If you let it leak down to 50 the flow slows (less pressure from the weight of the water on top) and eventually stops. Then, eventually you fill it up to 100. But if you try to keep it at 100 you are spending the whole day replacing the water lost through the hole.

Its been proven time and time again that its more efficient to let it get closer to equilibrium when not needed and reheat.
