![]() See that. What I did with that headline? I used a racing pun to illustrate that Electronic Arts (EA) is looking to make a movie based on their popular Need For Speed video game franchise. That’s called “gold”, people. Recognize! The Fast and the Furious franchise has mad a lot of money for Universal and the other studios want to capitalize on that. So, instead of just creating something original, Warner Brothers, Sony and Paramount are fighting over who will get to make Need for Speed. Right now it looks like Paramount is going to win the day with a low seven figure deal. EA has tapped George and John Gatins (Real Steel) to write the script, with John producing alongside EA. |

‘Need For Speed’ to Hit Screens Thanks to ‘Act of Valor’ Co-Director
![]() Briefly: We don’t have a lot of info on this one yet, but DreamWorks is ready to compete with Universal’s mega-earning Fast and Furious franchise. The studio is moving forward with an adaptation of the EA game series Need For Speed, and has Scott Waugh in talks to direct. Waugh’s most recent work on screens was the Navy SEAL movie Act of Valor. The interesting thing here is that Waugh has also been reported as set to direct another racing movie called High Speed. That was going to be through his own production company, with a story about “the best high-speed police pursuit drivers in the country, assembled as a unit to stop and elusive, high-end underground racing circuit hellbent on running deadly point-to-point races through major American Cities.” So has Dreamworks bought into that film and combined it with the studio’s own effort to make a Need for Speed movie? A valid question, given the potential similarity between the properties, but Variety says Waugh will work with the script by George Gatins that DreamWorks bought a month ago. The screenwriter’s brother John Gatins (Real Steel and Flight screenwriter) will produce. Waugh and his Act of Valor co-director Mike McCoy are also set to make Unknown Soldier (formerly Black Sands), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. |

Dreamworks will make Need for Speed film
![]() It's official: Need for Speed is going to be a movie, and it's been "fast-tracked" to arrive in theaters in 2014. Paramount-owned Dreamworks had been talking to Electronic Arts about a cinematic treatment of the video game franchise, and the two were able to close a deal. The script is ready, penned by George Gatin, the brother of Real Steel screenwriter John Gatin. The movie is based on the entire NFS franchise, not one particular series. So what can you expect? According to the love-fest press release, you'll get "a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise," which makes it sound like there'll be Lamborghinis, Nobles and Shelbys driven by middle-aged dudes with mustaches and huge sunglasses, and at least one afro. A more accurate synopsis might be from a commenter at Joystiq, who wrote, "It's going to have the live-action sex doll disguised as a female cop, the snarky white guy who is the fashionabl[e] anti-hero, the token black sidekick and the bad guy who has no idea he's going to become a good guy. Oh, and hip-hop music, hip-hop music everywhere." A potential saving grace is that it's being directed by Scott Waugh, who is just off doing the restrained and very dramatic Special Ops flick Act of Valor. A definite saving grace is that EA is letting fans suggest cars for the film cars on EA's Facebook page. Scroll down for a press release on the big-screen NFS coming your way. |

‘Breaking Bad’ Star Aaron Paul To Star In ‘Need For Speed’
![]() One of the great legacy’s of Breaking Bad will eventually be that it helped supercharge the careers of its two lead actors. Bryan Cranston has become a mainstay of Hollywood blockbusters, appearing in films like Total Recall, Argo, John Carter, and Rock of Ages. His partner, Aaron Paul, has yet to go that route, instead focusing on smaller films like Smashed. But with the series nearing its end, Paul is about to kick things into high gear. Literally. He’s just been cast as the lead in Need for Speed, director Scott Waugh‘s adaptation of the EA Sports video game series. Read more after the jump. Entertainment Weekly first broke the news of Paul’s casting. According to a DreamWorks executive, filming will begin early next year aimed at a February 7, 2014 release date. The film was conceived by George and John Gatins is be is being penned by the former with a story said to be “inspired by the game series but [not] based on any one title.” Obviously, Need for Speed seems like a reaction to the success of the Fast and Furious films but – no offense to Paul Walker, Vin Diesel or Dwayne Johnson – Aaron Paul is a much better actor. He’s got multiple Emmy’s for his portrayal of Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad and if this is the film he’s chosen to do to kick off his post TV career, there is likely something more there than just car chases and explosions. Or maybe he’s tired of sitting in the back seat and just wants behind the wheel. Are you excited to see Paul getting a starring role? |

Dominic Cooper Joins ‘Need For Speed;’ First Plot Details Revealed
Need for Speed, the adaptation of the popular EA gaming franchise, is already racings toward its 2014 release date. Directed by Scott Waugh and written by George Gatins, the film recently grabbed itself a lead in Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul. Next up, Imogen Poots (Fright Night) was cast and now Dominic Cooper, best known for his role in Captain America: The First Avenger, has joined the team. Along with Cooper’s casting comes details of how all those pieces fit together. Read about it after the jump. Variety broke the news of Cooper’s casting and gave us these brand new plot details: Story follows an underground racecar driver (Paul) who owns a garage that modifies expensive cars to make them faster for racing. Framed and sent to prison when his best friend is murdered during a race, he seeks revenge upon his release. Cooper will play the other male lead of Dino, an ex-NASCAR driver who uses his connections to the wealthy to create a business rebuilding and modifying supercars. Imogen Poots… is making a deal to play an exotic car dealer who does business with Paul and Cooper. Granted, that idea seems pretty straightforward and obvious, but it’s still ripe for action. Not to mention, any movie that features modifying cars and racing is already a huge win in my book. I may drive a piece of crap in real life, but that doesn’t stop me from getting excited anytime the boys in the Fast and Furious movies go shopping for super expensive parts to put in their cars. Need for Speed is scheduled for release on February 7, 2014 and will likely go into production next year. How do you think the pieces are coming together? |

Michael Keaton Has a ‘Need for Speed’
![]() As Dom Toretto and Brian O’Conner rev their engines for Universal’s Fast & Furious 6, DreamWorks is preparing a high-speed franchise of its own. Last spring, the studio nabbed the rights to the EA Sports racing video game Need for Speed and set Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) to direct. Casting got off to a strong start last fall as Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper joined the cast, picking up Imogen Poots and Kid Cudi along the way. Now it’s bringing on some more grown-up talent, in the form of Michael Keaton. More details after the jump. The script by John Gatins (Flight) centers around an local street racer (Paul) who runs a business modifying vehicles for racing. He’s sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit, and emerges determined to take revenge on the former colleague (Cooper) who framed him. For some reason, that involves joining a cross-country race. But his enemy gets wind of the plan and puts a massive bounty on his head, sending all manner of illegal supercharged vehicles after him. Keaton will play the mysterious host of the race, which features “the best drivers from around the world.” As previously reported, Poots will portray an exotic car dealer and Cudi a member of Paul’s crew. Ramon Rodriguez (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), Rami Malek (The Master), and Harrison Gilbertson round out the rest of the cast. While Keaton has worked steadily for decades, he hasn’t appeared in a live-action feature since 2010′s The Other Guys. Happily, that’s about to change. Keaton will be seen later this year (probably) in the thriller Penthouse North, and he recently wrapped a role as the villain of Jose Padilha’s Robocop. In addition, he has a role in Greg Mottola’s HBO movie Clear History, opposite Larry David and Jon Hamm. Need for Speed is scheduled for release on February 7, 2014. |
