Default Installing a Ceiling Access Door

I am trying to install an access door in our garage ceiling, but I'm not having much luck finding help on the internet for the style of panel that I bought.

I bought an Elmdor DW series door from Home Depot, but the drywall is only 5/8" thick, and the mounting holes are recessed deeper than 5/8" (see Note 5 in the following pdf), so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to mount this thing. It seems like I need some sort of frame behind the drywall to make this one work, and I'd prefer not to do that. https://www.elmdorstoneman.com/uploa...Library/dw.pdf

I'm wondering if I should return the Elmdor and buy one of these plastic ones that only requires an adhesive: http://www.bestaccessdoors.com/18-x-...c-access-door/

All the access holes I see have some sort of frame around them on the inside.

Same here.

You also seem to have a large joist in the location you have cut out.

I was beginning to wonder if someone was going to mention this.

Yep, probably just going to buy the plastic one. Hoping it won't require any modification to accomodate the joist.

You need clear space to install that one - it's wanting "furred spaces allowing faster installation and fixing maximum clearance" - I read that as they at least want furring strips on the back side of the drywall. Really I'd move the hole over between the ceiling joists and then patch the portion that directly under the joists (and it's easy since you'll have something nice and strong to screw the patch to!)
