Default Internal HDD Opinion

http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0385098 OR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148725
Same drive, two different websites.

This is the Hard Drive in question. Just wanting to know what the professionals of KCSR think about it. Seems to be the cheapest over 1.5 TB I can get my hands on.

Use : Backup Drive for (Mostly) 1,374 "Files". Looking to transfer all of my "Files" onto another drive to clear up space on my current drive.

If not this one, make a suggestion. Doesn't need to be the best around, but I don't want a piece of shit in my tower either.

Thanks,
-Jared

I *never* buy Seagates. Horrible reliability, lame customer service. I've owned a few of them over the years, and 80% have died or never worked right.

My preferred brand is Western Digital. I've got about 30 or so of them at home right now, and none have failed.

Hitachi is also good, and is the only other HDD brand I'll buy.

fwiw, if necessary, check prices at other local stores and get a price match on a Western Digital. You can frequently find Western Digital external drives for sale cheaper than internal drives. With most of them, you can pry the case open, remove the HDD, and install it in your pc if you prefer.

Don't go with the WD Caviar Green drives, they're a bitch to get working properly in the first place.

Otherwise, I've never had an issue with WD, but Seagate drives like to fail on me.

i've never had problems with the Caviar Green drives. only drawback is that they're slower than many drives. they're still fast enough for most storage purposes.

Edit : Fuck that. I'll wait. I'm not that hard strapped for space just yet. Barely wanted to spend $99.99 on one. Let alone twice that.

Thanks for the input guys, feel free to continue your discussions as it will only help this thread more.

fwiw, you may have to wait until 2014 for HDD prices to return to pre-flood levels.

I've got a 1.5 tb external. Only issue is that it's very tricky to host to my Xbox from an external.

Green drives are a joke. Also x2 on Seagate HORRIBLE drives. Stick with Western Digital. My 1TB MyBook has been kicking ass for three years now. It's pretty beat to fuck too from when I had a laptop.

Also the drive I use for gaming is a WD 160gb manufactured from like mid 2000's. Still hauls balls even though I'm sure it's only sata 3.0gbps.

+1 to staying away from Seagate. I used to think the world of them....put them in a lot of peoples' computers...then I started replacing one after another after another. Most failed catastrophically, no data recovery possible.

This.

Yeah, the Caviar Green is acceptable for general storage, but only if you plan to use it as a back up.

Opinions, I have strong ones against these drives! lol

I have had 1 Hitachi and 1 WD fail on me of the last 16 HD's I have had. I have 1 Seagate internal that is still kickin strong, the rest are WD's. I have two 3TB WD externals coupled to a Seagate 3TB home NAS Drive that works far better than the WD home, and its accessible outside the network via ftp or html, and it has a video streaming server and iOS apps to stream to my idevices. If you are looking for networked storage, I gotta go with Seagate, but internal or standard external I would stick with WD.

My media server is full of Green drives. They all work fine for me and installed like any other drive.

You don't have to buy a shitty Seagate drive to get all of that functionality.

I have 2 spinpoints in raid 0, still running strong, 2 hitachi drives in raid 0 running great, couple WD drives, still running strong, I have to agree with Segate, they use to make great drives now I have a 750gb, and 3 500gb drives that are paper weights.

Oh probably not, and at today's prices it would be better to do some more research on the matter. I got the Seagate pre-flood ($139 for 3TB), and had read up on it after returning the WD home networked storage because it sucked (I have my computer/laptop/ipad/atv/xbox/iphone all on the network and wanted something that could store and host video to all devices, most importantly the pc not dropping the mapping every transfer). Also, the Seagate has full USB multiple device support, so I just attached a usb bus to one of the ports in the back and currently have its storage holding at 9TB (only 6 filled atm, but growing daily). For the attached drives, I still use the WD's.
