Default All New KIA Sportage

Though the first-generation Kia Sportage stuck around for a whopping eleven years, its successor was on the market for six years before the current model was introduced in 2010. At that rate, Kia is likely to reveal the fourth-gen model some time next year, and that is precisely what we seem to have here in this latest batch of spy shots.

Spotted undergoing testing at the Hyundai-Kia Technical Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, this pair of Sportage prototypes are wearing a lot of camouflage to keep us from extrapolating too much about their design. Still, we're expecting much of the KX3 concept to make it onto the production Sportage as Kia moves its crossover design language in one direction and the sedans in another. Look for a wider, lower grille, wrap-around headlamps and more prominent fog lights to characterize the front end, new LED taillights around back and a silhouette similar to the current model's in between.

Expect a range of gasoline and diesel engines to be offered in markets around the world, from 130 horsepower up to 250, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Equipment can be anticipated to be upgraded inside as well, bringing to bear the resources of what has become one of the world's largest automakers.

2016 Kia Sportage spied near the Arctic Circle

2016 / 2017 Kia Sportage spy photo / Automedia

The 2016 / 2017 Kia Sportage has been spied undergoing testing near the Arctic Circle.
Looking instantly recognizable, the crossover has a familiar shape but adopts a new front fascia with revised headlights and a more upright grille. We can also see longer rear doors and a heavily camouflaged rear end with wraparound taillights.
Under the hood, we can expect an assortment of new and improved petrol and diesel engines. Nothing is official but options could include a 1.2-liter T-GDi four-cylinder with approximately 132 bhp (98 kW), a 1.6-liter T-GDI with 204 bhp (152 kW) and 265 Nm (195 lb-ft) of torque and a 2.0-liter T-GDI with 245 bhp (182 kW).

New Sportage to Have Modern & Sport Look?

With the latest spy pictures we showed you yesterday, we saw again the interior of the new Sportage, but at the same time, we realized that the model under the camo has something different than we already saw in all the pictures we received from South Korea.
And yeah, the difference are in the fog lights area, where the Korean model was scooped with an air intake followed with the 4 ice-cubed LED lights, while the European model spotted yesterday use a fog headlight and bigger air intake.

So, if you can remember that Kia launched the new K5 (called as Optima in overseas markets) under two different labels, called as MX (Modern Extrem) & SX (Sport Extreme), we are thinking about if Kia will use the same solution for the 2016 Sportage.
Apart from that, the more I look this new Sportage, the more I think will be so similar to the KX3 front than a Kia Sorento. Just look to the small grille compared with the Sorento’s bigger grille and similar to the KX3. That’s why I decided to create this picture to clarify more the look on the next-gen Sportage. Also the headlight are so similiar to the KX3, combined with that 3-led light we saw on the Optima and the chromed bars under the fog lights closely to what we saw in the Rio facelift.
What do you think? Could Kia succeed again with the new Sportage, or could fail with this new reinterpretation of a total hit in terms of sales and brand image achieved by Kia since they launched the current Sportage?

Scooped: 2016 Sportage Interior Undisguised

Our spy photographer sent us a few minutes ago a new photoset including interior picture, plus exterior shots of the 2016 Sportage spotted in Europe.

After we shared with you the first interior picture (below), now we want to share with you another picture of the interior (above) of the 2016 Sportage while the car is rolling around Europe. At this time, this european 2016 Sportage won’t show the ice-cubed LED lights on the bumpers, while at the same time is using those tridimensional lights launched on the new generation K5-Optima. The rear end is the part that is expected to suffer less changes, only with a little facelift including new LED tailights, but thank to what we can saw, with the same base design, only a new graphics (the indicator, parking and fog lights are practically the same as the current model).

Continue reading about the All-New 2016 Sportage: Looking at the 2016 Kia Sportage interior, the steering wheel we notice is identical to the All-New Optima. All the steering wheel buttons remain the same such as the start and end call, volumen up and down, options, and at the other side the cruise control as well at the proximity sensor which is now becoming common to all cars.
The dashboard design in the 2016 Sportage is very similar to the latest Sorento & Sedona (the air vents looks closer to the Sorento, but at this time the screen hasn’t hover efect, and are inserted into the dashboard like in the Sedona), while the dashboard had a 7″ inch touchscreen. Under camouflage we can see a line that crosses all the interior and downs into like a handgrip, could be covered by leather.

As we knew, Kia will reveal the fourth generation Sportage in September, while the engine line-up, 7-speed dual clutch transmission will be available at launch besides a choice of gasoline direct injection and diesel engines, plus small turbo engines. In the diesel side, improved 1.7 CRDi 131 hp could be the most desired into European market. About the petrol engines, the 1.6 GDi will be the base engine, while a turbo variant will offer 185 hp for European spec model. About an all-new small turbo engine, the 1.2 T-GDi delivering 132 hp is not confirmed yet.
South Korea line-up will be reduced to 1.7 CRDi available with 7-speed DCT & 2.0 CRDi diesel engines, plus a 2.0 T-GDi engine.

2016 Kia Sportage teased, debuts at IAA

2016 Kia Sportage teaser

Sharing platform with the new Tucson

Kia has released a trio of teaser images previewing the all-new Sportage set to premiere on September 17 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
These rather cartoonish official renders provide a first glimpse at Kia's overhauled fourth generation of the compact crossover which is set to adopt a fresh look both inside and out. The company's corporate "tiger nose" grille now sits lower and we also notice the shape of the headlights has been extensively modified with the ice cube LED daytime running lights incorporated within the cluster.
There's also some front and rear aluminum underbody protection, sleek taillights which appear to be interconnected through a red bar, along with a roof-mounted spoiler and the typical oversized alloy wheels automakers prefer to use on official teasers.
As far as the interior is concerned, it will be a major departure from the outgoing model and will mix up bits and pieces from the bigger Sorento but also from the new Optima mid-size sedan. The attached teaser shows some body-hugging seats, metallic accents, flat-bottomed steering wheel and a large touchscreen display along with red ambient lighting, an automatic transmission and a large central armrest.
Kia will likely show us the 2016 Sportage in the following weeks before bringing to IAA while sales will likely kick off before the end of the year.

2016 Kia Sportage spied without any camouflage [video]

2016 Kia Sportage

Debuts September 15

[update] We managed to find two live shots, one of which is showing the front end.
The fourth generation Kia Sportage has been caught on camera without any sort of disguise.
This is by far our best look at Kia's all-new compact crossover as a pre-production prototype was recently filmed performing final testing rounds and as you can see it was camo-free. The video comes only a day after Kia released a trio of teaser images of its new Sportage which will be based on the new generation Hyundai Tucson.
We only get to see the rear end and side profile which both look significantly sportier compared to the outgoing model while from yesterday's teaser we learned the front end will also be a major departure compared to the outgoing model and is set to employ a lower tiger nose grille, aluminum underbody protection and reshaped headlights incorporating LED ice cube daytime running lights which will likely be available only on the upper-spec versions.
As for the interior, Kia promises the 2016 Sportage will have the "most refined high-quality cabin yet" and will blend parts from the bigger Sorento with those from the new Optima mid-size sedan.
Since it will share its platform with the Tucson, expect the new Sportage to come with several engines, including a 135 PS 1.6-liter normally aspirated unit also available in a turbo version with 176 PS (129 kW). On the diesel side there will be a 1.7-liter CRDi with 115 PS (85 kW) along with a bigger 2.0-liter available with 136 PS & 184 PS. FWD will be standard but at an addition cost clients will be able to specify the compact crossover with an optional AWD setup. Gearbox choices will be limited to a six-speed manual, six-speed automatic and an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Taking into account a public debut is set for September 15 at IAA, don't be too surprised if Kia will show us the new Sportage before the end of this month especially since they don't even bother camouflaging their prototypes anymore.

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

2016 Kia Sportage first official images leaked

2016 Kia Sportage leaked official image

Online debut set for next Tuesday

Official images with the fourth generation Kia Sportage have hit the web.
Earlier this week we posted several fully revealing spy shots of the all-new compact crossover from Kia, and now we managed to obtain access to official images courtesy of TheKoreanCarBlog. While the shape of the car has remained pretty much the same, the design - elaborated in Europe - is actually quite different compared to the outgoing model and makes the car look bolder and more dynamic. We don't have official images of the interior so far, but in the aforementioned spy shots we saw a blend between the Sorento and Optima to create what Kia is describing their "most refined" cabin ever.
The underpinnings are already known since the new Sportage will use the same platform, engines and gearboxes as the latest Hyundai Tucson. As a consequence, there will be a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 135 PS in naturally aspirated guise and 176 PS when turbocharged. Diesel units will include a 1.7-liter CRDi with 115 PS and a larger 2.0-liter rated at 136 PS and 184 PS. These will work with six-speed manual, six-speed automatic and seven-speed dual clutch gearboxes sending power to the front wheels as standard or to an AWD setup available at an additional cost.
We will get to see the new Kia Sportage in the metal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September, but an online reveal is programmed for August 25.

Kia Sportage first official images released

2016 Kia Sportage

No tech details available

Following an endless string of spy photos and leaked images, the 2016 Kia Sportage has finally gone official.
Set to make its global debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show on September 15, the fourth generation of the model features a bold, “progressive design”, inspired by the “contrast of smooth and sharp shapes found on some of the most iconic modern fighter jets.”
The most notable changes are focused at the front, where the headlamps are no longer integrated with the grille, but instead are sweeping back. The look is dominated by the two grilles, resulting in “a more imposing appearance and a more stable-looking stance.”
At the back, there’s a pair of 2013 Kia Provo Concept-inspired lights joined by a strip that runs the width of the rear. The turn signals and reversing lights are separated, relocated lower down.

Official technical details are not available at the moment, but these are expected to come with the car’s debut, so stay tuned.

Kia Debuts The All-New Sportage Before Its Frankfurt Launch

As we inch closer to the start of the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) the automakers are starting to come out of the woodwork to show off their latest and greatest wares.
The latest to do so? Kia.

Kia will be rolling out its all-new Sportage to the masses.

If you ask me, this is an interesting move mostly due to the fact it is a Korean auto manufacturer. Typically a lot of roll outs are held closer to home field, but I assume Kia will be taking its Sportage to the European market.

I mean, just look at it. While we may only have three official images, this thing is looking pretty damn decent.

Go Kia!

**Scope out the company-issued release that waxes poetic about the all-new Sporage's design, below!

Kia's press release follows:

FIRST EXTERIOR IMAGES OF ALL-NEW SPORTAGE

All-new Sportage to be unveiled at IAA Frankfurt
New "face" is biggest design change
European Design Centre led styling
Kia Motors has today revealed the first official exterior images of the all-new Kia Sportage, featuring a dynamic and strong new design. The all-new Sportage will make its global debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show on 15 September 2015.

Entering its fourth-generation, the all-new Kia Sportage features a bold, progressive design, with the vehicle's designers creating a sense of power and agility from every angle. Echoing the contrast of smooth and sharp shapes found on some of the most iconic modern fighter jets, the Sportage creates visual harmony out of the tension between sharp, defined feature lines and smooth surfacing.

The 'face' of the all-new Sportage represents the biggest change to the car's design, with the car's headlamps no longer integrated with the grille for the new model, instead sweeping back along the outer edges of the more sharply-detailed bonnet and bolder wheel arches. Immediately recognisable as a Kia, the Sportage's lower, wider 'tiger-nose' grille adds more volume to the lower half of the Sportage's face, resulting in a more imposing appearance and a more stable-looking stance.

The all-new Sportage is characterised by its sportier, more raked profile. From the side, the all-new Sportage retains the swept-back silhouette of the outgoing model, with a roofline that tapers slightly towards the rear of the car, longer front overhangs, shorter rear overhangs and longer wheelbase. Smooth bodywork, bolder wheel arches and sharp lines endow the Sportage with a more dynamic, muscular look.

At the rear, the horizontal forms and surface volume emphasise the car's width and give the compact SUV a more stable appearance. Inspired by the 2013 Kia Provo concept car, the slim combination lamps are joined by a strip that runs the width of the rear, while turn signals and reversing lights are separated, relocated lower down to add more visual weight and a greater sense of stability to the lower half of the car.

The design of the new Sportage has been led by Kia's European design studio in Frankfurt, Germany, with input from the brand's Namyang, Korea and Irvine, California design centres.

Kia reveals interior and technical specs of 2016 Sportage ahead of Frankfurt launch

2016 Kia Sportage

Wheelbase extended by 30 mm

Kia has released a trio of images with the new Sportage's interior, along with comprehensive details regarding the car's underpinnings.
The fourth generation is billed as an all-new model and compared to the one it replaces it's 40mm longer (at 4480mm) and has a 30mm longer wheelbase (at 2670mm) while the height has remained the same at 1635mm. Its new body is also more aerodynamically efficient as drag has been reduced from the previous 0.35 to 0.33 Cd thanks to the revised undercover and the new bumpers. Kia also fiddled around with the overhangs by extending the front by 20mm and shortening the rear by 10mm to create a more raked silhouette.
Due to the model's increased proportions, trunk capacity has grown considerably from 465 liters to 503 liters and they also bumped the fuel tank's size from 58 to 62 liters. Alloy wheel options are vast and range in size from 16 to 19 inches, including an exclusive 19-inch wheel design for the newly added GT Line which adopts a sportier design with ice cube LED fog lamps, dual exhaust mufflers, metal-like underbody diffuser and a sharper suspension setup.
The 2016 Kia Sportage will be available with a 1.6-liter GDI engine developing 132 PS and 161 Nm of torque along with a turbocharged version bumping the output to 177 PS and 265 Nm. There's also a more economical 115 PS 1.7-liter CRDi turbodiesel and an upgraded iteration of the 2.0-liter offered with 136 PS & 373 Nm and 184 PS & 400 Nm. Depending on engine choice, Kia is offering a six-speed manual transmission, an automatic and their new seven-speed dual-clutch 'box.
Stepping inside the cabin, it has received more soft-touch materials and larger 7- and 8-inch touchscreen displays for the infotainment system working together with the standard 6-speaker, 160-watt sound system or the optional 8-speaker, 320-watt JBL setup. Thanks to the car's extended proportions, the interior offers an extra 5mm of headroom in the front and 16mm at the back while legroom has increased by 19mm front and 7mm rear. At an additional cost, the Sportage can be configured with heated front seats with 10-way power control for the driver's seat and 8-way for the passenger . The rear seats can be reclined in one of the 17 available positions (from 23 to 37 degrees) and these too can also be heated for greater comfort.
Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels have been lowered and according to Kia the new Sportage has less cabin noise than most compact crossovers. It's also very safe as it comes packed with a plethora of airbags and numerous systems like Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, High Beam Assist, Speed Limit Information Function, Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Following its world premiere later this month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the fourth-gen Kia Sportage will go on sale in Europe in the first quarter of 2016.
More details can be accessed in the press release section below.

We have a current gen and I like it. This new one though causes some mixed emotions. Interior looks great, like the back (minus their continued use of the turn signals in the bumper) and side profile. But that front view makes it look kind of "Eww."

All-New Kia Sportage Design Story

The Kia Sportage is back with an all-new model, five years after the launch of the previous generation vehicle.

First unveiled at this year’s Frankfurt International Motor Show, the all-new Sportage instantly caught the attention of many car lovers with its powerful look and improved features.
The development project of the 4th generation Sportage was initiated back in April 2012, with involvement of global Kia design teams in the US, Germany and Korea.
Check out the interesting behind-the-scenes stories of the all-new Sportage design, shared by actual Kia exterior and interior designers, thanks to our friends at Kia Buzz.

Previous design scale model
What do you think about this side line going up at the rear window? “Designing the all-new Sportage was a great challenge for Kia designers,” said the chief of the exterior design team, Moon-Hyo Yoon. “We aimed to bring its design to a whole new level while maintaining the already-perfected design identity of the 3rd generation Sportage.”
Kia Sportage Render

After endless hours of discussion and sketches, Kia designers decided on the design keywords “Sporty & Powerful Energy”. As a result, the newest generation Sportage has received horizontal streamlines on the side which maximize the sturdy and strong sensation of the chassis. With its rigorous body shape and powerful details, the design of the Sportage was taken to a whole new level.
Kia Sportage Sketches
Kia’s Exterior Design Team boldly placed the headlamps above the grille for an identity that is more progressive and aggressive than most SUVs. The rear combination and front fog lamps also add a futuristic touch to an already strong design.
The underlying theme for the all-new Sportage’s interior was innovation. “We aimed to create a luxurious yet comfortable interior that perfectly fit both urban and outdoor settings,” explained Chi-Young Kim of the Interior Design Team.

The inside of the car focused on providing the most driver-friendly experience in the segment. Compared to its predecessor, the new Sportage has more personalized touches, ranging from a conveniently organized display zone, heightened visibility of the cluster and an optimum AVN angle for the driver to easily access controls. Not only that, both the front and back seat heights were readjusted and a fold-and-dive function was added to the back seats for the first time in a Sportage.
The carefully selected range of 8 colors are yet another unique characteristic of the all-new Sportage. Ranging from urban-style Cherry Black to sparkly Mercury Blue, the exterior colors were created to represent the young and outdoorsy feeling of Kia’s newest compact SUV.

All-new Sportage in Patina Gold
The newly introduced Patina Gold and Fiery Red colors were inspired by nature, and the Kia Color Team strived to create a visual sensation by balancing metallic glimmer with semi-bright hues.

2017 Kia Sportage arrives in Los Angeles with two different engines

2017 Kia Sportage

2017 Kia Sportage arrives in Los Angeles with two different engines

Kia has staged the North American debut of the 2017 Sportage at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Looking virtually identical to the European variant that was introduced at Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year, the US-spec model has an has an evolutionary design with a “tiger-nose” grille, a sloping roof and a thick rear pillar. The entry-level model isn't terribly exciting but the range-topping SX Turbo boasts HID headlights, LED fog lamps, faux-metal skid plates, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
The interior is a tad plain but it comes equipped with soft-touch materials, metallic accents, and a five-inch color touchscreen. The mid-level Sportage EX adds leather upholstery and a UVO3 infotainment system with a seven-inch display with Android Auto/ Apple CarPlay compatibility.
If that's not luxurious enough, the SX Turbo has a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, piano black trim, and aluminum pedals. The model also boasts an infotainment system with an 8-inch display and standard GPS navigation.
The Sportage LX and EX are powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 181 bhp (134 kW) and 175 lb-ft (237 Nm) of torque. However, upgrading to the SX Turbo rewards buyers with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that cranks out 241 bhp (179 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque.
Both engines are connected to a six-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system.

2017 Kia Sportage First Drive

Look past that funny face and Kia's new Sportage is a well-rounded, competent crossover.

It's hard to get excited about most mainstream crossovers, but the truth is this is one of the hottest segments of the market right now. The automotive space is saturated with a glut of these profit-making, two-box, semi-practical, soft-roading vehicles, and the tide isn't likely to abate soon. At first blush, Kia's redesigned 2017 Sportage isn't the most eye-catching of new products, but it's poised to do very well in the ongoing CUV wars.

Progress in this kind of battle is often measured in inches of space, and the 2017 Sportage grows both inside and out. The new Kia measures the same 73 inches wide as its predecessor, but it gains 1.2 inches on the wheelbase, and 1.6 inches in overall length. There's more room overall for passengers, and there's 18-percent greater cargo space in back. Plus, the luggage floor can be moved down into a lower position to make more vertical space when needed.

The Sportage was penned by renowned designer Peter Schreyer (he of first-gen Audi TT fame), but the end result is a bulbous-looking crossover, especially when viewed from the front – it's like a chipmunk with too many acorns in its cheeks. The "tiger-nose" grille – a hallmark of Schreyer – was moved up to accommodate the "ice-cube" fog lamps, while the headlights sweep back along the sides of the car. The A and C pillars are thinner, allowing occupants better visibility from inside the car, but from the outside, the rear three-quarter view looks blocky and cut up. The rear doesn't seem to match the rest of the car, either – it's more svelte and understated.

Looking past its exterior design, the new Sportage is marginally, uh, sportier, thanks to a new, lighter, stiffer body, a redesigned suspension, and new engine tuning. Kia is mostly chasing improved fuel efficiency with its latest powertrain updates, as both engines have slightly lower outputs than their predecessors but have marginal improvements in fuel economy. The entry-level 2.4-liter inline-four (same as the Optima and Sorento) puts out 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque – decreases of only 1 hp and 2 lb-ft – and can be had with front- or all-wheel drive. Step up to the top-of-the-line SX Turbo and you get a 2.0-liter turbo-four that puts out 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque (that's 20 hp and 9 lb-ft less than before). Kia estimates the 2.4/FWD combination will return 23 miles per gallon city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined, while the 2.0T/AWD will score 20/23/21.

With front-wheel drive, it's possible to get the Sportage's rear end to unset itself on a winding road – it's not our first choice. Instead, the Magna Dynamax all-wheel-drive system electronically senses the road and anticipates slide events and can brake individual wheels to prevent or mitigate traction loss. The system can push as much as 100 percent of the power to front or rear wheels as needed, and there's even a 50/50 locking differential – you know, for those times when you have to scale a small snowbank to get to soccer practice.

We ventured down a light off-road path around Julian, CA, and found it easy to get a good sense of the surface beneath the tires, while still enjoying a relatively comfortable ride on paves surfaces (though the hard, flat seats do leave a lot to be desired).

The Sportage comes with Eco, Normal, and Sport driving modes, and while suspension dynamics don't change between the settings, throttle response and steering weight are altered. In Eco, the throttle is numb, the steering is incredibly vague, and the six-speed automatic transmission shifts as early as possible (fuel economy!). In Normal, you get slightly more responsive acceleration and a touch more weight in the steering – here, you don't feel a constant lack of power, and for standard daily driving, this mode offers a good balance of feedback and comfort. In Sport, the throttle is, of course, more lively, and the transmission happily holds gears higher up in the rev range. The steering becomes more direct and there's more weight, but it's not going to wow you with its impeccable response.

Inside, the Sportage gets a more luxurious interior and a suite of (optional) technology. Softer touch materials that look like leather, even if upon closer inspection they aren't, are littered throughout the cabin. A full leather interior becomes available at the mid-level EX range. The new Sportage is quieter, too – Kia increased the amount of noise reduction material in the wheel wells and inside the cabin. It's not Lexus quiet by any means, but the new Sportage is a bit more hushed on the road than the previous model.

The UVO infotainment system is fairly intuitive to use, and bright enough to read easily, even in the California desert sun. In the base Sportage LX you only get a five-inch screen, but up-level EX and SX Turbo models get a seven-inch headunit. It's simple to move through menus on the UVO system, but from the passenger seat it is downright difficult to reach. You can't input a navigation destination while already underway – this, and other settings, have to be done while the vehicle is in Park. Between those lockouts, plus the driver-angled position of the screen, passengers are pretty much useless in terms of accessing UVO's functionality. Kia is also still sorting out details of how to roll out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but assured us that both will be available in the new 2017 Sportage eventually. That said, early buyers might have to take their cars back to the dealer for an update in order to get this technology.

You can buy a new Sportage with forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot detection, lane departure warning (with an annoyingly persistent alarm that thankfully you can turn off with a button on the dash), and rear cross traffic alert. Surprisingly, there is no option for adaptive cruise control. Kia executives indicated that integrating the cameras into the drive system is more cost prohibitive than they would like. This is a hugely popular feature these days, and it's a curious omission – many competitors offer this tech, including the segment-leading Honda CR-V.

The 2017 Kia Sportage might just be another new crossover, but it's poised to do well within its class. For one, at $22,990, it offers a low cost of entry into this highly popular and competitive segment – even a loaded one will slot right around $35,000. It's a little awkward to look at, but it's at least distinctive – it doesn't just blend in with other CUVs, especially from up front. Overall, the 2017 Sportage easy to like and pleasant to use. That's hardly exciting, but in this segment, that's good enough.

Facelifted Kia Sportage Coming With 48V Mild-Hybrid Powertrain

Kia is preparing the Sportage for its mid-life facelift in Europe, which apparently will include more than just a few visual touch-ups.
The Korean carmaker is planning to debut their new 48V mild-hybrid technology with the facelifted Sportage and the all-new Ceed, which is set for a reveal at the Geneva Motor Show.
Meeting the latest emission regulations is the key factor behind this decision but Kia believes the demand for such systems is only going to get stronger in Europe.
Visually the updated Kia Sportage is going to be adapted to the company’s latest design language. That involves moving the DRLs into the headlights as we can see from our spy shots while the front bumper will also gain a sharper look.
The changes on the rear end are expected to be smaller. A pair of redesigned LED lights and a new bumper, along with new trim pieces are expected in order to make the Sportage look more modern.
As for the rest of the engine range, there isn’t much information about what’s going to be changed so far. The current Euro-spec Sportage is offered with a range of two petrol and three diesel options.
The interior is expected to feature a better infotainment system, perhaps with a bigger display, while the list of active safety systems might gain a few new members. After all, having a 48V electrical system opens the way for semi-autonomous functions too.

Kia Sportage Facelift Spied Up Close

The 2019 Kia Sportage is ready for its Facelift upgrade, and today we came back with new pictures courtesy of our friend SHM’s Studio.

The 2019 Kia Sportage is currently on its fourth generation and judging from the units sold in 2016 by 81,066 units and in 2017 by 72824 units these new updates will give a refresh look its needing.
You can expect a new design on the bumper but unfortunately due to the heavy camouflage we cannot see it but something we can tell is the new design on the headlight and fog lights. The fog light no longer has the “ice cube” design, instead Kia is opting for a more subtle one lens and a chrome trim around it and as far as the headlight the “ice cube” design might have gone inside it as a DRL right between.

On the sides, as expected, there isnt much change on the Sportage but you can probably count on new alloy wheels design and possibly new colors to give new life to the facelift.
At the back of the Sportage is where things gets more interesting, where you can see a complete new design of a bunch of leds lighting up the taillight but compared to the previous model these just go straight and no longer has the 3 lines curved downwards but just like the previous model the brakes will be connected on the middle section but it’s hidden by the camouflage. As far as the bumper, you can also look for a new design but again the heavy camouflage is doing its job by covering it.
Unfortunately we don’t have any close up pictures of the interior but you can probably expect an upgraded interior and infotainment. Some new safety features will be added as well to keep the Sportage. We don’t have information for powertrain on this Facelift Sportage but something that we do know is Kia plans to produce a 48V mild-hybrid system (just like the Kia Ceed), continuing its plan to improve fuel economy and reduce its CO2 print on earth.

Kia Sportage Facelift Spied-up Close in South Korea

Displayed at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the last generation of South Korean carmaker mid-size SUV, the Kia Sportage, has enjoyed a good level of sales locally and overseas, from US to Europe, but not at the level at the previous generation.

A few weeks ago, we had spotted the 2018 Kia Sportage facelift on the roads of Germany with a high level of camouflage while Kia will try to recover the sales lost in favor of the Tucson. Also we got a render from Kksstudio, where we can imagine how the refreshed SUV will look, and today we found more pictures that show us for example a new LED tailight stripe.

Kia will use the new X-LED firm on the headlights like the ones launched on the Forte & Ceed.
At the back of the Sportage is where things gets more interesting, where you will see a complete new design of a bunch of leds lighting up the taillight but compared to the previous model these just go straight and no longer has the 3 lines curved downwards but just like the previous model the brakes will be connected on the middle section but it’s hidden by the camouflage. The front grille and headlights will also go through a nip and tuck.

Kia’s compact SUV is going under the knife as the Sportage has been caught on camera preparing for a mid-cycle refresh. It appears we could be looking at the GT Line version judging by the funky two-tone large alloy wheels and the dual exhaust tips, but one can never be too sure when talking about prototypes. Whatever trim level this is, the work-in-progress vehicle allows us to catch a glimpse at the changes the Sportage will be going through for 2019.
Starting at the front, the corporate “tiger nose” grille seems to have a slightly different glossy black pattern, though you have to really pay attention to notice the changes. The headlights appear to be new and incorporate those four-point LED “ice cube” lights some might say were taken straight from a Porsche. Kia’s plastic surgeons are also giving the front bumper a nip and tuck since there seems to be a full-width horizontal bar that goes from one corner to the other. The shape of the fog lights will also be changed, but nothing to write home about.

Things get a bit more interesting at the back where we can easily observe the new LED graphics of the taillights. These make the 2019 Sportage look more modern and chances are the clusters will once again be interconnected through a light bar on the trunk lid. The bumper is also being updated considering the housing of the lower lights seems to have changed.

Although there’s a lot of fabric over the dashboard, we are not expecting any big changes to occur inside the cabin. It seems unlikely the refreshed compact SUV will get a tablet-style infotainment system like the new Ceed – and we’re sure this will come as good news to some people. The roll cage or whatever that is behind the front seats of the prototype obviously won't be on the production.

The revised Kia Sportage could debut in the second half of the year and has already been confirmed to receive mild hybrid 48-volt technology developed to drive down CO2 emissions and lower fuel consumption.

Kia hopping on the 48-volt ultra-mild hybrid bandwagon

It first launches on diesels in Europe

Kia has announced that it will join an expanding line of automakers, including Audi, Ram, Volvo and others, adding ultra-mild 48-volt hybrid systems to their engines. The system works like other systems in that it has a combination starter and generator connected to the engine crank via a belt. It allows the engine to be shut off earlier than simply at a stop, and provides a bit of electrical assistance to reduce how much the engine has to work on takeoff.

The system will first be implemented in Europe with the Kia Sportage and with its diesel engine in 2018. In 2019, the Kia Ceed small car will also be offered with the system. Kia says the system will also appear on gasoline engines in the near future. However, a representative from Kia's U.S. branch wouldn't comment either way on whether the technology will come to America.

We think it's a pretty safe bet that we'll see the technology offered in the U.S. soon. Kia makes it clear that this system is designed to be easy to implement. It says there are hardly any packaging issues, usually putting the battery under the trunk floor, and the starter/generator motor doesn't typically require reworking the engine bay much. It also should work with rear-, front-, or all-wheel-drive layouts and with manual and automatic transmissions. If it were only going to be on diesel engines, we could see how Kia might not bring it, but since it will also be featured on gas engines, we're sure it will show up on our shores soon.

2019 Kia Sportage Facelift Spied Undisguised With Minor Styling Changes

\

The facelifted Kia Sportage has been spied undisguised at the Nürburgring.

Looking instantly recognizable, the updated model has been equipped with a new front fascia which features revised air intakes and a less rounded appearance. The crossover also has a new chrome bar, updated headlights and restyled fog lights.
The rear of the crossover largely carries over but a closer inspection reveals some subtle styling changes. The most noticeable differences are the new taillights and the removal of the thin chrome strip that used to connect them. Further below, we can see the rear bumper has been modified to separate the reflectors from the reverse lights.

The minor styling changes continue in the cabin as the Sportage has an updated infotainment system which is framed by a larger metallic bezel. Additional changes are hard to spot but it appears the model features revised switchgear.
As we reported earlier today, the 2019 Sportage will become the first Kia model to be offered with a new 48V mild-hybrid diesel powertrain. Dubbed EcoDynamics+, the powertrain will feature an undisclosed diesel engine, a mild-hybrid starter-generator and an additional 48-volt lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 0.46 kWh. The mild-hybrid starter-generator is connected to the diesel engine’s crankshaft by a belt and it can provide up to 13 hp (10 kW) of electric power assistance. The starter-generator also captures kinetic energy from deceleration and braking to recharge the lithium-ion battery.
The mild-hybrid powertrain will be debut in the European Sportage later this year and it will eventually be offered on the Ceed in 2019.
U.S. specifications remain unconfirmed but it’s possible that engine options will carryover. If this happens, we can expect an entry-level 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 181 hp (135 kW) and 175 lb-ft (237 Nm) of torque. Likewise, there could be a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder which produces up to 240 hp (179 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque.

2019 Kia Sportage Facelift Unveiled With Mild Hybrid Diesel Engine

The electrified 2.0-liter is joined by a new 1.6-liter billed as being Kia's cleanest diesel ever.

It was only last week when our spies caught on camera a camo-free prototype of the 2019 Sportage and now Kia has dropped the first official images and details about its updated compact crossover. As you would come to expect from a press image, the version depicted in the adjacent shots is the range-topping GT Line, sporting a slightly updated exterior design.

Perhaps the most obvious change is at the front where the Porsche-esque “ice cube” LED fog lights have been replaced by a different set as part of the reworked front bumper with large trapezoidal “air vents” shaped sort of like a pentagon. The four-point lighting motif hasn’t been dropped altogether as it can now be seen in the revamped headlights.

The corporate “tiger nose” grille of the GT Line version now features a slightly updated glossy finish with a “hot-stamped” look while below sits a mildly revised silver skid plate. There’s also a new prominent horizontal fin slicing the two air vents in half and extending onto the center of the bumper.

The side profile reveals a fresh wheel design for the 19-inch set exclusive to this trim level. Kia mentions it has created new alloys for all versions of the Sportage, ranging in size from 16 to 19 inches.

Moving at the back of the car, the updates are less obvious and nothing to write home about, but we do mention the discreetly tweaked taillights and a new silver skid plate.
Stepping inside the cabin, you’re being greeted by a new steering wheel and a modified instrument cluster. Kia is adding a new two-tone (black and grey) upholstery not just for the lesser versions, but also for the GT Line model in which the seats are clad in leather. The seats shown here are covered in the optional black leather with red contrasting accents.

By far the most important novelty is represented by the new four-cylinder EcoDynamics+ 2.0-liter “R” powertrain. It’s a four-cylinder turbodiesel featuring a mild-hybrid starter/generator unit and a 48-volt battery. Under the new and more stringent Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) regulations, it cuts CO2 emissions by as much as four percent.

You can say goodbye to the old 1.7-liter CRDi as Kia is replacing it with its new 1.6-liter U3 CRDI described as being the company’s cleanest diesel engine to date. It’s available either with 113 hp or 134 hp, with the high-power version offered with all-wheel drive and a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic transmission. This engine was launched earlier this year on the European-spec Optima where it replaced the same 1.7-liter unit.

Rounding off the updates is the inclusion of smart cruise control with stop & go functionality, Driver Attention Warning system detecting driver fatigue and inattentiveness, along with an Around View Monitor to help you out while parking. Depending on version, the 2019 Kia Sportage will be available in Europe with the firm’s latest 7-inch touchscreen or the new “frameless” 8-inch display.
Kia will kick off customer deliveries of the 2019 Sportage in Europe during the third quarter.
