I survived a corporate restructuring - KCSR

We are not that big, they cut 20 people and roughly 90 have new managers / structure. This is not quite a year after a merger.

Anybody else have recent success or horror stories they would like to share?

I left my last org as they were going through it. Laid off 1300 employees but my dept wasn't touched. However, shortly after I left the entire set of staff in my dept was "sold" back to Cerner, so everyone transitioned back to them. I wasn't wanting to do that for many reasons so I'm glad I left when I did.

My company was acquired by a PE firm less than a year ago, and the restructuring is really starting to hit us. I got a promotion during all this though, so that was pretty neat!

In 2014 I left a job and went to New York Life. Rumors were that we were getting sold, even before I took the job. 60 days after I got hired, we were announcing our sale to John Hancock.

Things could not have worked out better. They restructured our comp agreements, and I have the ability to make $60K more per year now than I did before.

In year one, I made about $50k more than max eligible comp in the prior year.

I left government contracting at the end of 2016 for a position with the railroad. I now have amazing benefits, a pension, stock, etc. It was a calculated move as I find myself closer and closer to retirement.

I just lost my job yesterday due to this. Survived 6 rounds, but they decided to let me go and keep the guys that were reporting to me instead.

Basically 7 weeks, plus my bonus paid out at 100% and 14 days of vacation paid out, Plus benefits for the 7 weeks. Not bad for only being there for 18 months. Still better than being a lead at Cerner. Time to start looking for a PM role somewhere in KC.

The KC Federal Reserve is(was) hiring a lot of PM type positions.. once the hiring freeze is up, they should be ramping up again.

Thanks for the heads up. Actually 4 of my coworkers recently left to go to the Fed. My specific area was automation and I hear the Fed is looking at utilizing it soon.

My plan is to self study with the PMBOK and Rita's and then attend the PMP boot camp since it satisfies the PDU's needed ( I only have 14). I have friends and former colleagues who did this and recommended it as they said it made them feel well prepared.

I made it through 2008-2009 at Perceptive. Was certain I was going to get hacked because I was part of the new crop but I survived. Sad too because there were other new crop people who hadn't had a chance to work on the projects I did and prove they maybe belonged there more than some others.

Huge deal too because it allowed me to keep my career on-track and I made a lot of connections. Its hard to believe that the simple act of surviving that recession less than a decade ago might literally be responsible for a good 40k of my income.

If you have the time, I would recommend the PMP classes at JoCo. When I took my test I felt the JoCo classes were what helped me the most. Reading and memorizing the book, all those little details, they test for those.

It's been over 10 years since I took the test so it might have changed since then.

Thanks Dave, I'll look into the JCCC classes to see when they offer them, always forget they offer prep classes.

Right place, right time can be everything.

I've been so lucky I have to pinch myself sometimes. I could easily still be running an Applebee's, or like concept, and be making 50K+ less/yr.

+1 on that - sometimes I stop and thank my lucky stars. I made a passion into a career, that in itself likely added up to a better part of my income today.

I like to gather certs, A+, MCSE+I+S, RHCSE, CCNA, CISSP, GIAC, CEH, PMP, MCSM, R Certified Engineer...and a few others for odd shit like VMware, Docker, Ansible, Matasploit, AIX, AS400, RACF, Banyan Vines. I'm also Certified to repair CFE16 controller boards in the Alpha Micro platforms, I've done too many old fujitsu hawk controller refits also, too many...

To be honest, I'm now looking forward to the day I can hang it up and just get into my garage and finish a project or two. One of the greatest joys of living the DINK life, early retirement.
