Default WebOS Dead - AKA "the touchpad thread"

http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/h...webos-devices/

HP just basically killed WebOS and is considering spinning off their entire personal computer group. Ouch.

Quote:
"In addition, HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward."

Meh, it was a dying doe anyway. They basically bought Palm's intellectual property for $1.2bil.

I knew it was coming, but it still sucks. I love how easy WebOS phones are to use and get the hang of. I can't stand navigating around in my wife's HTC Hero and just about every other Android phone I've messed with is just as annoying. Guess I better start changing my mind about them.

The interface was a cool balance between the simplicity/childness of the iphone and the complexity of the widget but it never had a home. With Palm the hardware let it down and it was late to the game. With HP they just didnt do shit, they dragged their feet and then killed it in a month.

I almost feel like you deserve it if you bought one. Who the fuck thought they were actually going to get anyone to develop for it? Its a single maker platform with no market share and no idea how they were going to maximize its use (printers, GTFO).

They just dropped the price on the 16Gb to $99 in Canada and on a few other sites. Be looking for this change tomorrow or over the weekend at local stores. Not a bad tablet for $99.

I tried to find one today. No one has them in stock locally I can find or the managers said not to sell so they could send them back to hp. For 99 bucks it would have been nice to just have. Can't seem to find one online either.

It'll be in stores only. I got a 32gb for $149 but supplies are VERY limited. Also, there will be a way to root it to run Android Honeycomb. Yes, I'm excited.

Oh, and early buyers will get a refund for their touchpads.

Even if they can port android over that isn't a bad price for a browser/media player.

Damn, I was thinking one of these would make a great media player/internet browser for that price. Would have been perfect for my dad.

Also, it appears WebOS itself might not be dead, its just that HP gave up on making WebOS devices. That means in the future they could still license it to other people to make or open up the code. Then webos could be ported from another device.
