how many coaches came through before Reid that actually did anything?

Marty, Vermeil, and Reid are literally the only coaches worth a damn in the last 30 years of Chiefs football.

Now Reid needs Nagy to stay and continue the QB play to Mahomes ( you saw how much better Jared Goff was with Mcvay in LA this year).

The division is going through a low spot, oakland sucks, denver sucks, chargers are decent but Rivers can't have more than a few years left.

Get Wade phillips as D coordinator and do something with the defense. The only ones from the D line who should be back are Chris Jones, Jenkins (cheap contract), and Nacho. The rest needs replaced.

O-line is struggling as well.

Sucks to be rebuilding again but that's where we are. Typically it takes 3 years to rebuild to a playoff caliber team.

Former NFL Executive and former CBS insider Michael Lombardi reported on his podcast this morning that Bob Sutton isn't coming back and there will be changes to the coaching staff as well as personnel on the defensive side of the ball.

The Chiefs Kingdom is saying Reid supposedly took back play calling and scheming to give Nagy time to prepare for the interviews. That Nagy helped with the first 15 plays and that was it.

It looked like that in game... but absolutely no way Reid or Nagy would do that.

Benefits Nagy too much to get the playoff win, and Reid isn't going to let his playcaller go prepare to leave the team during a game... that's not realistic.

Chiefs assistant head coach Brad Childress has been planning to retire, and it doesn’t sound like Andy Reid will be able to talk him out of it after Matt Nagy’s departure. He’s at peace. More turnover in KC

The Chiefs signed 10 players to reserve-futures deals this week.

They are: running back George Atkinson, receiver Daniel Braverman, receiver Gehrig Dieter, tight end Anthony Firkser, guard/tackle Dillon Gordon, outside linebacker Tyrone Holmes, guard Kaleb Johnson, nose tackle Mike Purcell, cornerback Will Redmond and tackle Andrew Wylie.

All 10 were on the Chiefs’ practice squad at the end of the season. Dieter is the only one who spent the entire season with the team.

Their signings give the Chiefs 15 players currently under contract on reserve-futures deals. The others are nose tackle Josh Augusta, cornerback Sheldon Price, cornerback Prince Charles Iworah, cornerback Makinton Dorleant and receiver Brandon Shippen.

The Chiefs have named Eric Bieniemy as the replacement for Matt Nagy, who departed to become head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Bieniemy, 48, served the Chiefs as running backs coach for the last five seasons

Chiefs hire Deland McCullough, running backs coach from USC

The KC Chiefs have a new running backs coach. Deland McCullough interviewed with the Chiefs on Thursday and they hired him, according to the KC Star’s Terez Paylor.
McCullough will replace Eric Bieniemy as the Chiefs running backs coach after Bieniemy was promoted to offensive coordinator.
McCullough was at USC last year and before that he was at Indiana. I don’t know much about his coaching style other than while at Indiana he coached a few future NFL players — Tevin Coleman (Falcons), Jordan Howard (Bears) and Devine Redding (Chiefs).
So that seems pretty impressive. McCullough will be inheriting a pretty good situation with not only Kareem Hunt but Spencer Ware also coming back.

Chiefs will be hard-pressed to collect a bounty in trade for Alex Smith

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The last three times the Kansas City Chiefs traded for a starting quarterback, they parted with something of value in return. They gave up a pair of second-round draft picks for Alex Smith in 2013, a second-rounder for Matt Cassel in 2009 and a first-round choice for Trent Green in 2001.
Now that it may soon be the Chiefs’ turn to deal a starting quarterback -- and one who was the NFL’s top-rated passer in 2017 -- their fans have a vision of a bounty that Kansas City would acquire for Smith, if in fact he is dealt this offseason.
That’s unlikely to happen for a variety of reasons, none of which has to do with the way Smith played in 2017. The price the Chiefs would eventually extract if they do trade Smith would revolve more around Smith’s age (he will be 34 in May), his contract (it expires at the end of the 2018 season), and the fact that a number of quarterbacks appear headed for the market in 2018.
The Chiefs could hold onto Alex Smith if they don't get an offer that moves the needle. AP Photo/Julie Jacobson Good old-fashioned economics -- supply and demand -- will ultimately keep the price down.
“That’s 100 percent true," former Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said. “When you look around the league, there are only about five or six landing spots and you have to realize some of those will be taken by draft picks. There are three or four quarterbacks that a lot of people feel are first-round guys. That cuts into the chairs at the table and [Washington’s] Kirk Cousins is going to get a seat at somebody’s table.
“So you’re talking about maybe two or three real possibilities at the most, and at that point, what leverage do the Chiefs have?"
Trades involving a starting quarterback don’t happen much. There have been three such trades in the past three years.
Two involved Sam Bradford. He went in 2016 from the Eagles to the Vikings for first- and fourth-round draft picks. Bradford was sent from the Rams to the Eagles the previous year for another quarterback, Nick Foles. Two draft picks went to the Rams and one to Philadelphia to balance the trade.
Jimmy Garoppolo was traded last year from the Patriots to the 49ers for a second-round draft pick.
The price the Eagles received in the most recent Bradford trade would seem to be the most applicable to what the Chiefs might be able to extract in return for Smith. But a number of factors were in play for that trade that won’t be in any Smith deal.
Bradford was 28 at the time of the trade with two seasons remaining on his contract. The Vikings paid him $25 million over those two seasons. Smith is scheduled to make $17 million next season in salary and bonuses.
The Vikings were also desperate at the time of the trade, shortly before the start of the regular season. They had lost their starter, Teddy Bridgewater, to an injury and paid a premium to acquire a replacement at that time of year.
The Garoppolo trade for a second-round pick wasn’t friendly for the Chiefs in this case.
“The Jimmy Garoppolo trade just reset the market," Dominik said. “You throw in [Smith’s] age and the length of his contract and the salary-cap aspect and it’s easy to say, ‘Well, if Garoppolo is a 2, then Alex Smith is a 3 or a 4 because he’s a 30-something-year-old with a high salary and I might have him for only one year.’ There’s no reason to give a premium pick for that."
In their recent trades for starting quarterbacks, the Chiefs identified those players as targets early in the process, perhaps increasing the price. Green had a previous association with the Chiefs’ coach at the time, Dick Vermeil, and Cassel with the general manager, Scott Pioli.
Green (30) and Cassel (26) were younger than Smith is now. Smith was 29 when acquired by the Chiefs.
This year, at least four quarterbacks probably will be drafted in the first round: Wyoming’s Josh Allen, USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield. Several veteran quarterbacks who started at some point in 2017 also could be available. That list includes Bradford, Cousins, Miami’s Jay Cutler, Minnesota’s Case Keenum, Buffalo’s Tyrod Taylor, and Josh McCown of the New York Jets.

The supply may well outpace the demand, which is why Dominik said he believes the Chiefs are better off keeping Smith than dumping him for whatever they can get.
“I wouldn’t think the Chiefs would have a lot of leverage in this case," he said. “I wouldn’t be too motivated to do anything if I was the Chiefs.

“You never know. Maybe the value of Alex Smith actually increases once training camp starts. Maybe some team loses its quarterback in camp or early in the season and they’ll give you more than what you could get now."
Keeping Smith might not be practical. Patrick Mahomes looked like he would be ready to take over from Smith. The Chiefs also desperately need the $17 million in salary-cap room they would create by trading Smith.
“If they really want to trade him, I think it’s a mid-round pick," Dominik said. “Maybe a team like Jacksonville might want him and give a third- or a fourth-round pick, something in that range. But not a 1. That won’t happen. It’s not because he’s Alex Smith. I’m not beating up Alex Smith here.
“They’re just going to be hard-pressed to do better than that because of the circumstances."

Linebackers coach Gary Gibbs won’t be returning to the team, and former assistant head coach Brad Childress and special projects coach Tommy Brasher have told the Chiefs they will retire.

Here are the changes for the 2018 season:

Mike Kafka was promoted from offensive quality control to quarterbacks coach
Mark DeLeone was promoted from assistant linebackers coach to inside linebackers coach
Mike Smith was promoted from assistant defensive line coach to outside linebackers coach
Corey Matthaei moved from assistant quarterbacks coach to assistant offensive line coach
Joe Bleymaier was promoted from offensive quality control to pass game analyst/assistant quarterbacks coach
Terry Bradden was promoted from a defensive assistant to defensive quality control

The Chiefs also hired two new coaches:

Jay Valai to defensive quality control
David Girardi to offensive quality control

The Kansas City Chiefs should absolutely pursue Aqib Talib

We don’t know how seriously the Denver Broncos are trying to move Aqib Talib, but we do know that the Chiefs should welcome him to KC with open arms.

Aqib Talib makes total sense on the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs. No qualifiers needed.
On today’s Roughing the Kicker, we’ll look at the ins and outs of his recent performances, his age, his pairing with Marcus Peters, his salary and every other aspect of what he can bring to the table, but we need to start there. With the fact that he would unequivocally make this defense better. Now for the breakdowns.

The Broncos could end up ultimately cutting Talib altogether, which would make him a free agent. But I wouldn’t hesitate to offer the Broncos a low draft pick, if I were running the Chiefs, to take him before he hits free agency.

In 2018, Talib is set to make $12 million, with a million guaranteed. In 2019, he’ll make $8 million, none of it guaranteed. Even if the Talib experiment fails, on his current contract, Talib would be extremely easy to part with. This isn’t a Tamba Hali contract where you’re betting millions on an aging player staying healthy and at the top of their game. This is very, very manageable.
This move would also allow you to draft and develop a young cornerback while still having a lockdown corner opposite Marcus Peters for the next two years, and potentially beyond. Pro Football Focus ranked Aqib Talib as the 15th-best cornerback in football last year. Marcus Peters was 17th. This secondary would become impossible to navigate.
I’m not worried about locker room drama or Talib snatching Michael Crabtree’s chain. I’m worried about a secondary that can’t stop Marcus Mariota, much less Tom Brady.
Also on today’s show, we discuss the Chiefs’ assistant coaching changes, the idea of Alex Smith going to Denver and Bob Sutton’s’ continued employment. Also, Dr. Professor joins the show to share some sage Chiefs wisdom.

QB Alex Smith and Washington now have reached an agreement on a new four-year contract extension, per sources. Smith, who had one year left on his contact, tied to Washington for next five seasons. Smith gets long-term deal from Washington that Cousins could not.

On the agreement in principle. Alex Smith will average $23.5 million per year in new money on the extension and $70 million in guarantees. Nobody will be able to review that contract for awhile because officially there is no contract

The #Chiefs traded QB Alex Smith to the #Redskins for a 2018 third-round pick and a player to be named tomorrow, sources say. Solid return, regardless of who the player is.
