Default Vectra audio build thread

Hi

Thought I might put some equipment into the Vectra winter beater I have hanging around.., for some of you guys that haven't seen a Vectra before its a 4 door 1.8L car made my GM that is pretty crap, it has no outstanding features at all, its FWD, slow and still manages to drink a lot of fuel.

I started off by adding a 0 gauge power supply to the boot and decided to use a battery as the distribution block (it is screwed into the metal floor with fastenings under the car)

TB3 under the hood

Alpine head unit and signal processor in a double din unit

Old skool rockford punch 40x2 on the stock speakers, I did have another amp lined up for the job but this fitted in the hole quite well and although it does not look it this is one of the best class AB amps money can buy!

I added a CXQ3 so I could adjust the sub amp from the front of the car without going into the head unit settings, it has a remote control for the front of the car which comes in quite handy IME

Things getting slightly more serious now with the soundstream XXX-10000D to power the subwoofer, this thing is rated at 10KW RMS if you can provide the power consumption....I will only be asking it to give out around 1500-2000w for the time being.

I would have liked to hide it away somewhere but that does not seem possible with something of this size.

I am sure the driver will be upgraded in the future for something that can handle around 4-5K but for now a single 12W7 from the loft will have to do, here we see the box in an unfinished state with the plan to make a false floor over the top of the box.

It is a 2.2cuft enclosure ported for 33hz with around 40" sq port

Should be doing a bit more work on the install tomorrow!

Cut some 6mm MDF to fit the boot area

And finish with a bit of ebay carpet.

I'll put a speaker grill over the port to stop anything rolling in there and never coming back out lol

It was not really a surprise that the 12W7 gave up the ghost after a short while on this high output amplifier, I intend to put something a bit more serious into the boot this time around but I would still like to keep the clean look the boot has at the moment.

Keeping the clean look and having a box large enough to fit a serious sized woofer in is quite a challenge, it seems to can get a maximum of about 3.6 cubic ft using a square shallow box up to the hatch line but if we are to fit something bigger we need something closer to 8 cubic ft.

So we need to take all of the area available in the boot including the spare wheel well

I built up the sides with 3mm thick MDF, it looks a bit shit but it should be ok when its got some fibreglass over it to help stiffen it up!

Baseplate for the new enclosure, will need to be chopped about somewhat but this is the basic shape we are going for.

I cut the baseplate and dropped the spare wheel box through it before screwing it together, still looks shit and is nowhere near strong enough yet but I hope some filling and fibreglass with fix that issue in the next stage

I am somewhat split between going with an 18" SHD, 2 x FI SP4's or 4 x SPL Dynamics 300d2 as drivers, looking to port at 30hz and have some good air movement through the cabin!

I done a bit of filling with grip-fill on the areas that didn't quite mate up nicely and started to build the sides up, again this is before I hit it with some fiberglass to help stiffen it up.

Managed to find some time to get the box fibreglassed and gelcoated, I am pretty shit with the fibreglass but I guess there is no extra points for being pretty at this stage.

Inch thick baffle board meets up with the boot quite well, its a bit higher than the old box.

Still a lot of work to do...

Port dry fitted with the SP4's (god they look awesome!)

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

Video URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrB-xZWCQaM&feature=youtu.be

This leaves about 1 inch gap from the window at its closest point when fully extended, there is around 5" gap below the port in the box, not ideal I know but it is what it is.

Moar pics for those that are interested.

Test run with a leaky unfinished enclosure, port showing the 25hz effect.

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

The back of the subs touched the shelf slightly so I fitted some grills to allow the to clear and also allow some air movement when the shelf is fitted.

Enclosure carpeted and pretty much complete boot wise.

25-32hz depending on how long you have it, I actually have the port for sale now as the build was removed a while ago when I sold that car, pity.

Thanks for sharing. I never would have thought about having an adjustable port. mind blown.

The real trick is to have the post moving in line with frequency being played, then you have an enclosure that is always playing at optimum output, it is possible to do, it just has to move very fast.
