RyanL - Vette - KCSR

RyanL brought us his vette today. Looks like its a little dirty from the trip over here. But we thought it would be a good example of how even a person who takes great care of their vehicle sometimes needs a little help.

Few more pics after being hand washed.

Before we washed the car the hardwater spots stood out and even held dirt.

This is the same area on the vehicle after wash and claybar.

Same spot after 3rd step of polish. We can go all the way to 9 steps of polishing but RyanL's vette didnt need that. It just needed a little help as RyanL takes pretty good care of it.

Just a few more shots after completion of work just to show the mirror like properties that can be brought to the paint. I apoligize for not being a photographer.

Looks good, what kind of product are you using for your tire dressing and what is your LSP of choice after correction?

I have a 99 Corvette very similar to his. Black with similar problems. Would you mind pm'ing me cost on a similar process? Would you need to look at the car first? Just trying to get a ballpark. Considering buying the equipment and learning on another vehicle first. I imagine your cost/expertise would be more beneficial at this stage though. Thanks.

I use mostly AutoMagic Products as I find they are top notch in their chemistry and finish on the vehicle. For tire dressing I use a waterbased shine so that it is easily spread, wont hurt the rubber, and wont smear on the paint.

As far as my LSP of choice I use an automagic product that I have been applying for years. Its a high-tech polymer sealent much like the one that is applied to Mercedes and BMW before purchase. The same thing that dealerships try to sell you for $500+. It says on the bottle it will adhere for 5 years, but if you pay the additional $100 to have it applied once here, I reapply it everytime I wax your car. RyanL's vette got this treatment so it will keep this shine for a while.

Those 5 year claims you hear are ridiculous. No polymer sealant will last that long. The only sealant I've seen truly lasts for years are the resin coatings like opti-coat, but are a bitch to apply and really expensive, so the 500 dollar charge for application is truly worthwhile. Glad to hear you aren't pushing for customers to go that long without reapplication.

Big fan of the water based dressings. Will never go back. I generally prefer a more semi-gloss look using the water based so after an applications and spreading, I go over it with a dry sponge. Some tires really like to hold onto the dressing too and even water based can fling if too heavy.

Do you use the water based for engine dressing too?

Absolutely. Water based although a little more expensive and requires a little know how to apply correctly will keep the engine looking more OEM clean rather than the greasy look that a lot of other detail shops end up with.

Exactly. I can't stand it when I see "professional" shops using armor all, silicone tire dressing or WD40 to dress an engine.

My own results using water based. There is no substitute. It just looks clean and fresh. Not oily or greasy...and heaven forbid moisture robbing like WD40 on all your rubber/plastic parts.

FYI - That engine bay was destroyed. I got a little rambunctious after a 1,000mi road trip to Michigan's Upper Penninsula. Hit the dirt roads after it had rained, cracked a beer and cranked the music for some midnight powersliding.
