Chiefs elevate QB Kyle Shurmur to roster, release De’Anthony Thomas and Terrell McClain

Status of Patrick Mahomes’ knee remains questionable

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

While Kansas City holds its breath to see how long it will take for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to recover, the team elevated quarterback Kyle Shurmur to its roster Tuesday.

At the same time the team announced it has released De’Anthony Thomas and Terrell McClain. The team also signed defensive tackle Mike Pennel.

Shurmur played college ball at Vanderbilt before being signed to the Kansas City Chiefs practice quad as an undrafted free agent this summer.

This move comes as questions remain regarding the knee (and ankle) injury to Mahomes.

Earlier this week, coach Andy Reid said there wasn’t a set timeline for Mahomes’ return.

"I think you just go and take it as how he feels and what the doctor says," Reid said. "There isn't a set time. I don't think you can go with a set timeline with this injury. We're going to just see."

Reid said at this point he couldn't even rule Mahomes officially out for this weekend's game against the Green Bay Packers.

Matt Moore served as quarterback after Mahomes was injured in the game against Denver.

Mahomes went down while sneaking for a first down on fourth-and-short deep in Broncos' territory. Everyone jumped up from the pile but Mahomes, who immediately grabbed for his right knee as trainers rushed onto the field.
Sources close to the team said Mahomes escaped significant ligament damage when he dislocated that kneecap, and team physicians were able to get his patella back into place on the field.
