Default Sherlock Holmes 3

Jude Law reveals the first story details for Sherlock Holmes 3. Even though Law will soon be seen in two huge blockbusters (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Captain Marvel), it was his partnership with Robert Downey Jr. back in 2009 that first brought him aboard franchise fare. It was then that he debuted as Dr. John Watson opposite Downey's Sherlock Holmes, and the chemistry between them spawned box office success and one immediate sequel in 2011. Seven years later, Sherlock Holmes 3 is just starting to make significant progress.

Law and Downey are confirmed to be returning for a third installment, but it's currently unknown if director Guy Ritchie will return too. Warner Bros. already has announced a 2020 release date for the sequel though, so the project is certainly making positive strides. The status of the script isn't exactly known, but now the co-star is starting to tease the direction of the story.

During an interview with EW, Law was asked about what's next for Holmes and Watson in Sherlock Holmes 3. He couldn't say too much at this juncture, but did reveal the pairing have experienced some level of separation. This means that whatever specifics Sherlock Holmes 3's story entails, a reunion of sorts will be in store.

We hope to propel the story forward. As always, the essence of the story is their codependency. We’re going to examine — since it’s been several years since we’ve seen them — we’re going to play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either.

Even though these details may not be as specific as some might hope for, it's the first general sense of the story fans have been provided. The last time audiences saw these characters, Holmes had faked his own death and used one of his camouflage suits to hide away in Watson's house. It was only when Watson finished his story that Holmes snuck over to the typewriter and put a question mark after "The End" - teasing a future adventure for the pairing that will finally come with Sherlock Holmes 3.

Bringing these characters back together after so much time apart in-universe should make for a fun storytelling element, but it's also a clever tactic considering the length between films. Nine years between franchise installments is almost unheard of now, so their reunion could be a great way to re-familiarize audiences with the duo. It allows for an easy way to explain why they haven't been on any major adventures in nearly a decade, and provides a fresh twist on their relationship. Watson presumably has just been spending time with his wife Mary (Kelly Reilly), while Holmes' whereabouts are the true wildcard. Whatever the case may be, seeing them together again in Sherlock Holmes 3 - and diving deeper into the relationship - is a great foundation for the story to be built on.

SHERLOCK HOLMES 3 Gets Delayed A Year; Will Debut December 2021

Bringing Downey Jr. back to a role he's been playing nearly as long as Tony Stark, Sherlock Holmes 3 will see both him and Law return as Holmes and Watson, in what is hopefully a sequel worth the wait.

It's no secret that Sherlock Holmes 3 has been in development hell for around a decade. With its last sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, hitting theaters late 2011, it seems as though Warner Bros. has had a hard time getting it off the ground.

Due to the business and scheduling conflicts of both Law and Downey, it has been a hot minute since they appeared as the big screen's iconic pair. Last year it was announced they are officially on board, but according to the latest reports, the wait has gotten a year longer.

According to Deadline, Sherlock Holmes 3 has changed its release date, shifting from a December 2020 debut to Christmas 2021. To be exact, the film will make its way into theaters December 22, 2021, in direct competition with Wicked, Hotel Transylvania 4 and Avatar 3.

The reasons behind the changes are unknown, but the news came with intriguing details. The studio has made way for an untitled live-action event film to replace Holmes' Christmas 2020 date - The Trench anyone?

Sherlock Holmes 3 Reportedly Takes Place in Old West San Francisco

A report suggests that Sherlock Holmes 3 will be set in San Francisco. Starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular genius detective and Jude Law as his ever-faithful assistant John Watson, Guy Ritchie's 2009 take on Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous character proved to be a smash at the box office. It also attracted positive reviews upon release for its more action-based approach to the Sherlock story, even if many fans preferred the small screen modernized version starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman that debuted the following year. Naturally, a sequel followed in the form of 2011's A Game Of Shadows, and the follow-up continued the success of its predecessor.

Plans for a third Sherlock Holmes movie were confirmed to be underway as early as October 2011, but the project failed to move beyond the script-writing stage. While cast and crew always spoke positively regarding a third installment, nailing down the film's story has seemingly remained the biggest stumbling block over the past 8 years. Finally, in 2018, Warner Bros. announced a December 2020 release date for Sherlock Holmes 3, however that has now been delayed by a further year.

While progress on Sherlock Holmes 3 continues, albeit at an agonizingly slow place, firm details remain scarce. However, a new report from HN Entertainment claims that the threequel will be set in Old West-era San Francisco. The piece goes on to highlight that filming is also due to begin in January 2020.

Since this report comes via an unnamed source, the news has to be placed firmly into the rumor category for now and, given the amount of rewrites and revisions Sherlock Holmes 3 has been subject to, the American setting could perhaps have been part of an earlier draft. Assuming the news is accurate however, moving Holmes and Watson from London and Europe to the U.S. would certainly be a departure for Doyle's character, but would arguably provide a little more scope for diversity within the trilogy, and offer a new angle on a franchise that has been interpreted over and over again onscreen.

As the report also points out, Doyle had several connections to the U.S. in his day, and even named William J. Burns the "American Sherlock." As such, there would still be plenty of scope for Sherlock Holmes 3 to bear the influence of its creator, even within a Californian setting. Having said that, the move across the Atlantic may come with a risk of the film drifting too far into Western territory, which might not play well with Sherlock's usual tone.

SHERLOCK HOLMES 3 Eyeing ROCKETMAN Director Dexter Fletcher To Take The Helm

It appears that Warner Bros. may have found a director for their long-awaited Sherlock Holmes threequel as it's now being reported that the studio is zeroing in on Rocketman helmer Dexter Fletcher.

Variety is reporting that Dexter Fletcher has signed on to direct the long-awaited third installment in Warner Bros' Sherlock Holmes trilogy, which will see Robert Downey Jr. (Avengers: Endgame) and Jude Law (Captain Marvel) reprise their roles as Dr. Holmes and Dr. Watson, respectively.

The prior two films, which were directed by Guy Ritchie (Aladdin), were major box office blockbusters and combined to gross over $1 billion worldwide.

According to the report, Warner Bros. always intended to make a third film, but due to RDJ's busy Marvel schedule, moving forward with production on the third chapter proved to be easier said than done. However, with Downey Jr.'s Iron Man commitments now complete, WB was quick to set a release date and begin their director search.

Fletcher was recently at the helm of Paramount Pictures' critically-acclaimed Elton John biopic, Rocketman, which, to date, has grossed over $175.2 million worldwide ($89.6M domestic; $85.5M foreign) on an estimated $40 million production budget. His past directing credits also include Eddie the Eagle, Sunshine on Leith, and Wild Bill.
