2020 Supra And Z4 Want To Show The Mustang There Is A Replacement For Displacement

The 2020 Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 have arrived, and they want to demonstrate that downsizing doesn’t mean you have to deal with compromises when it comes to performance.

A multitude of drag races involving the new Supra and range-topping Z4 M40i have been held since members of the press, and the public, started getting their hands on the (closely related – by how much, it depends on who you’re asking…) sports cars. This one is a little different, though, as it pits the two against a Ford Mustang GT.

It’s worth pointing out that the Mustang GT is considerably cheaper than both the Supra and the Z4 M40i and, thus, doesn’t really belong in the same niche. However, it is front-engined, rear-wheel drive and enthusiast-oriented, and a popular option for those looking for a car that’s fast and fun to drive but won’t break the bank. Little wonder it is the world’s best-selling sports car, then.

This drag race was held in South Africa, where the Mustang GT’s naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 delivers 444 HP. That is down on the 460 hp of U.S.-spec cars, but still well up on the 335 HP delivered by both the Supra and Z4 M40i (in non-U.S. form).

Car Magazine’s test saw the trio go head-to-head down a half-mil) runway and segments the race down into a 0-100 km/h comparison, a quarter-mile sprint, and the full half-mile run. Both the Supra and Z4 M40i establish significant leads as they set off, but with its extra power, can the Mustang make up for lost ground?

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.
