Default The build begins: 82' KZ440 Bratracker: Progress pg 3

I'll try to condense everything into this thread

All stock and ready to be cut up 7-27-10

Removed a few things 3-25-11

New bars, temporary LED Tail 4-4-11

Bars flipped, new turn signals 8-4-11

Started tear down 1-13-12

Main wires I will keep labeled

As of 1-16-12

Engine removed, soon to be down to bare frame

Plans:

-Rebuild Engine + Fresh Black Paint on Block & Heads. Polished side covers
-Full frame resto. Lots of grinding, smoothing and fresh paint (color not decided yet)
-Assembly with a box full of new parts and aftermarket (lights, bars, rear sets, new seat/tail
-New Tires (new paint on wheels to come)

Found some rust underneath the point cover

Engine out

Looks good. Can't wait to see it done.

What are your plans for the suspension?

Depends on what I come across along the way. If I can find some newer street bike forks and rear swingarm then I will fab those to work. If not, then I'll leave it stock or just upgrade the rear shocks.

Just depends. I'll figure all that out when I get back together to a certain point.

reminds me of when I was working on my CL350. I turned it into a cafe bike. I would recommend some drag bars on that beast. Look around for some more modern suspension components. Are you wanting to keep it dual shock?

Possibly. I like the look, so may stick with it.

I got air shocks for my old CL350. They were awesome. You could make them firmer or softer depending on how much air you had in them.

Seems like the build is all I can think about. Got a everything on paper, as in a To-Do-List, parts, etc...

Also got a color scheme setup

My plan also, or sooner. Because I have a task ahead of me of getting my carbs right. And from what others have told me and my research....it's major pain to jet/tune these Keihlin 36mm carbs

Dump the Keihins unless you can get some newer flat slide ones. Otherwise go with some mikuni's cheap and get the job done.

Head is off. In process of clean up.

Nasty valves. Soon to be all cleaned up...Maybe some porting....:yuno:

Pulled the side covers and cleaned the matting surfaces. Stuck them back on in the mean time. Still need to remove the lower pan, pull the clutch, deep clean the block for paint....yum

Little test to see if I will like the Gloss Black Engine Paint

And no, that's not a crack

Looks nasty. Could you catch your finger nail on the bores? Are you going to slightly hone it and put new rings in or what? Trying to make some more power?

On my old CL350 I shaved the headgasket to give the engine more power along with threw in some new rings since the motor was pretty low mileage.

30 Years and 18K miles it's pretty dirty. At least the engine case gaskets are not leaking.

Nothing in the bore that would catch. Still trying to find some rings, Z1 Enterprises do not carry them for some reason. Looking around on ebay.

Part of me want's to just clean it up and re-assemble since nothing is really worn to where it needs replaced...

Then another part of me just wants to replace anything I can with new (pending parts availability)

Those bores are worn out pretty badly.. Looks like a 2 stroke bore with all those "seizure" marks. You can tell the rings are done. The pistons have quite a bit of blowby evidenced by the dark black streaks and the piston domes.

At the very least you need to bore it the next size over and go from there.

Got it somewhat back together. Did a quick hone to get the glaze off and it looks good. Rings are in great shape so I am going to stick with them. Removed the pistons for clean up, all mating surfaces cleaned. Ready to go back together. Then ready for paint and hours and hours of re-polishing the side covers.
