goes out.

Pricing for the SP:01 starts at a hefty $135,000.
It sort of goes without saying that we'll be watching this one very closely, and we're already working out a chance to drive one of these things. Pricing for the SP:01 starts at a hefty $135,000, and specific costs for the optional extras (fifth gear activation, automatic transmission, carbon fiber hardtop, different colored interior leather) have not been released at this time.

Have a look below for the full details in the Detroit Electric press release.

Detroit Electric SP:01 slated for production later this year - report

Detroit Electric SP:01 [4th Apr, 2013]

An April Fool's Day joke a year in the making

The Detroit Electric SP:01 was slated to go into production last August but after a series of delays the company has reportedly targeted production for later this year.
According to The Detroit Bureau, Detroit Electric will begin building the SP:01 in Holland later this year. However, the company hasn't given up hopes of returning to the Motor City as they are reporting planning to produce an electric sedan in Michigan later this decade.
While we're not getting our hopes up, as the company has previously announced plans to begin building the SP:01 in Holland last year, the car is based on the Lotus Exige and features a mid-mounted electric motor that produces 201 bhp (150 kW) and 166 lb-ft (225 Nm) of torque. This should enable the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Eh! Pointless car.

Now if they really want to push electric cars take the FR-S/BRZ make it electric and sell it somewhere in the $30k range.

Oh and to now building the Detroit Electric car in Holland. They should just go to what is left of Detroit, line up its citizens and kick them in the nuts 1 by 1.

Detroit Electric shows off SP:01 final design

Detroit Electric SP:01 production version

Adopts a fastback look

Following a teaser video released earlier this month, Detroit Electric has published two images with the SP:01's final design.
While the original concept had a roadster body style, the production version has made the switch to a fastback silhouette optimized using computational fluid dynamics to ensure greater performance and stability. The Detroit Electric SP:01 is still based on the Lotus Exige and compared to the concept it has reshaped front air intake and outlet ducts on the hood as a method to optimize airflow of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
Motivation will be provided by a mid-mounted electric motor generating 278 bhp (207 kW) and 206 lb-ft (280 Nm) of torque whereas the concept had 201 bhp (150 kW) and 166 lb-ft (225 Nm). It will be enough to cover the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) run in 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). It tips the scales at 1,175 kg (2,590 lbs) and comes with a 37 kWh battery pack granting a maximum range of 179 miles (288 km).
The Detroit Electric SP:01 will be manufactured in Warwickshire, United Kingdom and is scheduled to go on sale early next year in Europe, North America, Asia, Middle East and Africa.

Detroit Electric SP:01 to have Pure and Performance versions, up to 286 PS

Detroit Electric SP:01

288 km range

Detroit Electric has released full specifications concerning the Lotus Exige-based SP:01 electric sportscar.
First up, the Pure version comes with an electric motor producing 204 PS (105 kW) and an instant torque of 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) which grants the SP:01 with a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in 5.6 seconds and a 106 mph (170 km/h) top speed.
As for the hotter Performance edition, this one uses an uprated electric motor with 286 PS (210 kW) and the same 280 Nm, enough for a 3.9-second sprint time before topping out at 155 mph (250 km/h).
The cars share a 37 kWh battery pack providing enough juice for 288 km in both cases, even though the Performance version is slightly heavier (1,175 kg compared to 1,155 kg).
Despite its name, the Detroit Electric SP:01 will actually be built in Warwickshire, United Kingdom and will go on sale before the end of this year in Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and the Middle East.
Detroit Electric says the SP:01 will be followed by other "high-performance models" sometime next year.

First Detroit Electric SP:01 production car completed at UK factory

First Detroit Electric SP:01 production car completed at UK factory

Detroit Electric has finished assembly of the first production-spec SP:01 fully electric sports car.
The marque’s name might tempt you to believe the SP:01 is made in USA, but in reality the Lotus Exige-based performance EV is actually assembled at the company’s Leamington Spa manufacturing facility in UK. The model is bound to go on sale in Asia and Europe in the coming weeks and this first unit is destined for the export market.
Billed as being the “world’s lightest and fastest two-seat pure-electric sports car”, the SP:01 promises to offer class-leading power to weight ratio and “blistering acceleration” quoted to stand at 3.9 seconds for the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint when equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. As standard, the car will come with a single-speed automatic transmission, but clients will also be able to order the vehicle with an optional twin-speed automatic or the manual.
That sprint time will be possible with the more powerful SP:01 Performance rated at 286 PS (210 kW) whereas the lesser SP:01 Pure will have 204 PS (150 kW) and cover the run in 5.6 seconds. Both of them will have 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque and share a 37 kWh battery which will provide enough juice for an estimated 288 km (179 miles) based on the NEDC testing cycle.
There’s no word about how long it will take to fill up the batteries, but Detroit Electric mentions the car benefits from built-in bi-directional charge and discharge capabilities through a patented home charging and power back-up unit known as “360-Powerback” that effectively transforms the SP:01 into a power source for your home.
Detroit Electric says they will reveal information regarding pricing for European and Asian markets in a short while.

Detroit Electric hands over first production SP:01

Detroit Electric has built the first production-spec SP:01 and delivered it to the company's Chinese distributor Jowett Motors.

Handed over at a special ceremony in the United Kingdom, the white SP:01 was presented to Jowett Motors Chairman Dr Richard Lee by Detroit Electric Head of Engineering Ben Boycott. The model will now be shipped to China where it will serve as a demonstrator vehicle to help entice potential customers.

The SP:01 will go on sale in Asia and Europe shortly and the model is billed as the "world’s lightest and fastest two-seat pure-electric sports car." It features a carbon fiber body and an electric motor that produces 281 horsepower. This enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds before hitting a top speed of 155 mph.
In a statement, Detroit Electric CEO Albert Lam said “We are extremely proud to team up with Jowett Motors, a company that has an exceptional track record in the establishment and selling of exclusive, high performance sports cars in the Chinese market." Lam went on to say the company is gearing up for full-scale production and has plans to introduce a range of pure electric vehicles.

Detroit Electric promises 3 cars in 3 years, including sports car

Teaser for Detroit Electric sports car, sedan and SUV
Enlarge Photo

Historic American car brand Detroit Electric, now based in the United Kingdom and backed by Chinese funds, has outlined plans for three new cars.
Impressively, the electric car startup is promising to introduce the three cars over the next three years. They include a sports car, sedan and SUV.
A teaser sketch hinting at the profile design of the three cars was released by Detroit Electric on Wednesday at the 2017 Low Carbon Vehicle Event in Bedford, U.K.
Detroit Electric’s original plan was one that mimicked Tesla’s start. The company developed an electric sports car based on a donor Lotus chassis and started building the first examples in late 2015. Profits from the sale of the sports car were to be used to develop future models.

Instead, Detroit Electric will tap into a $1.8 billion capital injection from a joint venture formed with China's Far East Smarter Energy Group earlier this year to accelerate its product plans.
The three new cars are in the early stages of development. Detroit Electric is looking to recruit up to 200 engineers by next spring to accelerate development. The company will also expand its current headquarters in Leamington Spa with a new R&D facility. This will work alongside an existing engineering hub in China.
Production will take place in both the U.K and China, with higher volume models like the sedan and SUV likely being sourced from the latter. Detroit Electric is hoping to sell its cars worldwide.
It’s too early to talk specs but Detroit Electric is looking to offer a driving range of between 300 and 500 miles on a single charge, depending on the vehicle. Note, this is likely on the more lenient European cycle so should be lower if rated by the EPA.
