i have a 1x30 sander and while it is "easier" I can file them down in my homemade jig just as quick.
I find the 1x30 sander is more useful for bridging the gap between finish filing and hand handing at higher grits. Im thinking about trying to fab a solid 2" setup to help hog off metal in the early stages. (using actual knife stock would help in this too…)
I do anneal and reheat treat them. But its just by my eyeball, so nothing super technical, but they seems to be working out –*you can see a slight hamon line on the above blade.
