Default New Day, New Trump Admin Scandal; Intelligence Whistleblower edition

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/...igence-1496135
Quote:
Schiff accuses top intel official of illegally withholding 'urgent' whistleblower complaint

The nation's top intelligence official is illegally withholding a whistleblower complaint, possibly to protect President Donald Trump or senior White House officials, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff alleged Friday.

Schiff issued a subpoena for the complaint, accusing acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire of taking extraordinary steps to withhold the complaint from Congress, even after the intel community's inspector general characterized the complaint as credible and of "urgent concern."

“A Director of National Intelligence has never prevented a properly submitted whistleblower complaint that the [inspector general] determined to be credible and urgent from being provided to the congressional intelligence committees. Never," Schiff said in a statement. "This raises serious concerns about whether White House, Department of Justice or other executive branch officials are trying to prevent a legitimate whistleblower complaint from reaching its intended recipient, the Congress, in order to cover up serious misconduct."

Schiff indicated that he learned the matter involved "potentially privileged communications by persons outside the Intelligence Community," raising the specter that it is "being withheld to protect the President or other Administration officials." In addition, Schiff slammed Maguire for consulting the Justice Department about the whistleblower complaint "even though the statute does not provide you discretion to review, appeal, reverse, or countermand in any way the [inspector general's] independent determination, let alone to involve another entity within the Executive Branch."

"The Committee can only conclude, based on this remarkable confluence of factors, that the serious misconduct at issue involves the President of the United States and/or other senior White House or Administration officials," Schiff wrote in a letter to Maguire on Friday.

The initial whistleblower complaint was filed last month, and Schiff indicated that it was required by law to be shared with Congress nearly two weeks ago. His subpoena requires the information to be turned over by Sept. 17 or else he intends to compel Maguire to appear before Congress in a public hearing on Sept. 19.

Schiff said Maguire declined to confirm or deny whether the whistleblower's complaint relates to anything the Intelligence Committee is currently investigating or whether White House lawyers were involved in the decision-making about the complaint.

Officials in Maguire’s office acknowledged Schiff’s subpoena late Friday.

“We received the HPSCI's subpoena this evening. We are reviewing the request and will respond appropriately,” said a senior intelligence official. “The ODNI and Acting DNI Maguire are committed to fully complying with the law and upholding whistleblower protections and have done so here.”
the story has since been updated by Schiff telling reporters that the acting DNI has confirmed to him that he's not sharing the whistleblower information with the House Intel Committee as required by law because of instructions from "higher up". the acting DNI only reports to one person.... the President. so either Schiff is lying about what he was told, the acting DNI is lying about why he isn't following the law, the acting DNI doesn't know who he reports to, or President Trump is illegally instructing his acting DNI to not follow the law.

one of those things must be true as far as I can tell... another day, another Trump administration scandal that would've been damn near impeachable to the GOP if it were Clinton or Obama...

hey look now we have the President openly asking a foreign gov't to interfere in our elections... and clearly conservatives are going nuts over this...

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/...leader-1506471
Quote:
Trump doesn't deny asking world leader about Biden, says conversations are 'always appropriate'

President Donald Trump on Friday did not deny that he discussed former Vice President Joe Biden with a foreign leader during a conversation that is reportedly the subject of a whistleblower complaint.

Instead, Trump claimed the allegations against him were lodged by a "partisan" intelligence official — despite acknowledging that he did not know the official's identity — and asserted that his exchanges with world leaders are "always appropriate."

He told reporters in the Oval Office that "it doesn't matter what I discussed" with the foreign leader but went on to say that "someone ought to look into Joe Biden."

The remarks from the president are sure to escalate tensions between the White House and Democratic members of Congress seeking access to the complaint, which acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire has refused to turn over to lawmakers.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) threatened Thursday to pursue legal action against the administration to acquire the complaint following a classified briefing Thursday with the intelligence community’s inspector general.

Trump's latest comments are also likely to heighten speculation that the conversation reportedly detailed in the complaint referred to his July 25 phone call with recently elected Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump told reporters he did not know whether that call was the subject of the whistleblower complaint.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the complaint involves a “promise” Trump made to a foreign leader, and the Post and The New York Times reported Thursday that it also has to do with Ukraine. POLITICO has not independently verified the Post's reporting.
ADVERTISING

Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani revealed Thursday evening that he had asked Ukrainian officials to investigate Biden, the front-runner in the Democratic presidential primary, telling CNN: “Of course I did.”

Trump earlier Friday morning denied making inappropriate comments to a foreign leader in a pair of tweets. “The Radical Left Democrats and their Fake News Media partners, headed up again by Little Adam Schiff, and batting Zero for 21 against me, are at it again!” he wrote online.

“They think I may have had a ‘dicey’ conversation with a certain foreign leader based on a ‘highly partisan’ whistleblowers statement,” Trump continued. “Strange that with so many other people hearing or knowing of the perfectly fine and respectful conversation, that they would not have also come forward.”

The president concluded: “Do you know the reason why they did not? Because there was nothing said wrong, it was pitch perfect!”

Of course they aren't. I mean, what's more patriotic and old-fashioned red blooded Americanism than asking a foreign government to interfere in our democratic processes?

You guys are such hypocrites. The 2016 DNC hired former foreign intelligence officials to create a fucking dossier on trump. That didn’t even create a situation where any of you batted your eyes. Laughable.

Please tell me how that's equivalent to the quid pro quo of a sitting U.S. President dangling the threat of cutting foreign aid in order to gain politically.

The DNC hiring a foreign company for opposition research is not even in the same hemisphere as far as equivalency.

Thank you. I realize two wrongs don’t make a right, but you can’t be up in arms about this Trump situation and give the DNC a pass. Conspiring with a foreign entity to influence an election is ridiculous, regardless of which side you are on.

yes you can easily be up in arms about the President of the US blackmailing/setting up a quid pro quo with a foreign gov't with authorized US aid unless they investigate your rivals, and not particularly care about a private organization hiring foreign researchers to investigate claims of foreign misdeeds.

that's not remotely the same thing. also, before you completely skip over it, that same firm was hired by his GOP rivals to start that research and the Hillary campaign simply started picking up the tab for the continued research.

one of these things is using the power of the Office of President and taxpayer dollars to blackmail a foreign gov't. the other is a private citizen paying other individuals to do research.

Ukraine already investigated this and said they found nothing. now the PotUS is withholding millions of US taxpayer dollars in aid that country needs to defend itself against his 2016 co-conspirators' gov't.

in an effort to swat away the stupid when I see it... this Kavanaugh thing isn't BS. her lawyers provided 25 people with information to the FBI last year including witnesses. none of it was investigated. there's a guy that apparently thought it was okay to put his dick on things and people for the better part of at least 10 years on the Supreme Court.

at least have the decency to own it and say it doesn't matter. pretending like it didn't happen just shows how sad the argument for his nomination was... if it really didn't happen, why didn't Kavanaugh want to clear his name by having a real investigation instead of the Keystone Kops routine required by the GOP Senate and the President? Occam's Razor points to something problematic being there that he didn't want unearthed by a real investigation.

edit* forgot to mention, somehow, that anyone okay with Kavanaugh on the bench means you're okay with someone that lies under oath on the bench as well as the very real possibility of the sexual stuff. just need to quietly acknowledge/own it like liberals had to ignore Ted Kennedy's drunken escapades and the very real possibility he let a girl die in his car from before his time in public service.

Really, you still believe in the Kav BS.

He went through 7 FBI background checks for his previous positions and nothing was found, not even a hint at anything like this.

Once he is appointed by Trump, he becomes a drunken rapist.

I'm not buying the BS, I know you do though.

Trump says 'it doesn't matter' if he asked Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden

In case you need a translation of Trump speak, this is him saying "Yea I did it, so what?" He doesn't even deny it.

"The conversation I had was*largely congratulatory, with largely corruption*— all*of the corruption taking place*— largely the fact that we*don't want our people like Vice President Biden and his son*creating to the corruption*already in the Ukraine and Ukraine has got a lot of*problems. The new president is saying that*he's going to be able to rid the*country of corruption, and I*said that would be a great thing,*we had a great conversation."

Less than 14 months away from election day, and Trump is the odds on favorite.

even Russian influence will struggle to help Trump even get close to anyone other than Harris from the majority of the polls. the electoral college will only be able to boost the power of the rural white vote so much...

Which means if there was dirt on Kav, they would have found it since they hate Trump so much. The FBI not finding anything is proof hes innocent and them investigating Hilary and not charging her is proof that its corrupt.. /Trump supporter logic.

I love this sort of defense. That if one is against Trump they MUST see the other side as fucking amazballs. Let me share with you my view and the view of many others out there. A view that's very similar to Trump v Clinton in 2016. We're ready to take the lessor of the two evils. We know that Biden/Warren probably aren't the answer, but we feel we can deal with their problems a lot better than we can deal with the problems Trump brings to the office. Biden/Warren/Insert Dem candidate here is more of a stepping stone out of this shit storm and then we'll re-evaluate and figure it out from there.

It’s not an argument. It’s a white flag. Trump is the most vile person on this earth. He is responsible for more atrocities than Hitler, Stalin, and Pot, combined. He has done more against minorities than any president since Abraham Lincoln.

And mark my words, the country will be a much safer place where a woman can walk right in and have a 39 week inconvenience’s skull crushed and sucked out, and my fellow citizens won’t be able to purchase firearms with 11+ round capacities. People will not have to pay back their student loans, and then we can afford to pay appropriate reparations. On top of that, without all of that student debt, we’ll also be able to finally pay for everyone to have first rate health insurance.

I’m exhausted. 2021 I’ll quit my job, get on the tit, and leave my doors unlocked at my house.

It will be fantastic.

My 10 yr old son reacts about as dramatically. You two have a lot in common.

Im betting your 10 year old son is more intelligent and has a better grasp on logic. At least he probably can understand there is something in there between the extremes.
