I did a 700R4 swap on a friend's '76 - super simple - got the tranny for $30 that the seller said was "good when it was pulled but sitting 5 years" condition, pulled pan, checked it out, threw in a few Sonnax parts (Pressure regulator valve and spring, boost valve, etc.) and bolted it in - used stock crossmember, re-used stock shift linkage (it's now PRN(OD),3,2 - no manual low 1st) - wired up the lockup to just automatically lock up in 4th (uses the stock 4th gear pressure switch) - there are plenty of diagrams out there that show how to do that. TV cable was hooked up to the carb - can't remember if we used the TV corrector bracket or just made one from the many templates online. Total cost was around $100 and it shifts good and firm but not hard and handles a mild 355 just fine (flat tops, summit hydraulic cam, edelbrock intake, holley 600, headers)

You would never know it's got the OD unless you looked underneath or realized it shifted one too many times

Awesome! I've got a nice pile of parts to keep me busy for a few weeks now. Interior and brakes showed up quickly, motor still isn't in, but I should be able to mess with that sunday/monday!

Good news! I'm out of money to spend on parts, so I've actually got to dig into this thing and do some work now!

Here's what I have so far

SSBC 80mm piston upgraded disc brakes
SS brake lines front and rear
McGaughy 5/7 drop ( Springs, spindles, flip kit, shackles )
All new tan interior ( Door panels, dash, carpet, seats, console, seat belts )
Fresh 327ci engine
Water pump
Fuel pump
Edelbrock Carb ( not too excited about this )
Vintage air cleaner
New trans filter and gaskets
15x8 Rally wheels w/beauty rings and chevy centers
new BFG rubber ( 255/60 front 275/60 rear )
Big box of stinger extreme sound deadener
Fluids (Wilwood brake fluid, Brad Penn oil, trans fluid, coolant, new gear oil for rear-end)
Blast and coat the LT headers

Should be sick. Gimme a few months and she'll be driving. Far from done... at least my parts pile will all be put to use. I'll have to sink some money into some new A/C parts I'm sure, as well as a whole slew of new bushings for everything... But all of that can wait till it is on the ground and moving under it's own power.

Got the front suspension, brakes, and brakes lines done first.

Then I got the motor in, and started hanging accessories:

I've got to finish rebuilding the carb, and drain and change the trans and rear-end fluid. After that I'll get the interior pulled and get a nice layer of sound deadener put down.

Should have some more updates in the next few weeks.

This truck has been so much damn fun. I've got a mega cool neighbor dude who has been a ton of help getting the motor ready to go in. Adjusting the valves, priming the oil pump, just generally doing everything the "right" way.

I've learned that the motor is going to be a pretty decent setup, even though I was just shooting for "running and driving reliably"... It should actually be decently potent compared to stock.

Another great discovery, this truck has had a 12 bolt rear-end swapped in at some point, which is great news!

Not a lot to gain on the truck 12 bolts in strength. They have a smaller pinion shaft than the 10s. Truck looks good!

Thanks!

I'm not CERTAIN if it is a truck or a car 12 bolt. I guess I'll find out when I pull the axles in a few days and see what the deal is. I'm hoping it is a car 12 bolt!

Sweet project! Funny how little the engine looks in that huge engine bay.

It does look funny doesn't it!

Now that the radiator is in and accessories are all hung it looks quite a bit more filled.

The fan shroud is absurdly huge...I'll switch to an E-Fan and some nicer looking stuff after she's running down the road again.

Haven't updated this in a while!

I've got the brakes and suspension done (mostly), so it is on the ground now.

Should get it running tonight.. lol I've said that like 15 times now... But I really think tonight is the night. ha ha

Here are some pics of it on the ground.

After it is running I'll pull it outside and give it it's first bath in 16 years... and take some pics of the interior. It looks really nice now with the saddle door panels and dash, and tan carpet with tan saddle blanket seat cover...

I pulled out the whole interior and did sound deadener.

Thing is so killer. Also, these trucks have gone silly in value recently, so the money you're putting into it is well worth it.

Excited to see more updates!

Little update...

I’m going to add some more photos, but I’ve done a lot, and driven in at least a few days a week for the last couple of years.

New glass all around. No more back slider window.

New steering box. 12.5:1 ratio. It is aweeeeesome
New steering shaft for a 90’s Jeep Cherokee so no more rag joint. Nice and tight

New adjustable trans crossmember (with curves up to clear exhaust)

Up next:

Locker
Fuel injection. Lol
